One great song in an otherwise mediocre/crap record

1. Leave them all behind, from Ride - Going blank again - rich, bombastic production, with Byrds like vocals (as in "nowhere" but more polished). The rest is average brit rock pop.

2. Conventional Lullabies, from Young and Sexy - Panic when you find it - sounds like Mamas and Papas with The Shins and Outrageous Cherry.
the rest is average twee.

3. Country Feedback, from R.E.M - out of time. The guitars are excellent, the song is sad and touching.the rest is uninspiring.

4. ?

"1. Leave them all behind, from Ride - Going blank again"

Haha! this is totally true! well Twisterella is okay too...

I have tons of records like this, particularly older stuff prior to the formal advent of the "long playing album".

"My Favorite Things" on "The Love Below" I KID I KID.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

"Such a Fool" - The 22-20s' self-titled debut
Kickass Raigning-Sound-like track on an otherwise shitty record.

Ron E. Mexico, Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm completely blanking on what I played at a recent listening party we did on this theme.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Reigning Sound, that is

Ron E. Mexico, Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

The Cynics - Creepin - great psych tune with lovely keyboards.the rest is less than average of a garage record.("Twelve flights up").

p.s. lots of Garage bands can fit here.

coco the kid, Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

"The Dark is Rising" - Mercury Rev, "Deserters Songs". I never listen to the rest of the album, but those opening verses are beautiful.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

It probably doesn't fit with the rest of the album cos it's supposed to be on All Is Dream.

I Hate You Little Girls (noodle vague), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

plus Love - Out Here - Signed D.C. - Arthur Lee never sounded better than this dramatic piece of Led Zep/Hendrix.the rest is almost crap.(Willow willow is also nice as a matter of fact)

coco the kid, Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

haha thx noodle

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

"Dear Friend", on The Wings' "Wild Life". Their worst ever album, where the only thing worth listening to was this beautiful ballad (McCartney's response to "How Do You Sleep")

"Portions For Foxes"

Like A Hurricane on Neil Young's American Stars n Bars

To Repel Ghosts on the newest Manic Street Preachers record

Although I can't say I've heard the record, whatever album contains Lou Gramm's Midnight Blue would have to qualify.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

"California" on the Wax album. What a piece of shit record. Full price for something that's 20 minutes long.

punis (punis), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Memoirs Of An Officer And a Gentleman" on "Love Beach" by ELP. The rest of the album is just as crap as it is generally considered to be. However, this masterpiece does take up one half of the album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 25 May 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Like A Hurricane on Neil Young's American Stars n Bars"

NO WAY! "Bite the Bullet"! "Old Country Waltz"! "Hold Back the Tears"! "Homegrown"!! I love that album.

Love Beach is a masterpiece! A Taste Of My Love and Love Beach alone make it worth seeking out.

"The Past That Suits You Best" on The Delgados "The Great Eastern".
A few of the other songs are ok, but not even close to the opener.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think "Wild Life" qualifies as either mediocre or crap. It's 90% awesome in my world. Another love letter from Paul's glory days and you may call me a twat for that if you like. If there had been a couple of big production numbers and a smattering of ukelele it would be indistinguishable from Ram. "Bip Bop" is annoying though.

"The Past That Suits You Best" on The Delgados "The Great Eastern".

Interesting - I was about to post the same about "We're Coming In From The Cold" and Hate.

"Bouncin' Back" on Mystikal's Tarantula. It's pretty much "Shake Ya Ass" part 2, but it's still deadly. The rest of the album (i think only one other song is a neptunes tune) is astonishingly forgettable and forgotten.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

I never got around to "Hate". Should I just download that one song and call it a day?
x-post

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Out Of Time" does of course contain "Losing My Religion" and also a couple of nice tracks, so it doesn't belong. I'd rather pick "What's The Frequency Kenneth", which is actually the only listenable song on the "Monster" album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't forget "Pussy Crook".

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

byrds like vocals?
cool yer boots, time machine, ox4, chrome waves, these are probably all better than leave them all behind which always promised more than it delivered. if they had put 'howard hughes' and 'stampede' on the album instead of 'not fazed' and 'time of her time' it might have been better than nowhere.

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda" by Iron Butterfly on their album "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", this song is a 60s one hit wonder.
The song itself isn't that good it only has the longest drum solo ever recorded (the song is a total of 17:02)

crinville, Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

Going blank again - rich, bombastic production, with Byrds like vocal

I love most of Going Blank Again but the vocals remind me more of like a late-90s boy bands than the Byrds. Definitely the loudest record that recalls a boy band.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

"This Is England" on Cut the Crap
"Motorcycle Emptiness" on Generation Terrorists
"Coming in To Land" on Have You Fed the Fish?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 26 May 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Going Blank Again" is an insanely amazing EP + filler to round out the album.

Speaking of ex-shoegazers, "Coastline" from Rachel Goswell's "Waves are Universal" is a fantastic track on an otherwise boring record.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 May 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

"Kiss Me Deadly" - Generation X.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 26 May 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Another shoegaze one: Adorable - "Sunshine Smile" in "Against Perfection"

Also "There She Goes" in "The La's"

daavid (daavid), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Dear Friend", on The Wings' "Wild Life". Their worst ever album, where the only thing worth listening to was this beautiful ballad (Mcartney's response to "How Do You Sleep")

Wild Life ain't great, but if it's to be a "one great song" situation, "Mumbo" for all its stupidity is clearly the song in question.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

sunshine smile wasn't on against perfection. and you'd be wrong even if it was

there she goes is one of the dullest tracks on the la's

xpost

"wheels of fortune" on the doobie brothers mid 70s "takin' it to the streets" (it's better than the more popular title track and much better then anyyythhhing else on the record)

jarrod, Friday, 26 May 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

sunshine smile wasn't on against perfection. and you'd be wrong even if it was

-Yes it was.

there she goes is one of the dullest tracks on the la's

-No it isn't.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

I really like Wild Life. Sort of surprised Geir doesn't like "Some People Never Know" and "Tomorrow," too.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

-Yes it was.

whatever. it was most assuredly not on the UK or australian versions of that album.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

You're right, it only appeared in the US version (the one I have).

daavid (daavid), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't forget "Pussy Crook".

Wait, Mystikal has a song called "Pussy Crook"!? Seriously? Irony!

OTM - that album is very mediocre apart from that song.

Harvey Danger "Flagpole Sitta" on Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 26 May 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

still more shoegaze:

"Butterfly Girl", from the Nightblooms self-titled LP...

hank (hank s), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" almost fits in here. Only almost, because "Everyday I Write The Book" and "Pills And Soap" are OK songs too, but "Shipbuilding" is one of his best ever songs, on an otherwise mediocre album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 26 May 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Royal trux - Accelerator - only "liar" and "stevie" are great.the rest is shit, though i know lots of people will disagree

coco the kid, Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Don't Tear Me Up on Mick Jagger's Wandering Spirit

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 27 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

"Brownsville Girl" on Dylan's "Knocked Out Loaded".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 May 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Nightblooms "Butterfly Girl" is so wrong. Especially since the best track on the album is "1000 Years." Butterfly Girl *is* different from everything else on the album, so presumably someone might like it and hate the rest...

With Ride kicking off the thread, I'm surprised that 'Black Nite Crash' off of Tarantula didn't make an appearance. Maybe "great" is stretching it, but compared to its surroundings it's pretty great.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Saturday, 27 May 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Portions For Foxes"

OTMFM.

it's maybe a bit early to be so dismissive, but "oh mandy" from the spinto band album probably belongs on this list too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 27 May 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Snrub OTM on "This is England" -- that was my pick at the aforementioned party. I've tried many times with "Cut the Crap," but . . . geez.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 27 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

No mention of "Loving The Alien" yet? (Although I must admit I like "Tonight" - the song - too)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 May 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

"corruption" off iggy's "avenue b".

Springsteen: Human Touch

Only the title track is memorable, but it's a truly great song.
