renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Um Soft Bulletin weighs a ton....if you try to throw it away you might hurt your back....its pretty tasty,

Josh

Joshua Hoe (jbhdb8), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

i don't like his voice! funnily enough, though, one of the only songs on there that i'll miss is "a spoonful weighs a ton" ... the other is "what is the light". when i listen to the album i just skip to those and ignore the rest. i'll give it another shot, though.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:56 (nineteen years ago)

no, but you should sell me vibracathedral orchestra, 23 skidoo, and roots manuva for $2 each before the rest goes in the dumpster.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

i would definitely keep detroit escalator co although that's not the best one. i would also keep the alec empire album and then relisten to:

thomas brinkmann - urus martan
dynamix ii - electro megamix
clouddead - s/t
roots manuva - brand new second hand
missy elliot - this is not a test
andrea parker - the dark ages
japan - tin drum
ellen allien - stadtkind

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

this is not a yard sale.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

andrea parker = boring plodding neo electro

roots manuva = wack raps about nothing

clouddead = wack raps about god knows what ... "nobody dated me in high school, so i grew an afro and did too much drugs in college"? been there, done that. i'll make my own clouddead album.

japan = too disappointing that nothing else is as good as "ghosts"

brinkmann = weirdly, it seems to lack momentum

stadtkind = yeah, i should relisten to it. i always enjoy it. i think it's another postrock album, just like autechre's "confield" was a postrock album.

alec empire = i like having it because it's a cool fuck-off album but i can never get through it.

vibracathedral = i dunno, i have all the sunroof albums, but this doesn't do it for me. not forceful enough? it sounds too distant.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Roots Manuva - Brand New Second Hand.
Slint - Spiderland.
23 Skiddoo - Seven Songs
Missy Elliot - This Is Not A Test!
Ellen Allien - Stadtkind.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures."

What is wrong with you?! Slint? Joy Division? WTF?

GLC, Friday, 26 May 2006 05:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah keep slint

jergins (jergins), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

when should i listen to slint? i don't really feel as angry anymore as i did when i was a teenager. same w/ joy division. in what sort of situations does one listen to joy division?

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes when i have the urge to listen to something like joy division i end up listening to the VSS or satisfact instead. "unknown pleasures" sounds sort of washed-out to me, the way eric b + rakim sounds next to epmd. maybe i'm not immersed enough in the genre.

slint was ok but i'm just inured to the soft-loud-soft-loud thing by now. the 1st track is really amazing, w/ those weird buzzy overtones in the guitar distortion but i'm not really big on the rest of it.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

toss it all.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

What the hell, there are plenty of great albums here.

POV: Unknown Pleasures, The Ascension, Waveform Transmission Vol 2, one of the Neil Landstrumm albums (I always liked him), Spiderland.

Keep ddamage, "Radio Ape" too because I first listened to it based on your suggestion (although admittedly only about half of it is any good, but the good stuff is *really* good).

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

neil landstrumm does "she's lost control"

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

agh that was supposed to be a direct link to the page with the audio

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

that's how i feel about it, too! the 1st third i'm like "oh fuck, hell yeah", the 2nd third i'm like "hmmm ... anything else going on?" and by track eight i'm like "ok, enough".

i bought ascension because i like "lesson no 2" but ... it's different, somehow.

i bought "waveform transmission" thinking it was "minimal nation". i really dig "internal empire" and "art of war" (not as hot on "nighttime world 1 + 2" but i'm keeping them) but this isn't developed enough for me.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

i guess what i want here is SITUATIONS ... like "don't throw away that cristian vogel album, you'll need it for that night you're sitting around drinking beers w/ the bunny from donnie darko, getting high smoking cat litter"

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

i guess i feel like i bought a lot of this stuff just because i felt like i had to have it ... maybe this is a reaction to that?

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

Give everything a chance but "Soft Bulletin." Trade it for "Hit to Death in the Future Head."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

i bought "waveform transmission" thinking it was "minimal nation".

haha oh shit I said to keep "Waveform Transmission" but I was thinking of "Internal Empire". Forget what I said -- nobody needs more than two Robert Hood albums because they all sound the same. And isn't WT vol II a Jeff Mills comp?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:11 (nineteen years ago)

Strangely enough, I bought that Christian Vogel album about a year ago and haven't listened to it yet. The vinyl is sitting somewhere in the bottom of my closet. Maybe this is my wake up call to finally listen to it.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

this is not a yard sale.

...$2.50?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

wt2 is rob "the vision" hood. vols 1 + 3 are by "the punisher", yes.

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

eric b + rakim - follow the leader

The first three songs are brilliant!

Dr. Rodney's Original Savannah Band (R. J. Greene), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

roy montgomery rewards repeated listening. allegory of hearing isn't on par with scenes from the south island or temple iv or the singles comp, but it's still a keeper.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

v/a - comin from the d: ghettotech installment

I just bought this for $0.01 on Amazon. There are a bunch left too. Looks interesting.

I have the Joy Division, Slint, 23 Skidoo, Neil Landstrumm 'She Took A Bullet' and Liars, and like them all. I have the Cristian Vogel 'Rescate', Missy Elliott, Clouddead, A Minor Forest and Glenn Branca as well, and could probably live happily without any of them

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

themselves - the no music

this might be the only album I can think of where I like the remix album (The No Music of Aiff's) much more than the original. "Poison Pit" is all-time favorite.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

That Roy Montgomery CD is sat in a box under my desk right now, I've never quite understood the appeal of what he does. If anyone wants it, send me a quid through Paypal for the postage and it's all yours.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

the only one of those which fills me with enthusiasm is this is not a test which is obv missy's weakest album - however 'let me fix my weave' is properly banging off it, and some of the slow james are quite luscious.

that's the one ellen allien album i've not heard!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

slow jams

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

Actually in some sort of order for once (I must have been at those decisiveness pills again):

joy division - unknown pleasures
flaming lips - soft bulletin
liars - they threw us all in a trench
23 skiddoo - seven songs
slint - spiderland
japan - tin drum
eric b + rakim - follow the leader
roots manuva - brand new second hand

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give you $20 for 23 Skidoo - Seven Songs.

£6.99 in Sister Ray.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

What is it you don't like about the Ken Ishii album Vahid? It's no 'Jelly Tones' admittedly, but it's still worth having around.

'Stadtkind' is also worth keeping just for 'Licht'. The point where the strings first fade in kills me every time. I'm a sucker for cheap tricks.

jng (jng), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

I used to own Seven Songs on LP, but it was stolen by a housemate who smoked a lot of crack, but apparently not as much crack as he wanted to smoke. So it went to pay for 1/10th of a crack rock.

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

as a resident jazzophile, I tried to come up with situations/moods for which you might need to keep "survivor's suite" but for the life of me and as much as I like Keith Jarrett, I can't think of one. AMG gives it five-stars, but I've never felt I had to listen to it after the first couple of times.

I'd keep the DJ Shadow pieces for nostalgic value. In 20 years, if the format survives (or you transfer these to the then-current format) you can explain all of the "product placement" references to the young'uns.

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Friday, 26 May 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

"as a resident jazzophile...."

I thought it had been decided that the correct technical term was a jazz douchebag?

-- jng

ditto!! Fenstermusik isn't far behind either... and for "Shorty" that odd little thing with the minimal (really) off-beat beats on top and the enormous clanging sub-bass wobble underneath (no wonder Ellen likes Dubstep). And "Salzee" with that fantastic bass drop. and the Barbara Morgenstern-goes-industrial of the title track.

Most of "brand new second hand" is so bleurgh it really is worth swapping the whole thing for a 12" of Witness (One Hope).

neil landstrumm - brown by august

I thought that was the canon choice for some reason.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Gag at this if you will, but Unknown Pleasures works very well at low volume during a nice dinner party.

i grabbed roy montgomery off hearing his work on "harmony of the spheres". of course, i was much dissapointed by "allegory of healing" because it doesn't sound anything like that. ditto vibracathedral orchestra, i was expected something that sounded like sunroof and instead i got something that sounded like hawkwind being played by woookies.

Thinking of this, you keep repeating you miss
The rhymes from the microphone soloist
And you sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon
As you hear it, pump up the volume
Dance wit the speaker 'till you hear it blow,
Then plug in the headphone 'cause here it go
It's a 4 letter word when it's heard, it control
your body to dance (You got it) soul,
Ditects the tempo like a red alert
Reaches your reflex, so let it work
When this is playing, you can't get stuck wit
The steps, so get set and I'm a still come up wit
A gift to be swift, follow the leader, the rhyme will go
Def wit the record that was mixed a long time ago

Although there is an interesting question here: imagine the situation where you love an album, listen to it to death, absorb it, then move on a yr or so later. Asides from pure nostalgia, (and given that you are completely "over" it) why not pass it on to someone else? Even if you think its a great piece of work?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

ouch!

not sure why it bugs so much ... it's like they could be GREAT albums if they just pumped up / down the drum production strategically. like "the test" is ruined by the wack old school breakbeats running under the whole thing (circa 91 hardkiss style) ... meanwhile the dancier tracks like "hey boy hey girl" and whatnot are ruined by being bassline-led instead of beat-led. did they decide that "doesn't matter" was their WORST TRACK EVER and they'd never go down that road again??

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Here's an idea: don't throw anything out, instead, make a bunch of "mystery CD packs" of five CDs each and mail them out to ILXors. Don't worry about who already owns what, just pick five CDs at random and keep mailing them out until you run out. It's kind of like the $25 Mystery Boxes that I used to buy sometimes from this record store in Toronto (now out of business). They'd clear out inventory by putting ten records in a cardboard box and selling them for $25. You'd buy a House Box, Techno Box, Trance Box, whatever, and wouldn't have any idea what you were buying but that was part of the fun. Even when two or three of the records were good but the rest were shit, you were still getting three good records for $25 so it was still worth it.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, but here's the deal: because i've got like 2 or 3 thousand CDs, i take them out of their jewel cases and put them in plastic sleeves. fitting them in the sleeves usually involves folding up the artwork. also it tends to scratch the discs up a bit. so they're not presentable enough that i'd feel OK taking $$$ for them. and doing it for free = TOO MUCH WORK.

Unknown Pleasures is the aural equivalent of sticking snow down your pants and trying to hang yourself in an igloo with a four-foot ceiling.

They Threw Us All in a Trench is the aural equivalent of sticking snow down your pants and trying to dance in snowshoes inside an igloo with a four-foot ceiling.
