i get tons of bad "beat-laced" "4-track" "experiments" from people in bands who are going it alone and showing their love for "Brian Wilson", "Neu", "Ennio Morricone", and other faves. There are always, like, 50 bands and genres listed as influences on the new "project" by the bass player for the Screaming Dingbats who wanted to "take some time off" and "get back to basics" with these "simple and disarming" yet "lyrically complex" "pop/rock/rap/punk/electronic/psych" compositions that inevitably all sound the same except for the 30-second electronic "sound collage" intros. Everyone wants to be a basement diy super-genius. why exactly? it smells in the basement. anyway:

destroy: James Figurine on Plug Research (some dude from the postal service who was "inspired" by a Kompakt cd!!! (total 3, i think) to make a bad electronic whatzit album with guest shots by jenny lewis and erland oye and some other people i can't remember.

search: Philip E. Karnats - Pleasesuite (the guitarist (ex-guitarist? are they still a band?) from Tripping Daisy (a band i've never heard). It' pretty good! spacey and poppy. it actually sounds homemade in a good way. he has a couple people helping out on vocals, i think, but it's mostly just him. Tim Ellison would probably dig this album (buyer beware!).

There's lots out there. I kinda prefer folks who have been doing it that way all along but that's me. Pwdre Ser is a new fave of mine, friendly dude too.

yeah, i just want to hear about interesting stuff and new stuff that is worth seeking out. no new jandek answers. if something is really bad though, please out it for what it is.

I love me the Kitchen Cynics, who I first heard at Terrastock -- Alan is also a prince of a guy, very friendly and enthusiastic.

Then there's the Floating World too. Drifty and zoney, aka very me.

Scott,

Jimmy Tamborello (James Figurine) has been making ambient techno since at least 1993 (when we DJ-d together). I highly doubt that he was wholly inspired by Total 3, check out his record under the name "Antihouse".

How dare you clutter this debate with facts, Steve.

Me! Me! I'm great!

is Radioface's solo thing just him? i'd be curious to hear it. i always thought the guitarist was the, um, brains in that outfit. people really seemed to like HIS solo thing (or things?), right?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

This is pretty good, but I only listened to it a couple of times and I don't think it made much of a splash.

Search: Wavves

From SD, CA. It has beach punk roots, if you don't mind the simplicity. It kind of makes me want to skateboard again.

Go straight to Houseache Horse

Exempliary as the eccentric but friendly ultra lo-fi singer songwriter teetering on the verge of a nervous breakdown in a live situation guy.

Great CD too.

Also Bob Drake, especially 'The Shunned Country' cd of minature musical ghost stories which deserves it's own thread really.

I like Wavves. Sounds like a lot of other stuff coming out at the moment though, all that Times New Viking/No Age/etc etc stuff.
