This is a cool video:

I love how the toaster repeats "I'm a white man, I'm a white man", as if to avoid ethnic confusion...

Even though this was mainly a central European genre, don't forget this British classic

Urban Cookie Collective: "The Key, The Secret"

The lead singer for UCC was Diane Charlemagne, who also sings on Goldie's "Timeless", and who I though was superhot back when I was 14. Actually, I still think she is.

Bakc in 1993, DJ Bobo did his cover of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me", with new lyrics:

DJ Bobo: "Somebody Dance With Me"

Who says long-haired Swiss can't rap? I liked this song better though:

DJ Bobo: "Everybody"

"Waterfall" is a great, great track, but it's house rather than Eurodance.

Jam & Spoon: "Right in the Night"

Plavka, the featured singer here, had one of the greatest voices in Eurodance. Even better was the follow-up single, "Find Me", but I couldn't find the video for that. But "Right in the Night" has one of the more innovative Eurodance videos (Jam and Spoon are the two guys playing chess there), and of course the immortal phrase, "just come and get me in my big big bed of love".

R.I.P. Mark Spoon.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Though the song is a bit daft... I'd say by 1996 the glory days of Europop were over, with mediocre second-wave acts like E-Rotic or Mr. President coming through.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

To be honest, my participation in this thread amounts more to an altogether mix of nostalgia and ironic hipster posturing, as I still find most of this music very basic and all. But trying a little bit of objective analysis here, I'd say the glory days of Eurodance were somewhere between 1992/1996, yeah, at least comercially speaking (and we can't separate the commercial side here, since that was what the producers were striving for, basically: instant commercial results). By 1996, there were already signs that Eurodance (that unabashed, poppy sound/spirit, at least) was getting eaten up by the emergence of the superclub ethos/culture. I'd say Robert Miles' "Children" and its blockbuster success, more than any other, marked that turning point when "serious" dance music producers took a bite of some of Eurodance's traits (namely the big, hooky synth/bass lines) and sold it in a much more "credible" package. And hence you had your Euro-trance, with stuff like ATB, Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk et al on one side; the hard-dance stuff from Alarma, Cosmic Gate, Brooklyn Bounce, you name it, on the other; and all kinds of stuff in between.
If "proper" Eurodance has managed to survive, it was with acts like Aqua, Eiffel 65 and such, which, in all honesty, were a contemporary variation on bubblegum-pop than anything else. Nowadays, Eurodance has more to do with cover version acts like DJ Sammy, Mad'House and other really subpar stuff like that.
This is my take, at least.

Ricardo (jaxxalude), Friday, 26 May 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

No Eurodance, no T.A.T.U.

I couldn't admit that I really enjoyed most of this stuff when it was big. Most of my friends were either alt-rockers or 'ARRRDKORRRRE!!!1 rave kids, so I would've been kicked out of the sandbox, or at least teased real good.

This is the music of my teen years, and I've never had any ironic distance to it. I guess for me part of the glory days ending has to do with growing up: when you reach your late teens, you start to view anything so gloriously poppy and naive with a critical eye, and gain a stance, an atttitude that says you can't like stuff like, 'cause it's not cool and hip. But now, at 26, I'm old enough not to let coolness or hipness dictate what I like, so I can again appreciate the music like the teenage me did. But one reason I'm not sure I'd want to witness an Eurodance revival is because it'd probably run exactly on irony and hipster detachment, and that was never what Eurodance was about. Ironic appropriation of unironic music is one of the worst things there is.

The chorus melody of this tune is lifted straight from some earlier British club tune, can't remember what it was though. Very pretty song anyway.

Cool, someone's uploaded a video by Dance Nation, one of the first Finnish Eurodance acts:

The video is super goofy, but looking at members of group in it, I'm sure they were in on the joke.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

U96 had several classic tunes, I'd almost forgotten about this one. When I was a teen the video and the tune felt kinda deep compared to the usual Eurodance tropes:

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

This one sounds totally dope even today! (At least if you don't count the synth flute.) I can't remember who the vocalist is, but she's pretty great.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

In 1993 someone called Beverly did a nice upbeat version of Jennifer Rush's "The Power of Love". I really liked this song when I was 1993, and I still think this is best version of it:

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

Tuomas, the Snap singer is Niki Harris, a former Madonna backup singer. i like her, but Turbo B, who did 'The Power' and 'Rhythm is a Dancer,' rates much higher for me. but mostly because 'Rhythm is a Dancer' might be one of the best pop songs of the nineties.

Currently watching the 2012 edition of Super Diskoteka 90x on Youtube - it's a huge annual concert with acts like Scooter and Dr Albarn, along with tonnes of beyond-classic Russian Eurodance (Ruki Vverh, Virus, Akula, etc) from the turn of the millennium.

Scooter are amazing. Would love to see them live.

Ruki Vverh are still sounding good, even if they aren't as svelte as they were in their prime.

Hey guys, I'm doing a mixtape for tonight, and I'm looking for an Eurodance/Eurohouse tune that would segue nicely after Nightcrawlers' "Push the Feeling On", any suggestions? It should preferably be roughly in the same BPM range (120 to 130) and not sound too different from "Push the Feeling On"... "Show Me Love" is an obvious choice because it has the same synth sound, but are there any others?
