pub rock - definitely. the music was always the worst thing about his stuff. but I still love the occassional track for the cheeky voice and the rhyming slang - all the time worn favourites, I suppose.

his son Baxter Dury's recent record is complete rubbidge

He was better than your average pub grandpa type; there was something unhinged and sexy and Tom Waits-ish about him. Nina Hagen does a goofy cover of "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick". Not nearly as good as her "Ziggy Stardust" cover, though.

He swore quite well

it's all in the lyrics & delivery
maybe not all stellar but can't knock Dury's peaks

geeza's from my hometown - Upminster - bless ya Ian!

Anyone who could come up with a line like "You call me a ninny/You're a stupid twat"* and would call another song "Fucking Ada" is CLASSIC in my book.

* = the Great American/British Cultural Divide making the word "twat" more vulgar on this side notwithstanding.

Dr Feelgood = Pub Rock. Blockheads = not. More to follow.

Jeff W, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

blockheads = pub jazzrock!!

mark s, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Precisely. Or even pub jazzreggae!! All the difference in the world.

Something interesting? Er, Dury released more good tracks in 6/8 time than the Cocteau Twins.

Reasons to be Cheerful pt 3 is GRATE.

the sleeves of the 'Do It Yourself' LP were made out of random pieces of wallpaper, so there's loads of different designs

I saw him live a couple of times, and he was a tremendous entertainer, in a rather vaudevillean way.
