I think, if I am to base this off of the re-release of If You're Feeling Sinister live, classic, because this is a pretty cool version of it. Not definitive, but good.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 22 May 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry. Which White Stripes thing?

They did a release of Denial Twist for their tour,

1) They sold a blank CDr with their piccie on the label, along with "Denial Twist, live xx/xx/xx from xxxxxx" title, on the merch stall.

2) On the website, a couple days later, the mp3 becomes available

3) Repeat for each date of their tour.

Complete set worth a fortune on ebay now.

That Pretty Things one of SF Sorrow was sort of fun, but unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

Would that be one of the first ones? in the current scheme of things?

I saw Brian Wilson perform Smile live a few months ago? Total classic.

The Melvins "houdini live" is great!

dunno if this counts, but the who re-created Tommy several times on their 1989 tour (aka, "The Who On Ice") which was later released on the execrable boxed set Join Together.

they did the same thing with Quadrophenia in 1996-97, with much greater artistic success. didn't get released until last year on dvd. against all odds, the Quadrophenia shows worked surprisingly well.

What about when the album's not by the band performing it? My friend was telling me about a festival/show where the Flaming Lips apparently covered Dark Side of the Moon? Obviously there's a sort of gross insider fratty ethos that could undermine that, but I admit it sounded like a great fit and I would love to see/hear that show. (Better, though: The Flaming Lips covering Piper at the Gates of Dawn.)

There's also a boot of Phish doing Remain in Light (that's surprisingly not nearly as horrible as you'd expect it to be)

Arthur Lee's live Forever Changes concert is surprisingly good.
