Or, put in another way, who out of the two made the most constantly bad movies?

Wtf, Purple Rain rules!

The album, yes.

there's a pretty funny joe queenan essay from the early 90s about how Prince was the only pop star who looked like he might someday make as many bad (depending on your def. of bad, all prince movies are a gas, yadda yadda) movies as Elvis, but sadly he only wound up making three. Elvis made many more.

judging solely on the musical/stage performances, prince might be the greatest actor of all-time. then it wasn't really acting, I know.

seventeen years pass...

I watched "Under The Cherry Moon" a few nights ago for the first time. I dont think its as bad as its detractors say, its silly fun and Prince's music, charisma and the old school 20s glamour look of the movie do enough. Maybe lacking a bit of a spark between Prince and Kristin Scott Thomas. Theres more sexual chemistry between Prince and Jerome Benton tbh. Its mad that this is her first movie, which she got a Razzie for too - unfairly I might add. There should be more music in this though. It seems like he was aiming for a proper movie than a musical.

Jim Hoberman was a fan - I can't find a link to his complete review, but an excerpt can be found here:

Someone shared a list of Sophia Coppola's top ten "The Greatest Films of All Time, as Selected for the Sight & Sound Magazine Poll"... it didn't seem like a very "fun" list to me (tho I'm no cineaste), but I was struck that "Purple Rain (Magnoli)" was listed (along with films by the likes of Kurosawa, Campion, and er, Francis Ford Coppola). One of the ten greatest of all time(?)

Elvis was hott and really not a bad actor.

I mean I love Prince, but the best thing about the movies is the music.

King Creole - the only decent Elvis movie?

It’s very weird that I’ve never seen Under the Cherry Moon

I haven't either, but I'm in no rush to - I don't think I can get through Purple Rain again unless I skipped to the musical numbers. His Batman videos are really entertaining - I kind of prefer them to the actual movie at this point.

Anyway, regardless of whether his movies are any good, I love the albums that came with all of them, even Graffiti Bridge. I can't say that about Elvis - side A of Loving You has some great stuff as does the soundtrack to King Creole, but except for a few singles, I have no interest in putting on his other soundtracks.
