Don't get me wrong, I love it here, and I've learned a great deal. It just seems a bit ironic to me that a good portion of threads seem more targeted at music that people dislike or even hate than that which they love.

I'm certainly not expecting, or for that matter even wanting a forum that is all gushing and pedestal-placing, but I sure wouldn't be opposed to seeing a bit more positivity in general. I guess I just don't understand the desire to spend time and energy on music that I don't like.

no! leave now! learn to hate today the music you liked yesterday! and then come back and join the HIVEMIND

I blame the hippies of the 60's. They watered-down 'love,' and still got laid. The beatniks were last great real lovers.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

To me it's any performer who is more concerned with appearance and stage presence than creating or performing quality music. In my opinion, Britney Spears is the current queen, and 50 Cent is the reigning king.

Why Are Dave Matthews So Good and Loved By ILM.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair the overwhelming majority of shorty's posts are positive. I just came across that one right after reading this thread and it made me chuckle.

Still, he does like it Trad, Dad.

How about ILP. I mean, I think most of the posters here are united by love for pop in some category or another.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Top ILM fact! We called it I Love Music cos there was an I Hate Music on Freaky Trigger already and the two named looked good together on the front page. There is a lot of negativity on the forum. Some of it is unneccessary - it's easier and quicker to say something cheap and nasty than to make a case - some of it is not, a lot of it is funny.

Part of loving something is hating it.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), May 25th, 2006.

By the way, that was quite Zen of you, Ned. Rarely do we hear such rational discourse on internet message boards.

punis (punis), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

I came into this thread to hate, and then the way shorty phrased his question kinda won me over, and then somebody quoted his "these pop acts suck" schtick and I got aggro again. So, yes, shorty. The name of this forum is appropriate. Most of the people who post here love music. See how I didn't call you a cunt at the end of the sentence like I was gonna. That's love right there.

I'm just confused as to how Britney could possibly be the reigning queen of appearance/performance considering she has let herself go and no longer performs.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

I had just finished smoking a big fatty

Is this a reference to oral sex? I am not very up on the slang of today.

alext (alext), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

You don't write on "I love music" because you hate music. You write it because you love it, and you're sick to death of it being mistreated.
J. Lydon.

(Paraphrased slightly.)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

ok, ok I can laugh at myself, especially after burning one down (I'm sure ya don't actually require clarification alext, but just in case check out the Ben Harper tune "Burn One Down". I don't think that can be confused as a euphemism for a blow-job, but hey, that's me LOL).

Damn I knew someone would call me on the Britney thing! Extra points go to Noodle for not only catching me on that, but for also pointing out that at least I do tend more toward the positive in my posts. ;)

But come on folks, there is a difference between giving an honest negative opinion to a direct question and spewing useless vitriol threadstarters. If I had started a thread by stating something along the lines of "Britney sucks cuz she's a no-talent white-trash whore", I'd definitely be on shakey ground indeed (oh shit, that did feel good, if just for a second!). For the record, I don't think she has no talent (she's a helluva dancer), I just don't think any of it is musical, and her fame definitely outgrew her abilites.

Anyhow, I'm picking up my first electric geetar and amp tomorrow morning, so rest-assured any post "smoke from the sweet grass" energy will go into "raising the goblet of rock" rather than "sensitive pony-tail man" posts, at least for the next little while!

shorty (shorty), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

There are a lot of threads where people write about hating music, but also a lot where people are enthusiastically lovin' music. (The former category tends to be mostly on indie bands, and the latter tends to be about pop.)

Plus, I would say that on C/D threads, 80% of the answers lean towards C.
