Richard Linklater apparently makes films to this creative rhythm. I doubt he's the only director, oscillating between blockbusters and personal projects to satisfy both coffers and creative impulse.

But does anyone in the music world do this? Frusciante's solo albums vs RHCP? Anyone else?

Springsteen fits. He's alternated big commercial rock albums (The River, Born in the USA) with more personal purposely smaller records...Nebraska, Tunnel of Love.

He's still doing it, The Rising was his big rock album, followed with Devils and Dust and now the Seeger Sessions.
