Freeway's group Ice City's album had a great track called "Ride Up" with Joe Budden that was built on an awesome loop from "The Royal Scam."

Wasn't the beginning of Rikki Don't Lose That Number a jazz sample?

this classic album's series DVD is going to be re-released in a month or so. it's mindblowing. if any group deserves an in-the-studio explication of how an album was produced, it's the dan. plus, you know fagen and becker are getting kicks out of it: watching them underhandedly dis one studio hack's take on the "peg" intro is hilarious. I think Becker says something (after the sample is played) to the effect of "Yeah, pretty much speaks for itself." great dvd.

Actually, as I recall, the Dan sued the rappers for not giving them credit on the song & then Tariq & Gunz went on TRL calling out Fagan & Becker, telling them to come to the studio to prove that they respected hip hop.

Being read in the wrong direction: "Daydreamin" is part of the list using the "Black Cow" sample; "Home at Last" goes with the song beneath it in that list, Big Shug’s "Stripped and Pistol Whipped."
And I think I read in a Steely Dan bio some years ago, in a quote from either Fagen or Becker, that Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz ended up not making any money off "Uptown Baby" because of the sample.

Having said that, I've been completely sleeping on checking out Tatyana's album, especially considering that she's basically tailor-made for me to like (attractive black female pop r&b singer with a Harvard degree? MORE PLZ). Reading this thread just reminded me that I need to wake the fuck up.

That album sucked but Lord Tariq was dope in The Bounce Squad and Money Boss Players.

Kanye West wrote a letter to get permission for your song. Can you go into that?Fagen: “What happened is from time to time we get requests for license for hip-hoppers to use part of an old song. We got a clip of something from Kanye West wanted to use a piece of ‘Kid Charlemagne.’ We usually say yes, but we didn’t like the general curve of the way that one sounded. ... But then he sent us a handwritten letter that was so heartfelt we finally gave in and acceded to his request.Becker: “He basically said this was a song (‘Champion’) that meant a lot to him. It was written about his father.”Fagen: “I didn’t get that at all from the music.”Becker: “I’ve had occasion to wonder since then whether that’s the same Kanye West.”Fagen: “Maybe it was a prank.”

Really interesting thread. The "Kid Charlemagne" bit always made "Champion" for me.
Also: hip-hoppers

Limited to what's on Spotify, obviously, so no De La Soul. Also I pretty much only used songs where the sample was used prominently. Tone Loc's "Cutting Rhythms" samples "Black Cow" at one point, but it's not the primary sample in the song.

Ha, GYA, didn't know you were in LL! Of course you are. (And ... whoa, you are doing very well for yourself there.)
Wonder if there are any other ILXors in LL -- besides you and me, I know of two: 1) n/a and 2) James Redd and the Blecchs. Also former ILXor the Good Dr. Bill.
