And buy albums I mostly mean CDs or perhaps very cheap vinyl.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, if this has been covered then forgive me and cover it again since I haven't been able to get the search function working all day.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

And the first post should read "and BY albums," obviously.

So uh...scott?

There was a thread like 2 weeks ago where someone had asked "where should I go in Philly/NYC this weekend?" or something

It depends what you're looking for.
Try AKA Music by 2nd & Market for CDs and some vinyl,
and Booktraders (sort of) next to AKA has tons of classical vinyl for $1-$3

Phila. Record Exchange near (6th? 7th?) & South has tons of vinyl in many genres

Repo Records and Spaceboy Music on South St. are both wonderful for the latest in hot shit.

Meehan Ah Um (Meehan Ah Um), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

I find Spaceboy and Repo to be lacking, unless you're mainly looking for indie rock.

However, I prefer Spaceboy over Repo.

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

I used to walk to Repo every Saturday when it was still in North Wayne. I am old.

I just started doing some temp work at U Penn and found a place on 40th and Locust called Marvelous. They have a lot of stuff, though i haven't really sarched the bins, only newer records.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

i'm the one who went to philly/nyc the other week. i found both spaceboy and philly record exchange to be quite good - spaceboy more for used CDs, and record exchange better for vinyl. didn't look through that throughly, though.

two months pass...
bye bye, spaceboy...

Fellow music fans:

After about a decade of life on Philadelphia's South Street, Spaceboy Music has decided to retire and close its doors late-September. We will miss the excitement when bands like Notwist, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Belle and Sebastian, Espers, RJD2, Sunn)), Jack Rose and Radiohead were new and we could bring them to you. We were always excited to share what we liked with you and were even more excited when you showed us something new.

The world is different. The music industry has changed, technology has changed, South Street has changed. For Spaceboy Music, its time for a change.

Prior to the doors closing, we will be selling the contents of the store with a huge sale starting Saturday 8/26. Everything is for sale. - except Max - although all offers will be considered.

Philadelphia has an amazing collection of independent record stores and we will miss being a part of that community and we will miss you. Please stop in and say goodbye.

As always, thanks for choosing an independent retailer.

aww, that's sad. i liked spaceboy. i thought they were a fine addition. and i got the feeling that they woke people up a little bit on south street vinyl-wise. anyplace that sells good new vinyl is okay in my book.

RE: Spaceboy Closing

Letter should have read: 'People downloading all this shit now, and our store is crawling with dumb yuppies and shitheads from South Jersey'

Philly is veritable ghost town for records, in my opinion. But if I were to go shopping, Philadelphia Record Exchange and AKA have the most variety and bang for the buck. Most everywhere else sucks. Also check this thread out:

Maria, was AKA the place you took me to? I don't think I'd ever go back there again unless I had $200 and 4 hours to spare.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 26 August 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

!!??!?!!!? WHAT?!? What the hell!!!! Spaceboy was totally my favorite store in Philly. I remember buying Le Tigre's s/t there in 2001, which, in turn, singlehandedly paved the way for my current taste in music. I can't believe they're closing. It totally should have been Repo.

if it's any consolation, the original Repo in Bryn Mawr closed recently, which is a little sad, even though the stores are complete shit now. when i was in high school i used to run from track meets held at haverford just to browse the used bins before running back to the meet.

Is Plastic Fantastic (outside Philadelphia) still open? The fact that I haven't heard that name mentioned for a while leads me to think it's defunct.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 26 August 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, plastic fantastic shut down a while ago.

You can always go hang out with The Count. If you dare.......

i would ONLY trade records in philly with my friend bob at his store in the italian market. i would never trade at the record exhange or anywhere else, even though i liked those guys and they were pals of mine. occasionally i would trade psych records with my friend dan, but that was it. my brother told me that dan recently moved and the members of espers helped him in exchange for records. his collection is the holy grail to me. godhead, i tell ya.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 August 2006 03:09 (nineteen years ago)

that's sad about spaceboy. I'll have to go there early this week before it is picked clean.

philly record exchange, tequila sunrise.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Sunday, 27 August 2006 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

Well, now that Spaceboy is going to be kaput, where else am I going to be able to get my CDs in pickle bags?

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Sunday, 27 August 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

shitheads from South Jersey'

yeah, the philly shitheads are more than sufficient.

kind of sad spaceboy's closing but they had a shitty used section and never managed to have the cd i wanted. "we just sold our last copy yesterday" and all that. but i did stock up on ethiopiques there.

GOD PUNCH TO NJ DON'T NEED YA (yournullfame), Sunday, 27 August 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

haha ok so THAT'S why the guy at spaceboy said "we're not getting it" when I asked if they had the new Mountain Goats.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 27 August 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

good lord this thread revival has depressed the hell out of me

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 27 August 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

if it's any consolation, the original Repo in Bryn Mawr closed recently

especially this!!!

where has it gone, my youth

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 27 August 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

where has it gone, my youth

yeah, that bryn mawr repo thing was like a punch in the gut, even though i stopped by about 6 months ago just to check and see what was there and they had nothing in the store. actually, it was one of the owner's friends stocking crap used vinyl while listening to dave matthews. loudly.

i remember buying a codeine cd there in like and my dad commenting "wow, that's positive." they had such great [read: annoying, shrill] commercials on 'DRE.

turns out that proximity to villanova/st. joe's will probably kill your boutique record store. ditto for proximity for whole foods, starbucks.

but yeah, lol otm to the "we just sold out of [insert shit hot indie cd of the week here]" and then never restocking anything [what separated spaceboy from aka was that at least they stocked (insert title) once.] but i thought that was part of their charm. the guys were always nice. obligatory spaceboy RIP.

blackmail (blackmail.is.my.life), Sunday, 27 August 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, total RIP for spaceboy, though i'm not surprised considering they had to move from the high foot traffic location of zipperhead to that smaller space on south street. and i think one of the owners left the business?

spaceboy did a great job of stocking local releases -- highly likely that it was the only shop in town that made it a priority.
