90% baseball crap, 10% rock.

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Thats what the blog is yes, I was just pushing the interview not the blog. I have a baseball readership and some music interests. I am trying to expand the music coverage. Next week I have an interview with Envelopes (also Swedish) and I do a few other album reviews.

Baseball is highly overrated.

Steev (Steev), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

well, some people "like" baseball...some dont....I have hobbies - music, baseball, etc...The point was to push a really good band, if you dont like the baseball...dont read the baseball lol.

I suspect, and I might be crazy here, that it appeals to differnt people different ways....Love is All is what the thread was about....Yikes :)

I like the album quite a bit, but have a hard time believing they've only heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a couple of times...

hank (hank s), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, I mean I dont think its very YeahX3 derivitive....I really do hear a ton more Ska/2Tone influence. Definately X-Ray Specs.

wait, let me get this straight, there is already a band named after a song by the Rapture?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Joshua, when people say a band is "like" another band, they do not necessarily mean that they were influenced by that band, or even aware of them. There is a significant difference there.

The thing Love Is All most remind me of remains the first, self-titled Psychedelic Furs album, in about a million ways.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Nabisco, its true they could be "like" another band accidentally...I suspect that is a possibility. However, I suspect most people think that they are intentionally derivitive. I also think people hear "Girl singer - punkish genre - Yeah Yeah Yeah's." I think its not that easy.

I remember that Furs album well...Thats the one with "India" on it right? I think the sax on both is similar - very smoky if I recall correctly. Still going with X-Ray Specs but do love the Furs.

You're 38???

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, it's not "a possibility," it's how comparisons and similes have been intended to work since time immemorial. Anyone who reads "is like" as "is intentionally derived from" doesn't entirely understand English, I don't think.

In any case, mentioning the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Love Is All reviews is one of those small ways that journalists acknowledge that they may have readers who are young and new to music, or not-young but not deep into music, and who may be helped along by a really broad reference to a currently popular band to get a decent idea what they're reading about. They can go on about X-Ray Spex or Life Without Buildings in a second, but they toss in the YYYs just to make sure the whole class can follow along.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: He's 38?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

That's what the blog sez.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I am 38...I am confused as to why that is suprising? Explain?

Nabisco, I did understand your point the first time and do actually speak and write in English (although maybe not as well as you would like). My point, and I suspect its a valid one (not sure I am going to pull out old style books) is that "like" can mean BOTH "intentionally derived from" and "similar to." You seem to think I only see it as "intentionally dervied from." Are we really having an argument about this? Why?

Bayond that I agree with everything you said. I think my point was that it is somewhat sad if people think YYYs because they hear girl punkish singer....You are certainly right that that might not be what people intend by the comparison.

I do actually agree with you,

Josh
