Please Help Julian PriesterOrganizer: Anton Schwartz
Beneficiary: Julian Priester
Share on facebookShare on twitterShare on google_plusone_shareShare on pinterest_shareShare on emailMany of you know Julian Priester......if not personally, then as one of jazz's living treasures. He's performed and recorded with the likes of Duke Ellington, Max Roach, Dinah Washington, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra... and has been a key member of the Seattle jazz community for the past 35 years.
Prof. Priester recently retired from his longtime faculty position at Cornish College of the Arts, and was hit with a "perfect storm" of events. He sufferred serious kidney troubles, incurring expenses and forcing him to stay near Seattle - both for treatment and to be available for a transplant should the opportunity suddenly arise. That prevents him from touring which, for lack of a pension, is his main source of income. He and his wife have already had to give up their home and put most of their posessions into storage. Even so, it has been a struggle to keep up with the costs of storage, and they cannot reclaim their belongings until the mounting fees are paid off. Soon their things will be auctioned off - not only practical posessions but a lifetime of artwork, music and family history.
Prof. Preister and his wife are wonderful people, and it does not come naturally to them to talk about their personal issues, much less ask for financial help. But they do need our help. They have been working hard to line up a good long-term home for themselves and their belongings, and to delay the confiscation of their posessions until they have the money to pay their storage bills and reclaim them.
Anything you can contribute now will be of immediate help. We hope to raise enough money to reclaim all their belongings and help with their medical costs, at least until they are able to get back on their feet.
Julian Priester has given so much to the jazz community for decades, through his music and his teaching. Let's come together to help him through this time of need.

Good news, but I don't understand how he could have had a "longtime faculty position" as a professor, and still not get pension?

Love, Love was just recently reissued on CD by ECM.
A lush futuristic mid 70s drean to visit into on a rainy August morning.

just scored a clean copy of "Love, Love" for $12 (amazing record) and have been looking into his catalogue.
of his first two records (on Riverside), i once had "Keep Swingin'" but didn't hang onto it for some reason. "Spiritsville" has Sam Jones (!) though, so i'm eager to check that out. dude at the record store said the other ECM record ("Polarization" -- cool cover) wasn't anything special, but curious whether anyone has thoughts. i will be checking it out soon.
he's on two Booker Little records ("Out There" and "Booker Little and Friend"); and then he's also in Max Roach's band with Booker and then into the Turrentine brothers era (they made two piano-less quintet records, "Quiet as It's Kept" and "Parisian Sketches", in 59/60) and then he's also on "Percussion Bitter Sweet" with Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron, and Clifford Jordan (!!!)
a few records i like without realizing or remembering he was on them: Freddie Hubbard's "Hub Cap", Duke Ellington's "New Orleans Suite", "Clifford Jordan in the World", Eddie Henderson's "Sunburst", Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships"
obviously he's on the Mwandishi records -- nuff said. and a bunch of Sun Ra records (which is where i first encountered him).
and then he plays on these, which caught my eye:
Sam Rivers, Dimensions & Extensions (Blue Note, 1967)Billy Harper, Capra Black (Strata-East, 1973)Bobbi Humphrey, Fancy Dancer (Blue Note, 1975)
