Welcome to Mixmag

When it launched in 1982, Mixmag created the dance music magazine market. It is the market leader and has maintained its reputation as the most influential title in the dance sector. It created the words "superclub" and "trip hop", released the first legal DJ mix tapes and CDs and is the most trusted voice in dance music.

Mixmag was acquired by independent publishers Development Hell Ltd in December 2005 and re-launched in April 2006.

Over the past six years the UK dance scene has grown up and become more aspirational, reconnecting with its roots in glamour and the underground. The relaunch of Mixmag reflects this with better production values, glossier paper and the return of a perfect bound spine.

The Burberry caps, downmarket "mates in a state" pictures and wall-to-wall drugs features are gone. In comes stylish, grown-up writing from some of Britain's best music writers, a commitment to exciting new music - from electronica to house to urban and beyond - visually stunning directional fashion and the world's greatest guide to planning your best nights out in the UK and elsewhere.

Today's clubbers are more sophisticated, more broadminded and - let's face it -sexier than the days of the mega clubs and mass marketing. Mixmag is their magazine, reflecting their more cultured, more elitist but no less hedonistic approach to a good night out.

Mixmag will continue to come with its world-famous series of free cover CD's mixed by the best DJ's in the world.

Mixmag has a certified circulation of 42,235 (ABC)
Mixmag has a readership of 304,000

*more* aspirational than MOS-era clubland?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping this would be a DJ Martian thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

But then again, I hope that most threads are started by him.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing screams "glamour" like seven malnourished white guys in shit trainers searching through crates in a basement record store in Hounslow!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Q: Why put a CD compiled by Hard-Fi on the front cover. It's a joke, Hard-Fi are a naff NME trad band.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

does MARK ELLEN have the requisite SYSTEMS?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know about this but I was thinking of buying it again for the first time in years just out of curiosity.

Was really put off it in the 90s because of the drugs/lifestyle empthasis. If it's anything like Muzik used to be that'd be great.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha, Martian kills any interest i had it in with one swift flick of the wrist.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't bought Mixmag in about 5 years. Is it worth buying now?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

not this issue ! Hard-Fi FFS

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

hard fi were the cover stars 3 months ago! But that was Old Mixmag.

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

incorporate retro rock band as part of HOLISTIC APPROACH

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hard-Fi front cover was "Development Hell" run Mixmag [Not EMAP]

Last month was the "design makeover / relaunch": Goldfrapp front cover and Hawtin Mix CD

This month Orange front cover with a sunset and a Hard-Fi branded mix CD

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

New Mixmag website:
http://www.mixmag.net

crap inappropriate use of flash
useless loading speed
hardly any content
some sort of pseudo music blog in the middle

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't notice much different to normal in the Goldfrapp issue to be honest.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

hard-fi aren't reto they're just terrible.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Have they covered the new Cosmic House/Balearic thing yet? I've only been reading the covers from a distance.

Makrugaik (makrugaik), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Correct, notice my emphasis DESIGN: "design makeover / relaunch"

not a Content Strategy relaunch.

by the way The Wire has had a [slight] design makeover this month.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Is the new Wire with Sonic Youth on the cover out in the shops yet? I thought it would be a bit early for that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know why i bothered trying to zing dj martian when he's so capable of delivering the lolz himself.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

ah right right i getcha. so do u work in the music mag game martian?

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Blurb

Today's clubbers are more sophisticated, more broadminded and - let's face it -sexier than the days of the mega clubs and mass marketing

How they heck do Hard-Fi fit in with this ?

by the way "Andrew Harrison" edits Mixmag these days, he's hardly a 20 something serious style clubber, he must be late 30s.

He is a previous Editorial Director of Q, and turns up on 5live in the 10pm - 1am as a guest news / current affairs pundit.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

New wire issue in the shops as of yesterday.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

it wasn't in glasgow. maybe today tough.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Have they covered the new Cosmic House/Balearic thing yet? I've only been reading the covers from a distance. "

Was it Mixmag who ran the X-Press 2 cover recently with a big song and dance about the return of balearic? But then that wasn't about cosmic house.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

It created the words "superclub" and "trip hop"

yeah right.. and why would you want to boast about that?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

ooh i see they are selling wavs onsite! v cool.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

by the way "Andrew Harrison" edits Mixmag these days

what's his real name?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to know how they reason that today's clubbers are 'let's face it - sexier' - PBS genepool progression systems theory?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

what's his real name?

Nicholas McConnor

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

I will try get the wire tomorrow but no doubt Hamilton will be late in getting it as usual.
I wish someone would bring back Muzik (As in open minded Muzik of when it 1st started) That was a great mag in its 1st few years. Way better than Mixmag(then again i've never been a clubber and I suppose mixmag is very much for that)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Another magazine i don't understand "Notion" - strange mixture of high profile dance music and NME/Xfm type guitar bands and glossy photos.

Target audience mainstream early 20s - radio 1 listeners?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Never seen this mag. Is it new?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to know how they reason that today's clubbers are 'let's face it - sexier' - PBS genepool progression systems theory?

cos we are today's clubbers innit

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

"I'd like to know how they reason that today's clubbers are 'let's face it - sexier' - PBS genepool progression systems theory?"

I think this just means more clubby and less superclubby/ravey.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

-- DJ Martian (altmartinu...), May 19th, 2006.

very strange -- i mean people who like dance never like guitar bands, EVER, and they certainly want to read ONLY about their fave bands, because they're all 14 years old at heart and can't accept other people's tastes, apparently.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

notion has been going over 18 months ?, it can be found in WHsmith

Notion
http://www.ukclubbing.com/

I saw a new issue in the newsagents this week that had a crap NME type band on the front "The Kooks"

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

their real name.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I think this just means more clubby and less superclubby/ravey.

i suppose if by that they mean things seem not so bloated now then yes.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Bought it last month for the Hawtin cd, which has it moments (tracks 5 - 8). Absolutely pales in significance when compared to the one he did for them 10 years ago though, which kinda sums the whole thing up really.

smn (smn), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

sums up? you mean in that hawtin today pales in comparison to hawtin of 92-93?

i bought the issue w/ the SWITCH mix (so much better than the hawtin mix) and i might type up some nuggets from it ... they had a big article on "minimal" and one on holden and also one on luciano too ... the "minimal" article was terrible but the holden/luciano ones were pretty good!!

FLOWING STRAIGHT FROM THE SURVIVAL SCROLL (vahid), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't there a big Luciano feature in the Hawtin CD issue as well?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

that switch mix was awesome. i barely read the mag, though.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Sums up?

I'm just using Hawtin's cover cds as indicators really. The cd from 10 years ago (or whenever it was) is far superior in terms of content and creativity than todays. Just like the magazine...

And yeah Hawtin's live DJ sets today aren't a patch on the ones he was doing back then either. I just wish he'd relax a bit more these days... He always seems in such a rush now, you know? Too much time hanging around with that gurning fuckwit Sven Vaeth I think. But that's another story...

smn (smn), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

the soulwax-mixed coverdisc from a few months back was another really good one.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

I still have both the CDs in their wrapping.
