Pitchfork only gave it a 6.5 but Stylus gave it an A-. I think it's a pretty good album and just below their brillant debut album.

after 3 or 4 listens, I'm not sure it's on par with "Bows & Arrows," their wonderful sophomore release. However, I love the supercharged "tenleytown" and "always after you."

Gonna need some more time with this one before my "final thoughts."

three months pass...
i bought this today. it seems good.

i haven't heard the walkmen before. it's more classic rock than i thought it would be. i thought they'd sound like the strokes or something. this reminds me of like 66 dylan if he was a post punk dude or something.

They won me over at a show this summer. Good 'ol sweaty rock 'n roll with a snarl. No preening fancypants shit. I still prefer Bows + Arrows, but this is pretty good too. They definitely have it in them to deliver a classic rock album. I'm waiting.

First album >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> second album > third album

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Not really familiar with the first album, but it gets points for including "Wake Up".

I dig the album, especially the opener with the Mexicali trumpet thang.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 21 September 2006 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

I pretty much agree with Johnny Fever, but I also think Cosmo has a point in saying that they caould very well deliver a classic at some point.

i don't be knowin' their earlier albums!
i'm living in the now!

(but i'll prolly buy one now)

this is a good record.

it reminds me of the grifters.

sort of. not really. but something of the spirit of the grifter is in here.

i'm interested enough in them to own 'bows & arrows' and enjoy it, but i don't think i'll get round to checking out the new one anytime soon. simply don't have the time to devote to it, what with all the other music i need to be listening to and shit i need to be reading.

man, i don't know. once i got over what i thought this was supposed to sound like, it's pretty great actually. reminds me of a better version of this band the cuts whose first album i kinda dug a few years ago.

You'll probably like their earlier stuff too. In a moment of weakness yesterday I bought their first album. I like it but it sounds like a first album. Great, raw energy along with some ideas that feel half-baked. I love the way it's mixed, though, with the drums up front and the piano echoing from the back. They've sort of developed their own haunted rawk sound.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 21 September 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

That's interesting. I'd wondered what going back to the first album might be like for someone who had only heard later material. Little about it really feels half-baked to me, but I've had almost five years to get acquainted with it (including the time I spent with the singles leading up to its release).

i'm really interested in hearing song-by-song cover of nilsson's pussy cats (this is the "lost weekend" album w/ john lennon) that they're putting out later this year. such a weird, great record -- one of the most chiltonesque things nilsson ever did.

a hundred miles off has some very riveting stuff but it's more in the song structures (kinda breathtaking changes and melodic leaps) than the songs themselves, which feel a bit under-written. and the sequencing feels off -- love love love the mazarin cover but it should be a b-side or something. "louisiana" i've really cooled on. my favorite songs are the '60s-dylan-gone-DC-hardcore ones.

any cop (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

looks like "many rivers to cross" is on their myspace.

'60s-dylan-gone-DC-hardcore ones.

that's a good description actually...like 66 dylan meets nation of ulysses or something.

seventeen years pass...

“all hands and the cook” is so good

My fave album of theirs by a fair margin (You & Me and Lisbon were admirable follow-ups IMO, but this is their peak for me)--indie-sleaze white-dress-shirt garage-punk Dylan's at the wedding again, baybee

that's actually a really great description of their live show
