who are music critics?

Who here at ILM is a music critic? and what are some examples (links to websites) of things you've reviewed? I'm just curious.

A Nairn, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I used to do some reviews for Kindamuzik.net until my writings on music started to become too loose and self-indulgent to be called reviews. Don't ask me if that's a good thing...

Arien, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I run Logged Off (www.loggedoff.net) and also write for DOA (www.adequacy.net)

Queen G, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Music critics are the ones who care! Who are music critics? Music critics are the ones who are always there!

My Pal Foot Foot, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Arien & Queen G are parents?

Dave225, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Far too many entries at the AMG to count, but of course my fave pieces are for FT. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I run a website at http://www.o-h-j.com and write for http://electronicmusicreviews.com and http://www.popmatters.com.

Ned, I liked your fall reviews, I was reading them last night at 1 am listening to Grotesque.

Todd Burns, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also review records for allmusic.com, but it seems to be less and less all the time as I get busier and allmusic.com gets an even wider group of reviewers onboard. I once thought that maybe I'd be reviewing stuff regularly for my own site, globalhermit.com, but if you actually go there you'll realize that the only pieces currently up there are about a year old already and almost everything else is under construction. I need a patron, if I want to do that site up the way I wish I could, but sadly I have to spend most of my time on the regular job (computer hardware reviewer...weird combo?). Oh well.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Resident indie boy at SCAN newspaper. Last review published would have been my chewing out of excreable Epitaph punk act 1028, or 1208, or something.

Judd Nelson, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I cover jazz and "new music"-type stuff for Dusted (www.dustedmag.com). It's a new site.

charlie va, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, I liked your fall reviews

Hey, thanks. Just a little something to pass the time.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave, I was gonna do that! You bounder, you.

matthew m., Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I write about music at www.freakytrigger.co.uk. I don't usually write reviews there - if I find I've written something about one particular record I sometimes call it a review.

Tom, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

e.g.

also if you google my name and pixies you find my nme review of surfer rosa, which has some good sentences and some TERRIBLE ones blimey

mark s, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ha ha! i just found the surfer rosa review. and i can't really find any terrible sentences in it. it compresses more interesting thoughts into fewer words than most reviews i've ever read. also under that (great) review, at the bottom of the page i found w. google, is q's review of surfer rosa, which was just artless and abysmal.

me, i write reviews of textbooks, mostly.

geeta, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I write for Pitchfork (as Richard-San, though that should change at some point soon) and the Allmusic Guide.

Mark, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark R-S is changing his name? It better not become Ron LeFloor! Stick with the Rustys: Staub or Kuntz. (Rooosty!)

Andy K, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CURSE YOU, SINKER. Now every time I sit down to enjoy me some Pixies, these two words will undoubtedly float into my head: "rockist tittilation". DAMMIT!

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, my REAL answer:

I write for myself (@ my website) and with other folks currently on hiatus (@ the Car). I also write for Fakejazz.com - searching for my name will get you the goods. I also post on the uber-wonderful NYLPM (you know where THAT is). I also have a review on the ever-popular *ahem* Pitchfork web presence, which I shall link to directly because I can - HERE. Of course, Tom & Ned have been nice enough to post some ramblings o' mine at the Freaky Trigger HQ, too, and I have approximately 52 more FT-geared babblings waiting to be written. And that's enough of that.

I also do Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, the occasional circumcision, and even a bris here & there (if the pay's good).

Daver, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um. (Cough.) I guess I've done that sometimes. But it was just for the money, just because I _really_ needed it, you know. Just once or twice.

(Cough.)

Douglas, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm one of the prog rock critics at Ground & Sky: www.progreviews.com

Joe, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have written for PopCulturePress (until they found out I am crap hahahahaha). I still write for Kindamuzik (just like Omar does). But most of all I ramble on my weblog. I am my own editor and I accept everything! ;-) Links? Christ, no. I wanna uphold the image you have of me which is no doubt much better than the real thing. Oh yeah, I also write for Subjectivisten (like Omar and Arien).

nathalie, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Ground & Sky ever updated, I could also say to "write" for them instead of to "have written" for them. Joe secretly says the same thing. I also write for Pitchfork, and probably should append a "San" to my name.

dleone, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm what I think is called a contributing editor at OOR Magazine, a bimonthly music magazine in the Netherlands. I write interviews / articles / album reviews / 12" reviews. New issue out this Thursday for a mere 3,65 euro.

JoB, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel pretty certain that if you added everything that everyone in this thread has written it would equal about half of Douglas' output. Is there a magazine out this month without a piece from you Doug?

Yeah. I write about music. I have a day job writing about modern rock bands (like Linkin Park, Kid Rock & Limp Bizkit -- fuck yeah!) for a radio behemoth (everyone knows which one I'm talking about). And I do freelance stuff for Chunklet, Flakmag.com, Neumu.net, soon TheMorningNews.org, etc., etc. I briefly wrote for the AMG and Pitchfork. All of it is shit.

Yancey, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New issue out this Thursday for a mere 3,65 euro.
And that's still 3.65 Euros too much. Just kidding. ;-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have been asked to write for The Metro Times (local Detroit paper) in ages past, another such paper which circulated around Grand Rapids MI. USA in what is also ages gone by, and more recently I have been approached by someone from AMG and OHJ. The closest I have ever come to having anything I wrote published was when someone clipped what I had siad on IDM and used it in a new release catalog. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spam galore finally !

I coördinate BEATS @ KindaMuzik, the electronic music part of KindaMuzik and sometimes even write for it :)

Johan, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a radio behemoth (everyone knows which one I'm talking about)

I'm not everyone, it seems...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, i write for a candian mag called "Exclaim" (originally called "! *@#" until it became to tiresome to explain). good mag, actually. online at: www.exclaim.ca

i've also written for a couple of local papers here in toronto, and also for the calgary straight...

rob, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oho! Even more Torontonians! (That reminds me...is Grim Kim still posting?)

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nine years pass...

I am pissed off that this article doesn't feature either Madame Guillotine single 'Fuck You John Doran' or 'Stick This Up Your Arse John Doran You Sarcastic Creep'.

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

"single"

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)
