Trinity's "3 Piece Suit" inspired the answer song, "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea and Donna.

Althea and Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking" is mentioned in The Psychedelic Furs' "We Love You".

The Psychedelic Furs' "We Love You" shares a title with a 1967 single released by the Rolling Stones allegedly as a thank you message to fans who had supported Mick, Keith and Brian during their incarceration for drug possession.

The Rolling Stones are mentioned, along with Elvis and the Beatles, in "1977" by The Clash.

fritz, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pass it on.

fritz, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the next one is easy - any reference to Elvis, The Beatles, 1977, or the Clash. keep it going...

fritz, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'77 was the first record by Talking Heads. Jerry Harrison was one of the band members. He was also in the Modern Lovers.

continue...

Dave225, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Modern Lovers had a song called "She Cracked," and "Cracked" is a really puerile humor magazine . . . oh wait, that's wrong, innit?

Okay, uh, the drummer from the Modern Lovers eventually joined The Cars, who had a nice MOR hit with a song called "Drive."

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Cars" was Gary Numan's biggest hit in the United States.

fritz, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And it drives me crazy! Like no one else! *slinks away gibbering*

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"United States Live" by Laurie Anderson was released in 1984.

vantasma, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(this looks suspiciously like Only Connect IV...) The 1984 soundtrack was performed by the Eurythmics, featuring Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

are, on tracers note, the fine young cannibals covered "ever fallen in love" by the buzzcocks.

di, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuX0rin simultanweous posts!

di, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Annie Lennox has a buzz haircut, so there you go. She sang "I Need You", the only S&M fantasy performed solo on acoustic guitar BESIDES...

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Annie Lennox once dressed as Elvis Presley at a grammy awards performance . . .

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(ha, you could have got straight back to Trinity from the Clash via Lee Perry then Joe Gibbs... or wasn't that the idea? this has turned into another connections thread, not 6 degrees of separation)

michael, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why doesn't someone mention 2 diff/t things and we all have a crack at connecting them? of course the game ends rather quickly.

(p.s. i'm rather disappointed that there are no other solo acoustic S&M songs)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At Live Aid, Mick Jagger did a duet with Tina Turner, who had just become a grammy.

Douglas, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright Tracer:

Connect Femi Kuti to Stevie Nicks in ten moves or less.

Ha!

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Femi Kuti --> Fela --> Tony Allen --> Ginger Baker --> ahhh... crap!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fema Kuti --> Fela Kuti --> Ginger Baker --> Eric Clapton --> Jim Keltner --> Bob Dylan --> Stevie Nicks.

Nitsuh, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm a music trivia geek. I'm sorry....

FEMI KUTI

has been produced on a number of occasions by

JAMES POYSER

who is probably best known for his arrangements on tracks by

COMMON

who was recently in a poll of gay hip hop fans called the most homophobic rapper in existance, beating off competition from

EMINEM

who had his "97 Bonnie and Clyde" covered by

TORI AMOS

who has both slept with and had a crap song written about them by Mr Trent Reznor, as has

COURTNEY LOVE

who, in the film Sid and Nancy, utters the line "I look like fucking....

STEVIE NICKS"

Ouch.

Anyone fancy linking Eddie Cochrane to Third Eye Blind in under 10 steps?

Judd Nelson, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, I think Judd wins for creativity, and because contrary to Nitsuh's line I don't think there's any direct connection between Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks, although putting Tom Petty between them would solve the problem.

Eew . . . bad mental image.

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eddie Cochran -> covered by Sid Vicious -> who also covered "My Way" by Frank Sinatra -> who dueted with Bono -> who sings for U2 -> who in 1997 were supported on tour by Third Eye Blind.

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very good....

Is there an impossible seven degreer, do you think?

Judd Nelson, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Depends on how strict the contact has to be. If we require people to actually meet each other in person or perform together, sure. Otherwise, probably not.

Hmm . . .

Comedian Harmonists to Destiny's Child!

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ach....

COMEDIAN HARMONISTS

had an entire tribute album to them recorded by the

KING'S SINGERS

who also recorded an album of songs by

GILBERT AND SULLIVAN

who have also been covered by the

THREE TENORS

who did the theme tune for the 1990 World Cup, whilst the theme for the 1998 World Cup was done by

RICKY MARTIN

.... Ricky Martin to Destiny's Child in two? Must be possible. Somehow...

Judd Nelson, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both have been on Saturday Night Live, if that's good enough.

nickn, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They share a major label, Sony.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They both performed for Bush during the Inaugural festivities last year.

Tracer--have you ever heard the Johnny Thunders' acoustic song "Hurt Me"? It's sort of a solo S&M song, not really a fantasy, though. Why am I always talking about Johnny Thunders?

Arthur, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Give me Mel Torme -> Gang of Four

Dave225, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Comedian Harmonists ---> Palast Orchester mit ihrem Sänger, Max Raabe ("Veronika, Der Lenz ist Da") Palast Orchester ---> Missy Elliot ("Lady Marmelade") Missy Elliot ---> Timbaland (any number of tunes) Timbaland ---> Destiny's Child ("Say My Name" re-mix).

FEAR ME.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mel Torme often sang about "A Cottage for Sale" -- said cottage used to be full of love, a veritable "Love Shack", which is the name of a B-52s song. Sara Lee played bass for the B-52s and the Gang of Four. C'mon, make it hard.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Harry Belafonte to Hawkwind in six or less.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, since nobody else has answered...

Trio's cover of Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song" produced by Klaus Voormann.

Klaus Voormann plays bass on some of John Lennon's solo stuff.

John and Yoko appear on the Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus.

Latter-day Rolling Stone Ron Wood's first band, The Birds, cover Motown chestnut "Leavin' Here."

As did Motorhead.

Lemmy Kilmeister of Motorhead played bass in Hawkwind.

(That's six, but there must be a more direct route from Voormann to Hawkwind)

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(i am such a nerd)

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am more nerd:

Harry Belefonte's music was featured in the film Beetlejuice starring Winona Ryder, who has been romantically linked to Dave Grohl, who recently recorded a song with Lemmy. Challenge me, people.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well done. winona ryder's sluttiness will be very useful in this game.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, try Shonen Knife to Garth Brooks in six.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you can do it in 2, I think.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

G.G. Allin to Debbie Boone.

J, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't need six. Shonen Knife have a huge fan in the band Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore even showed up on their tribute album "Every Band has a Shonen Knife..."). Sonic Youth played Hal Wilber's Harry Smith tribute concert in New York City in 1999, as did Bob Neuwirth, who wore a cowboy suit and identified himself as Chris Gaines -- who is, of course, Garth's alter ego.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Colin! Dear God!

Sibelius to Damon Albarn. C'mon.

Daver, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DeeDee Ramone was briefly a member of GG Allin's band. Joey Ramone was asked to appear in an episode of the Drew Carey Show in 1998, as was Slash from Guns n' Roses. Pat Boone covered G n'R's "Paradise City" on his novelty metal album. Pat is Debbie's father.

Sonic Youth and the Ramones come in handy in this game.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a different one:

GG -> J Mascis (guested on "Hated in the Nation") -> Don Fleming (was in Gumball w/ J) -> Alice Cooper (Fleming produced him a copule of times) -> Pat Boone ("No More Mr. NIce Guy" is on "In a Metal Mood") ->Debbie Boone (duh)

J, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Carter Family to Ed Rush. Just to see how extreme one can take this whole thing.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But as PROOVEN by science, everything comes back to FUGAZI!

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cilla Black > Black Sabbath > Black > Black Flag?

sorry, i'm just saying words. i'll go away.

dan, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Finnish composer Sibelius has, unwittingly, given his name to a piece of music notation software. This software is praised by the overrated "post-modernist" hack composer Michael Torke on the company's website. Torke appears, along with even-worse "post- modernist" hack Christopher Rouse, on a godawful cd released by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra called "Dance Mix". Rouse's piece is called "Bonham", and is an homage to the dead drummer from Led Zeppelin. Zep's Jimmy Page played guitar with Limp Bizkit at last year's MTV Europe Awards here in Frankfurt -- Damon Albarn accepted the award for the Gorillaz on that same evening.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Carter Family's June Carter married to Johnny Cash--Covered Nick Cave's "Mutiny in Heaven"--Nick Cave covered "Avalanche"--also covered by Godflesh--whose Justin Broadrick guests on God's albums-- remix of God by My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields--My Bloody Valentine are sampled by Panacea (forget song at moment)--who have appeared at many a event with Ed Rush. . . Can it be done quicker

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rather than do the Carter Family to Ed Rush, I'll just clue y'all into my thought process: I'd go over Ida to Sasha Frere-Jones, and hit Google from there. It can go as far as you want to take it, actually.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn you Mr. Colin! I was just about the input the even more tenuous - Sibelius wrote The Tempest. So did Shakespeare. Sheakespear's Sister featured Marcy Detroit. Uh, Blur have, um, played Detroit.

I can barely type through the tears of shame.

dan, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.. Or Gil Scott-heron played on the Sun City project, as did Bob Geldof, host of Live Aid. Live Aid is the UK equivalent to We Are the World, which included Willie Nelson. Willie has performed many Hank Williams Sr tunes in his career. Sr, Jr.

Dave225, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gil's "the revolution will not be televised" mentions Johnny Cash, who has recorded many Hank, Sr. songs.

yeah, jandek stumps me. you haf defeated me.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's hard to connect Jandek to anything since he seems to work alone, but let's try this: Eugene Chadbourne reviews a Jandek album here. Eugene collaborated on freeform material with John Zorn, who performed with the Boredoms' Yamatsuka Eye in Naked City.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jandek had a song called "#14", and Boredoms have a song called "14". Does that count?

dleone, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, I had to google for this one, but it's simple:

Thurston Moore contributed to the Jandek tribute album "Naked In The Afternoon", Kim Gordon plays in Free Kitten with Yoshimi of the Boredoms.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hasil Adkins to Christina Aguilera, anybody?

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hasil Adkins has worked with the Cramps on several occasions. The Cramps feature on Soulwax's "2 Many DJs", as does Christina Aguilera.

Easy.

Domenico Madugno to Mr T Experience, please.

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madugno had a hit with "Volare" - also covered by Alex Chiton - Chilton's group The Boxtops was nominated for a 1967 Grammy in the Best Performance By A Vocal Group category - as were The Monkees - Mr T Experience covered "Pleasant Valley Sunday".

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chubby Checker to Aphex Twin.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Domenico Modugno got the industry's attention when performing in a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Ol' Blue Eyes did a duet with Willie Nelson on the duets albums. A few of the songs on Willie's new album were co-written by Bernie Taupin, who was one of the writers of the song "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart", which was covered by Mr. T Experience.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aphex Twin has had music videos made by Chris Cunningham, as have Placebo. Placebo have covered both "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Other" by the Smiths. The cover of The Smiths' "Shoplifters of the World" is a photo of Elvis Presley. And Elvis's live shows used to include a version of "Sweet Caroline", made famous by Mr Diamond.

Haysi Fantayzee to Tenacious D.

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if this works but...

Chubby Checker appears on the Calendar Girl Soundtrack which Neil Sedaka is credited with authoring, Neil Sedaka worked with The Monkees (so says AMG), The Beastie Boys have the lyric "Davy Jones' locker" on Licensed to Ill, The Beastie Boys worked with the Dust Brothers on Paul's Boutique, Beck worked with The Dust Brothers on Odelay, Aphex Twin remixed "Devil's Haircut"

Todd Burns, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

on nice and smooth's 'skill trade' smooth bee says he used to play spin the bottle back when chubby checker was doing the twist, greg nice from n&s guests on a bunch of beatnuts tracks, psycho les from the nuts produced ghostface's 'one', ghostface--> rza--> bjork--> plaid--> aphex.

ethan, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tenuous: Aphex Twin performed a song by Gershon Kingsley, who conducted on a Lotte Lenya number. Lenya had an extensive box set released by the label Bear Family, which also released a box set by Little Richard, who worked with Chubby Checker.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haysi Fantaysi's hit was "John Wayne Was A Big Leggy".

Serial killer John Wayne Gacy's artwork provided the cover for The Butthole Surfer's "Locust Abortion Technician,"

which contains "Sweat Loaf", an interpolation of "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath.

Ronny James Dio replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath.

Tenacious D's "Dio" is a tribute to Dio.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Celine Dion to The Dirtbombs.

fritz, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Celine Dion's song from the "Titanic" soundtrack is a dirtbomb?

J, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Celine performed several numbers written by Carole King on Let's Talk about Love. Alex Chilton performed Goffin/King's "Let Me Get Close to You" and he also worked with the Gories, one of whom went on to form Dirtbombs.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my So Solid one!

Jeff W, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who's Neil Read?

How about KLF to Slipknot?

fritz, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

KLF's Jimmy Cauty was in a band called Brilliant with Youth, a member of Killing Joke. Killing Joke sued Nirvana over a ripped-off riff on an album produced by Andy Wallace, who also mixed a Slipknot album.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, album was MIXED by Wallace, not produced. And yes, who is Neil Read? Only person I can find by that name is a ceramics professor. Do you mean Neil Reid, the trombonist?

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, I misspelled it. It is "Reid", but I don't mean the trombonist, I mean the granny's favourite from Scotland. Any more clues would make your life too easy.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hank Snow to Afrika Bambaata

fritz, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" was covered by the Rolling Stones. The Sex Pistols famous appearance on Grundy only occured because the Stones cancelled at the last minute. Pistol's frontman John Lydon has recorded with Leftfield, as has Afrikaa Bamabaata.

Eh... Blood Sweat and Tears to Blackalicious.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually John Lydon recorded with Afrika Bambaata on "World Destruction" so you can skip the Leftfield bit. Nice one.

fritz, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BS&T sampled on 3 Ft High and Rising by De La Soul...

fritz, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There must be a harder one.

Eh... OK, OK. Try... Scratch Perverts to Alkaline Trio.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scratch Perverts to Alkaline Trio

Scratch Perverts remixed De La Soul's "Squat." DLS played one of the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, which has also hosted Pavement, who are on the What's Up Matador? compilation with Guided by Voices, who once split a CD with Girls Against Boys, who are on Jade Tree, which has (coincidence?) released a split CD featuring Alkaline Trio.

M Matos, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
revive

ok, how about guitar wolf to cher?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 18 October 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a bit tenuous (and convoluted) but:
Guitar Wolf cover Summer Time Blues on Jet Generation.
The Who also covered Summer Time Blues, most notably at the first Woodstock, a festival in which Creedence Clearwater Revival also performeed.
Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty wrote Proud Mary, which was covered by Checkmates Ltd. on the album Love is All I Have to Give, produced by Phil Spector.
Phil Spector both produced Cher and used her as a back-up singer during his Wall of Sound days.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 19 October 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I got to Revenge Of The Nerds to "Are You Ready For The Sex Girls?" and then said fuck it.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hilary duff has done songs and tv with b-list disney teenstar christy carlson romano who was in the musical parade, written by jason robert brown, who also did arranging for yoko ono's musical. one of ono's installations had sounds done by david coulter, who records for michael gira's record label, also home to one devendra banhart.

duff covers "our lips are sealed" by the go go's
belinda carlisle of the go go's was in the germs
the germs' pat smear was later in nirvana
nirvana has tons of connections to sonic youth
sonic youth toured w/ swans
swans' gira discovered barnhart.

nickelback to chet baker, anyone?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

chet baker performed songs by ned washington, as did louis armstrong
Toni Andriacchi/Peter Polzak covered wonderful world and on the same album, Yesterday by Lennon MacCartney
Elton covered "Whatever gets you through the night" by John Lennon
Nickelback covered "Saturday night's alright for fighting" by elton john

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one!

junior senior to molly hatchet, please.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone can find a link between the Charlies Angel 2 cast and Eric Stolz then I've got it

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Accrding to "White Trash", Junior Senior wants to sing like Nancy Sinatra.
Nancy Sinatra's pop was Frank Sinatra.
Frank Sinatra played Vegas regularly. So did Tom Jones.
Tom Jones performed the hit "What's new Pussycat?"
Frank Frazetta did the cover for the What's New Pussycat? soundtrack, and for multiple Molly Hatchet albums.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)
