The Voice I've Been Hearing Comes From THAT BODY?

I expected Stephin Merritt to look like Rupert Everett, not the shlemiel I see pictured.

Put this on new answers.

Curt, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought this was going to be another Kylie Mingoue thread.

I'm amazed by the voices coming out of Stephin Merritt, Peter Murphy and Iggy Pop - since they're as small-framed as they are. And then David Thomas eeks out that high-pitched warble.

Dave225, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rick "Never Gonna Give It Up, Always Gonna Bring You Down, Big Black Voice In the Body Of Howdy Doody" Astley

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, this is the uber-answer

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ah, but you haven't lived until you've seen him raised aloft
riding thru the moshpit on the shoulders of some young buck!

is this a secret talent of smallframed performers
- improved crowdsurfing possibilities?

oh and... don't forget Prince

i went to see songs:ohia a couple of months back. the roadie got up on stage to tune jason's guitar. but then he started playing it and singing. turns out the unassuming ball cap'n'jeans roadie-looking guy was who i was there to see. amazing.

I've heard (but have not witnessed) that it's very surprising to see John Darnielle's (of The Mountain Goats fame) voice come from his body, too. Very small and ineffectual man, but very loud voice. I cannot account for this seeing as I've never even gazed upon a photograph: just heard it from a couple of people.

Mandee, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember thinking the first time I saw the video for "Together Forever" that it was just a big joke (a la Elton John's "I Want Love" more recently). "Never Gonna Give You Up" dawned the shocking truth on me.

Vinnie, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How come nobody has mentioned Aaron Neville? Huge guy, looks very mean, that scar on the forehead, and the voice of an angel.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this question reminds me of that mockumentary "fear of a black hat" where the rap group N.W.H. [Niggaz With Hats] sings a song called "come pet the p.u.s.s.y" with a big black woman singing the hook - but in the video they use a little japanese girl and.. well.. its funny lookin'.

phil-two, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am scared when I heard some deep, loud, belt-it-out-from-your- belly woman voice and find out it's some 10 year old with feathered bangs, oversized t-shirt and spandex leggings, such as the Rimes girl when she was younger and that clip of a very young Starsearch era Britney on the 'Before They Were Famous' MuchMoreMusic show.

Evangeline, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's that famous one with Martha Wash singing the song, and in the video it's some slim young chick? Black Box or something? I think she sued them, but I can't remember the details of the story.

Sean, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was going to answer this, but there's no way I can top Rick Astley.

Dan Perry, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean's answer reminds me of the first time I saw the REAL Milli Vanilli. Eek.

Dan Perry, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some of those death-metal guys with the Cookie Monster-meets-The Exorcist voices are actually pretty scrawny.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ben from Gomez

Sean, you thinking of Technotronic?

Kim, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the lead singer of built to spill. he looks like my high school gym teacher.

geeta, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i meant Merritt riding on concertgoer shoulders, of course
the image of Rick Astley doing that cracks me up, tho
...

Martin dead on the money about Aaron Neville
if you went to see Neville Brothers and wondered about the thuggish,
tattoo'd, treetrunks-for-arms guy
it was a thing of wonder when he took his solo turn "Tell It Like It Is"
in that voice...

Paul, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ludacris

Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav REALLY looks like a gym teacher.

Keiko, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NICK HEYWARD

Poops Mcgee, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kim, Sean is actually correct. Martha Wash (of The Weathergirls) sang the vocals on most of the Black Box hits ("Everybody Everybody", "Strike It Up", "I Don't Know Anybody Else"), as well as a few by Snap! ("I Got The Power") and C+C Music Factory ("Gonna Make You Sweat") but was replaced in the videos by younger model types. She sued someone over it (I think C+C), but I don't remember the outcome of the case.

"Pump Up The Jam" is the only Technotronic video I can think of that didn't have Ya Kid K in it. I think this is because the band's management initially thought she wasn't attractive enough to market as a front person. When they made the round of TV appearances after "Pump Up The Jam" hit and the general public decided that she was cute, the band's management to use her as a front person rather than just a studio voice.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mystikal has such a baby face!

chaki, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For that matter, Jay-Z has always looked like a clean-cut nerd to me.

How about 16yo Alex Chilton growling out "The Letter"?

Curt, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Encyclopedia Dan! I thought I'd heard the suing story about that one. I've been deluded all these years.

Kim, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Black Box's biggest and first was 'Ride On Time' which I believe nicked its vocals from Loleatta Holloway, if I remember rightly.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it did. 'Love Sensation': "And all I wanna say is thank you baby / Cause you're right on time..."

michael, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the amusing thing about dance videos/TotP performances was people miming to sampled lyrics, especially when that stuttering effect was en vogue.

michael, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
Huh?

SSSpeddy, Sunday, 9 March 2003 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I never have, cannot now, and will never be able to comprehend
the contrast between Chilton in "The Letter" and _Third/Sister Lovers_.
