So far this year, only one rap album has made the UK top 40.

Notorious B.I.G., "Duets", got to #17. If you wanna classify the Streets as a "rap" act, you can make it two. Fiddy, Kanye, and BEP all made re-entries, but that doesn't count.

So, taking these statistics into consideration, the entire rap universe is currently a third as popular in the UK as Jack Johnson, and equally as popular as Wolfmother. Discuss.

What about Gnarls?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

This is the thing, there's no shortage of top 40s for acts that get filed under "urban" (Mary J Blige, Chris Brown, Corinne Bailey Rae, Ne-Yo, Prince, Gladys Knight & The Pips(!), Gnarls Barkley, Rihanna, Jamie Foxx), but there's just death for rap album sales in the UK. Why are we loving the guest verse on an R&B track but not the full lengther?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Well, someone like Ludacris, for example, is shite over 4-minutes but fucking great over a verse. Maybe popular consensus agrees with that, finally? Also, maybe rap albums this year have sucked as far as commercial appeal goes?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Keep Geir away from this thread!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

oh keep Geir out of this, Sick Mouthy's doing fine

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Geir and Lex are advised to stick to other threads, yes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

i just checked everyhit and 'Ironman' is the only Ghostface album to have made the UK top 40.

Well, someone like Ludacris, for example, is shite over 4-minutes

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'm amazed this hasn't got 30 replies already.

The Potion that I downloaded had about four decent tunes.

I love Luda as a guest for a verse, and I like most of Word of Mouf, but listen to all of Chicken & Beer? No thanks.

That's pretty shocking for 12 months, innit?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Are then any actual bona fide rap "stars" in the UK now though, post Jay-Z (assuming he's not gonna release another album)? Obviously NOT bona fide UK rap stars, just people who could guarantee hit singles, double-platinum album sales and enormo gigs?

Fiddy? The Game? Who the fuck even is The Game?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

but listen to all of Chicken & Beer? No thanks.

yeah me neither, but, well, same with *most albums* right?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Because you still like grime

This proves that grime is the UK answer to hip hop bcz we like neither of them over here.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Does it basically come down to the fact that US rappers make enough money stateside to not have to bother with making in-roads to the UK market? As opposed to, I dunno, Scissor Sisters or Eels who were never going to make big money if they stayed over there, so they toured and promoted themselves as if the UK was a second home.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

you said yourself that no-one under 27 buys records...

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

and isn't radio 2 the country's most successful radio station?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Potion that I downloaded had about four decent tunes.

'The Potion' is just one of those four tunes...and four tunes is about average album decent tune ratio for me so w'evs.

Jump down turn around pick a bale of cotton... (blueski), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Radio 2 is by far the most popular radio station in the UK, and, yeah, apart from the occasional Kanye and Eminem track, rap's not exactly what their lifeblood. is.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Henry - NO! At least, I hope not. I still want albums.

I think Dom just nailed it.

x-posts.

this is for last year? i'm semi-surprised not to see lil kim there, and disbelieving not to see missy there.

i can't think of all that many big hip hop albums released this year which 'should' have done well. ghostface? wvs. spank rock? brilliant but not a chart proposition.

Does it basically come down to the fact that US rappers make enough money stateside to not have to bother with making in-roads to the UK market?

didn't we establish that the answer to this was 'yes' sometime two years ago?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno, for me not so much with the rap albums...

i've just realised that even though i'm still in the '2006 has just begun' mindset, it is in fact nearly june! wtf. what big hip hop albums are scheduled for release later this year?

(also r&b >>>> hip hop)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

But does that mean back in 84/85 we had Big Daddy Kane doing the Camden toilet circuit because he wasn't selling enough stateside?

(xx-post)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

does the US version of 'nation of millions' have all that 'london england' stuff?

GET A MAC.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Even though rap isn't selling big it still has an influence. From The Sun today:

TONY Blair’s school discipline adviser yesterday blamed rap music for fuelling pupil violence.

Sir Alan Steer blasted lyrics that refer to women as “whores” and “bitches”.

He said: “There is a violent aspect to youth culture — you look at rap music, for example.”

He also said: "Macs are gay."

And he added that hip-hop is also “incredibly anti-women and dire”.

Rappers often sing about guns and violence.

Sir Alan urged parents to look for signs their children were falling into the rap lifestyle.

He warned: “If you don’t stand up for your morality when bringing up your children, it’s damn sure they will pick up somebody else’s.

“We’ve got to make it plain to parents, teachers and society that these are abominations.”

His comments follow the murder of Kiyan Prince, 16, outside school gates in North London.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

One line of that is made up, I admit.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Emma's little brother's friend assualted a teacher yesterday and got arrested. Emma and I both have Macs and Emma's other brothers listens to lots of rap. I feel we are all three to blame. I once cooked the assualter king prawn red curry with spinach and noodles. Never again.

A Captain Sensible reissue is going to be your Christmas #1. That should give good cheer to UK rap fans!
