Pulp 2xCD remasters coming in August?! Come anticipate.

There had been some rumblings about a Different Class remaster a while back, particularly around the time of the Common People documentary, but then things went quiet. Well, now it looks like it might be happening after all. The blurb about Jarvis's solo album in this month's Uncut mentions a DC remaster coming this summer, and now www.spincds.com is listing a Different Class 2 CD deluxe edition, along with similar deluxe treatments for His 'n' Hers and This is Hardcore, for release August 7.

Not much info yet, but great news to be sure. I'm hoping that with these being double CDs there will more than just the appropriate, contemporaneous b-sides and we'll get to hear some wonderful unreleased tracks as well. (E.g., "Live On," "The Boss," "Watching Nicky," "We Can Dance Again," "Paula")

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Goldang, if this happened I would be happy as a clam. Here's hoping! Ain't no chance of them getting released here in the States, though, I'll bet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a Pulp b-sides thread? They did quite a few excellent ones that hopefully these remasters will include- "PTA" and "Ansaphone" spring to mind, as well as "Mile End" from the Trainspotting soundtrack, which would also be a worthy inclusion.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Do they need remastering and if so, why?

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

When the Jarvis solo album out?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

"When's", even.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a Pulp b-sides thread?

Not as yet, it seems.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Do they need remastering and if so, why?

-- JoB

I think it's just an excuse to tidy up the discography, add value, repackage and unnassociate from the second-hand/mid-price market 90% of the time nowadays.

RE-RECORDED "BABIES" MOVED TO SECOND DISC OF HIS'N'HERS ALONG WITH REST OF SISTERS EP PLEEEEEEASE

kit, Sunday, 28 May 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

this will be a good opportunity for me to replace my very very deteriorated PDO copy of his 'n' hers (hopefully intro too)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Sunday, 28 May 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, finally a chance to replace my scratched This Is Hardcore without feeling ripped off...especially since Hardcore had some amazing b-sides ("Tomorrow Never Lies," "We Are the Boyz," etc, etc).

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 29 May 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't even own a copy of Different Class at the moment so this is good news.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 29 May 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Goldang, if this happened I would be happy as a clam. Here's hoping! Ain't no chance of them getting released here in the States, though, I'll bet.

Thats your next vacation sorted out then.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

There is this theory of something called airmail.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Not as much fun.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Plus Ned won't fit in the envelope.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Haha.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds cool, but nostalgia is speeding up...it's only been a decade! Hopefully these are more "deluxe" editions than "remastered" ones.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Theres been lots of 10 year deluxe editions lately hasnt there?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Can't they just release the b-sides separately (ala Suede) so's we don't have to re-buy the original albums?...hate when they do this...

RE-RECORDED "BABIES" MOVED TO SECOND DISC OF HIS'N'HERS ALONG WITH REST OF SISTERS EP PLEEEEEEASE
-- kit (...), May 29th, 2006.

surely 'babies' is the same on EP and LP?

maybe the remastering process will involve going back in time and replacing ed buller with someone competent.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

surely 'babies' is the same on EP and LP?

aha but no! It's not on the LP, it was a bonus track on CD - and the EP hangs together thematically, so those songs are going to be better off together, and the LP running order restored (PLEEEEEEEASE etc)

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

These albums do NOT need remastering. This is such a fucking rip-off. Just do a b-sides collection, wtf?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

It's not on the LP, it was a bonus track on CD

NOT AT ALL PEDANTIC

re-recorded ??

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

the orig. version was a single in '92.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Different Class has already been a 2CD set. "Second Class" was the b-sides, remixes etc.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

The Sister's Ep version of "Babies" is not a re-recorded version. It's just remixed slightly, lowering the guitars in the mix in favor of the synths with the result sounding a little more slick and less clunky than the original single version.

I can understand the folks who would rather see b-sides and rarities set, but these expanded versions seem to be the way the game is played nowadays. And given that these are purportedly going to be 2 CDs there should be a lot more interesting material than on some other recent reissues, like say in the case of the Talking Heads remasters. The thought of the DC bonus disc, in particular, intrigues me. Remixes aside, there were very few non-album b-sides for the DC singles. ("P.T.A.," "Ansaphone," "Mile End," the acoustic tracks from the "Common People" pt 2., and "Disco 2000" 7" mix, are all I think.) Hopefully this will leave room for some unreleased tracks. Surely they must have at least demoed "We Can Dance Again" as a very polished live version with completed lyrics exists. Ah who am I kidding, they'll probably just pad it with some live stuff from Glasto.

But if I can just hear studio versions of "Live On" and "The Boss" (which I guess these would have to go, somewhat anachronistically, on the HnH bonus disc) I will be a happy man.

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the tracklisting for the existing double disc of Different Class/Second Class that I've got. It cost a bomb but it was worth it:

1 Mis-Shapes
2 Pencil Skirt
3 Common People
4 I Spy
5 Disco 2000
6 Live Bed Show
7 Something Changed
8 Sorted for E's and Wizz
9 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E
10 Underwear
11 Monday Morning
12 Bar Italia

13 P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association)
14 Common People [Motiv 8 Club Mix]
15 Mile End
16 Ansaphone
17 Live Bed Show [Extended]
18 Your Sister's Clothes
19 Seconds
20 Deep Fried in Kelvin
21 The Babysitter"
22 Street Lites"
23 Common People '96

everything, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

No one, of course, would deny that Second Class contains a wealth of wonderful material, but it's a frustrating in its incompleteness. For example, it includes "Seconds" and "Your Sister's Clothes" from the Sisters Ep but not "His 'n' Hers," and "Deep Fried in Kelvin" from the "Lipgloss" single, but not "You're a Nightmare." (Happily, it includes all of the excellent "Do You Remember the First Time" b-sides.) Dumping the somewhat pointless "Common People" (just the radio edit) and the pleasant but unnecessary "Common People" remix, would have made room for these tracks, and made the disc a much better purchase. As is, however, you're still left with having to hunt down the singles, and just for one track at that.

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Common People '96

what's this?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 1 June 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

You lost me... which 'one track' ?

xpost Common People '96 was a single in france. Basically, exactly the same as the single edit, but the 'and screw' line becomes 'and ....'. That's it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 June 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, how come I can pick a day-old thread, post to it and get a xpost? Whey....

Anyhow, if your Second Class cd has "Common People 96" on it, it's a better one than mine, as mine stops at Street Lites.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 June 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

thing is the best thing invariably about these reissues is the packaging. i'd like to see a 'deluxe' re-packaging of the DIFFERENT CLASS cd more deluxe than the original cd issue and it's attendant 12 sleeves.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 1 June 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

I believe it's only the Japanese version of Second Class that includes "Common People 96." The Japanese version is also different in that it appends "PTA" and the motiv 8 mix of "Common People" to the album proper on the first disc.

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

appending PTA to the original album would have been a very good idea in the first place.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 1 June 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Common People 96 is also considerably shorter than the regular album version. It skips a whole section in the later part of the song, eliminating all the good bits: "a dog lying in the corner....everybody hates a tourist....chip stains....etc"

It's extremely dispensible.

Okay, now I'm really excited- bring on the demos and rarities! Thanks for the link, Mark.

This might give an idea of what might be:
http://www.pulppeople.plus.com/Discography/demos.htm

Apparently, from the Hardcore sessions, "Street Operator" and "Modern Marriage" are good. Confirms that "WE Can Dance Again" was demo-ed.

I really hope these get released in the States, although I'm not going to hold my breath. I'd love to have all of these b-sides.

I own all of it but *Previously unavailable.

7. You're a Nightmare (BBC John Peel Session)*
8. Live On (BBC Mark Goodier Session)*
9. Space (BBC Hit The North Session soundcheck)*

Previously unavailable? Pshaw. Get one MP3 search though nice for completism and presumably better sound quality. I prefer the version of "You're A Nightmare" that actually made the single to the JP version, but the JP version is very good too.

That's not the best of the various live "Live On" vrersions, but nice to have it on CD. Hopefully the "The Boss" demos will be, um, audible, rather than the tinny things we've had to make do with for years.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 9 July 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

'Catcliffe Shakedown' is a treat.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 9 July 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

if it distresses you so much just throw away the new version of the original album and keep the bonus stuff

EXACTLY! i don't get all this "rip-off" talk. i'd pay full whack for each of the three bonus cds anyway, and my original cd copies of the albums are, in chronological order, cracked (though miraculously still playable) thanks to a misplaced candle in my dorm room, fucked due to years of overplaying, leaving at parties, beer-mat subsitution etc, and, er, actually i've got about 6 copies of TIH for various reasons, but that never stopped me with the Cure reduxes and it ain't gonna stop me now.

Honestly, every time I read through the above track listings i go all tingly. and my copies arrive tomorrow! will report in full, if anyone's keen.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 9 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

and my copies arrive tomorrow!

*chokes* Well, see, now I hate you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 July 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. Just wow. The bonus discs are pretty much perfect! Impatiently waiting you report, Charlie.

And although it would have been nice to get an unheard demo version of "Live On" (surely there must be one), I do think the Goodier session is the best of versions floating around out there.

You are now our best friend. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

Heya Scotty! How does the demo version compare to the Goodier session?

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

The demo version to be quite honest with you is not good - the song does not have the impact in the studio as it did when played live or on the session.

Its quite dull and bland to be frank - I can see why they decided to bin the track. Shame really as so much potential was there.

And whomever knocked Ed Buller on here before, he did an AMAZING job remixing the OU demo, it sounded like it was performed live, the stylophone playing a key part to the track, but Ed saved this, and released a decent mix of it in the form of the single and Intro album

Scott Frazer (scottfrazer), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

Live On was meant to have been "the next big thing" at the time of its performances (if you listen to the quality of the M G session, paris la cigelle gig 1991, and other live shows around the time) the crowds were really into the song in a big way al la Sunrise style.

But onto tape it goes, and its another lost classic.

Tell you what tho, im personally excited about hearing clean versions of the boss and watching nicky - these two are amazing tracks as they are on the demos i have, but to hear it cd quality straight from the master.........oooooooooooh yeah!

(if you dont know me, im a big big big big pulp fan, bootleg collector and demo hoarder!!! lol)

Scott Frazer (scottfrazer), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

I see "His'n'Hers" everywhere, "Different Class" nowhere. Weird.

Not going to buy any of them anyway, btw. Already own the CDs and I think remastering mid 90s albums is rather pointless.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

as I said upthread, I don't it's rarely ever (even for older stuff) much more than a convenient hook to hang "added value" onto, getting people to 1) remember their existence and 2) pay full-price for, perhaps again.

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Some older stuff really benefits from the remastering though. There were a lot of lousily mastered CDs back in the CD's 80s childhood.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, you do know that there's a slew of completely wonderful previously unreleased material on the second disc of each, right? I don't think anyone's buying these for remastered sound.

David Bachyrycz (David Bachyrycz), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

He does have a point though.

My guess: Fopp (or whoever) will have the original albums for £5, and these 'deluxe' editions for £15, so it's lots of cheaply recorded tracks for £10.

A nice testimonial payout for the other Pulp guys, but there it is.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

It's £13 at all the usual online stores.

Okay so I should be getting my copies any day now -- friend snagged them for me when she was over there visiting -- and I found the Ultimate Live DVD used last weekend. And now there's this!

This is a double CD of the best of the recordings Pulp made for John Peel. Disc One contains their complete studio sessions, including their first ever and much sought after 1981 session. Disc Two contains the best of their In Concert recordings, including the complete concert recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall to celebrate 40 years of broadcasting by John.

Contains sleeve notes by Jarvis.

Release date is end of this month.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 October 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

... and what's the verdict? extra trax worth the repurchase?

winter testing (winter testing), Friday, 13 October 2006 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

For "HnH" and "Hardcore" - unquestionably. "Different Class", rather less so. They're interesting, but you can clearly hear why all those demos didn't make the cut.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 13 October 2006 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

Is Nick Cave's "pub" version of "Disco 2000" any different to the one on the "Bad Cover Version" single?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 13 October 2006 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. It's bloody awful, too.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 13 October 2006 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

In listening to these again -- it'll help Friday at work go by *really* quickly! -- I'm remembering just how wonderful Candida's keyboards were the whole time. Just amazing how well they expanded the band's sound track for track.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

No "Help the Aged (feat. Ali G)", no credibility.
