It's very good, at least the first disc. It's very chilly and stark though, like they've been listening to Immer and wanted to try for the same effect with minimal techno (issue being that minimal techno is already colder than microhouse...). I'm reminded of a cave filled with stalactites at times.

The second disc is more of a pick'n'mix affair with lots of hyper abstract and kinda forbidding repetitive grooves, found sound, stiff electro pop etc. Verging on misanthropic, like a Back To Mine curated by Heathcliff. I've not really listened to it enough to make a judgment, though it' s nice as always to hear Position Normal though.

who is Matthew Styles? A London DJ?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 29 May 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

He's the other guy who runs Crosstown Rebels along with Damian Lazarus.

Disc one is really really great, after a few listens. At first it sounds just plain cold and dull, but by 2/3 of the way through you realize you're rocking with it. Perhaps out of sheer repetition (repetitive beats and all that). I really like the Rob Mello "Give Me" track - is it well-known?

Yeah that sounds right . After the ace micro-goth opener i was initially somewhat bewildered by how arctic and furrowbrowed it is, but after a while it really starts to open up - the Someone Else remix of Butane is fantastic, and so is that last track by Ra-X. And how great is Rob Mello. I wonder if maybe this is him crossing over from MFF/Classic crowd to the minimal crowd.

Second disc I'm a bit cooler on, despite the presence of Position Normal.

x-post. heh
That Position Normal track had me floored (had never heard it before) but yeah, as a whole mix, disc two is a bit annoying. That Monolake track ("Plumbicon") is also right up my alley. I have a thing for 4/4 tracks that go from a standard house beat and then more heavily emphasize the kicks between the snares, creating a hyno-style thing (OK, that was badly described, but someone might know what I mean).

from trickski to abe duque sounds like a nice sequence.

anyway this is more like matt styles crossing over to the electrohouse (kompakt / blackstrobe / audion) crowd. i want this!

Okay Vahid, but i'm warning you, it sounds like the absolute opposite of See You @ The Party. It's kind of grist for blunt's "minimal = nu-IDM" mill.

Anyway if Matt Styles co-runs Crosstown Rebels hasn't he already crossed over?
