"Ian Curtis dying was the best thing that happened in my life"

Hmm.

This being the famous quote attributed to Ant Wilson, by Nick Kent during an article way back in the day.

Famously, Wilson blew up furiously, and demanded to know where and how. The magazine (the face?) said they had the tape, and it wasn't until the statute of limitations had expired that they admitted that they hadn't.

So, what's it doing in this months Q as a 'things they say' column entry? Did Mr Wilson say it now?

I can't answer your question, but I've always wondered if this related quote was similarly apocryphal.

Interviewer: Who is the laziest member of New Order?
Hooky: Ian Curtis.

if wilson denied it by saying "i never said that ian curtis dying was the best thing that happened in my life," wouldn't he then technically have said it?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, technically it would still be true, as the "I never said" part would still be true, but one second later, after finishing the sentence, he wouldn;t be able to repeat the sentence and it still be true. Technically.

I like the bit in 24 hr party people when wilson looks into ian curtis' coffin and says 'Nice one!'. no doubt also apocraphyl, but strangely credible

Nope, this is definitely true, it's part of the NewOrderStory film, you can buy the DVD and everything. In context, it's very funny.

Cool, will need to check that out. I always found it absolutely hilarious, would like to actually see Hooky saying it.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I've heard them all say several supposedly disrespectful things about Curtis. But it's just Bluff Northern Humour(TM). The same thing in the 24hr film where Hook is trying to get Curtis fags out of his pocket while he (Curtis) is having a fit (something he (Hook) claims Morris did in reality iirc).

Wilson was probably trying to say (if he said anything) something about how dead people sell records, so nothing particularly shocking there.

This quote is on the page dedicated to May 1990 so the quote comes from then, well according to Q and not that Q exactly needs a nostalgia page or anything given that it's got Oasis on the front and a Queen meets Maradona article.

xpost

Or that it gave him focus or something, thinking more seriously for one moment.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

hmm. But suppose Twilson decided to sue Q for publishing it as if he said it recently (it says nothing about the age of the 'quote' on the column). A bit like the Maria Carey 'flies' 'quote' of a few years ago.

Wasn't this said at a press conference in New York when AHW was trying to sell 'baggy' to the US? CMJ in 1990 or so.

Yep, it's in NewOrderStory, and Hooky even goes on to say that he hasn't seen him do fuck all in years!

The "Wake up America, you're dead" one?

to which Derrick May replied "that man has got two assholes...one where it should be, and the other one where his mouth is"...I love Derrick May, but that is a lousy put-down...
