this looks amazing except there's no hard drive and it's kind of big and it's not really an mp3 player.

Pretty much every player apart from the Apple lineup...iAudio X5, Creative Zen Vision M, Archos Gmini, Philips HDD6330, etc.

i hear the Cowon JetAudio X5 is the best mp3 player and recorder out there.

But do they have proper mic inputs? I've been searching for a portable HDD (or decent size flash memory) audio recorder, which can record uncompressed audio, has a good quality mic input, and can transfer files to a computer via USB.

This one is kind've like what dan posted above. Again, not really an mp3 player an uses flash instead of a (potentially much larger) hard drive.

I have an iAudio X5, and while it does have a proper line-level input (requiring an included accessory connector), it won't record uncompressed audio (stereo 320 kb/s MP3 is the high quality setting). Sorry. I'm very happy with it for my purposes, though.

I fully recommend the Microtrack 24/96, I had one until some fuckwit stole my bag in New Zealand. Downside is battery life of under 10 hours. More of a proffessional recording that you can listen to mp3s on.
