Gotta second the love for "Up With People", the almost Afropop sounding whistles and noises that pop in very, very briefly between guitar squalls make that track.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

ok,so you guys have heard it.color me jealous.i know it´s frowned up in these circles to inquire on whether not it´s l***ed...so um,won´t do that.fuck it,how did you hear it?

CemetaryMeatWaffle (babypudding), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

it's "out there".
dunno where. it just arrived from the depths of nowhere.
sorry, but peeps just nice, i suppose!

eedd, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

"The Adversary" and "Up With People" back to back might almost be too much. Both songs are so good. That right there is like the best ten minutes of rock thus far this year. There's a lot more of the Incredible String Band type of droney folk on this one, like a fifty-fifty split with the rock stuff. The album's really good, but not as pleasant as The Wedding, and maybe the first Oneida album that doesn't really hold any surprises. It's kinda exactly what you'd expect from an Oneida record. Still, one of the best things I've heard this year.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

ahh,the cryptic responses flood out.come on eedd, gimme some real knowledge!

CemetaryMeatWaffle (babypudding), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

see...i decided to follow my girlfriend to spain...we´re staying at her cousin´s house.he has this awful program titled emule.let´s just say-it´s no soulseek.forgive me people,i´m cranky...and a little bitter.oneida put a genuine smile on my face.i haven´t had one lately.ha!go ahead,do the violin thing with your fingers...

CemetaryMeatWaffle (babypudding), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Promo copies of it went out a few weeks ago so I'm guessing that is the source.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

tripmaker-thanks a bunch.i´ll end my whining.maybe.if more people start talking about how good it is...i might change course.

CemetaryMeatWaffle (babypudding), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard it. I wonder if the community station I volunteer at got one. I doubt it. I've seen them do "Up With People" at shows, though, and it is great. I think they've included "The Adversary" in sets, too.
They've added Phil Manley from TransAm to their lineup and he plays on the record.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

nah, just as was said, promo copies abound. nothing more.

Up With People is JUST what the doctor ordered for me!! it's wonderously chunky and herky-jerky. Adversary is a face melter, too!

it seems almost like a blend of the Wedding and Secret Wars. i have NO doubt that the live shows will be epic!! as always.

ahhh, Oneida, how i loves thee...

eedd, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Unfortunately they were Rainbow-less at the MIT show a few weeks back. I wonder if his presence will let 'em work the less rocking stuff into the setlists. Like two-thirds of the Wedding never really got played live, I don't think.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Up With People I think came from the period when Jane was away and Kid and Bobby were playing as a duo called People of the North or something? I saw this arrangement play that song 2 or 3 times, always amazing, then with Bobby. Most memorably, at the Good Bad Art Gallery or whatever that ex garage art space near the Kellog Diner is called, it was dark in there.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Up With People was a fucking mindblower live - can't wait for the new record!

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

the last album bored my fucking face off so i hope this one leaves my face the fuck alone

ath (ath), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

The Wedding is such a good album. So is the new album called Up With People or Happy New Year?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Happy New Year. "Up With People" is a song and kind of the epic on this one. It's also been a live staple for a few years now, so the anticipation has been building.

And ATH, what bored you about The Wedding?

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Is it safe to say that most of Oneida's fans are New Yorkers, and that without them, they wouldnt exist (lack of interest)?

Tubail, Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that's the case.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm no New Yorker. They seem to do well in Boston and Atlanta, at least.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

new york?????
hardly...
unless somehow, and unknowingly to all involved, pittsburgh suddenly transformed into NYC, that's not the case, at all.

in fact, speakin for a pal that doesn't post here, well recieved in VA as well.

eedd, Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

also popular down here in NC, can't wait to see them again later in the summer

Stingy (stingy), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not from NY. I'm not even in the same continent!
Theres quite a few Scottish fans about. It's not often I know people who like the same bands as I do.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

under no fucking circumstances am i a new yorker.

Is it safe to say "Who gives a fuck?"

edde (edde), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

this might be my favorite Oneida album (but I haven't heard them all yet)

i drink the haterade (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

It's really hard to beat Each One Teach One (imho), but really, they all have something to offer. The recent 1-2 punch of Preteen Weaponry and Rated O was pretty incredible, for starters.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 13 August 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

Can't disagree with this. My favourite out of Preteen Weaponry and Rated O is whichever one's playing at the time.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Friday, 13 August 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

I've said this before, but I personally prefer the more song-oriented albums like Happy New Year and The Wedding to their newer, less structured stuff, but that's just me. I can recognize how Rated O is really good but I'm just not as interested in listening to it.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 August 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

i really like the droney folk vibe of this record. The first four songs are awesome in sequence...

i drink the haterade (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

Sometimes I think The Adversary is their best song.

Trip Maker, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

thank u for listening suggestions because this is a fine idea

two years pass...

Not sure if there is a better place for this, doesn't seem to be a more "current" Oneida thread, but just read this cool piece on the making of "Each One Teach One", which was just a massive event record for me when it came out. Interviews with most parties involved, including Papa.

grandavis, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's posted somewhere else around here I think, but yeah thats a GREAT article...

^loves belaboured seething (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

Couldn't think of where else to post it other than the rolling psych thread, but really Oneida should have its own thread. That article really is great, and I LOVE that period of the band. Was hugely on board with them at that point in my life, and "Sheets of Easter" was a real rallying point. Certainly separated the wheat from the chaff (which Bobby himself suggested was the point of opening with it on those tours).

grandavis, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

That's a great era and a great album, but I really think Rated O has replaced EOTO as the band's magnum opus.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

Different eras, not possible for me to choose. I really liked Oneida mark 2 (i.e., the original quartet lineup), but I can see where they have grown and find it really interesting. Need to spend more time with "Rated O" to be honest, which is part of what is great about it. Lots to revisit.

grandavis, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

There are a few random Oneida release-related threads but it seems like this one has become the default
Oneida -- You'e having a laugh

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

Ahh, forgot about that thread. Not sure it came up in my search though, which is weird.
