I was happy to see a little mention of ex-girl recently in another thread, and then I noticed how it seems like nobody knows about them on ILM. I've seen them live once and it was great, I think they've got a good sound, not something I've really heard before. No doubt having Hoppy Kamiyama produce them only adds to the originality. Anybody else out there like them?

I forgot to mention that the reason I made this thread is because the search function wasn't really working too well.

i like them a lot! i heard them a few years ago when their CD came through my radio station. i came for the fact that they were on alternative tentacles; i stayed for the cellos and weird vocals.

All I've heard so far is Back to Mono Kero and Kero! Kero! Kero! Back... is great, the other less wildly pop so not as great. Is Endangered Species a letdown after BTMK?

I need to hear some Hoppy Kamiyama.

larssen (larssen), Friday, 2 June 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Endangered Species was my introduction to ex girl actually, it's a lot cleaner compared to the other stuff I've heard from them, but it's got some of the best songs I've heard from any band. I've never heard all of BTMK though, and I really like Kero Kero Kero, that was the one I bought when I saw them live.

I've got an idea larssen. Maybe you can send me Back to the Mono Kero, and I can send you Endangered Species?

Endangered Species is really very fine. I'm not sure I've heard anything else by them, though.

Me and the missus were listening to Endangered Species earlier today!

We were also listening to the new Polysics album which is along similar lines.

Oi I lied!... I do have another rekkid by them: Big When Far, Small When Close -- and this one's fab too! :)

tiit (tiit), Sunday, 4 June 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Big When Far, Small When Close. I haven't heard that one yet, but I've always wanted to because isn't it entirely a cappela?

They are quite unique, I reckon they must have sung, maybe together, in some kind of Japanese traditional choir. I still have a sheet of their homemade stickers I can't bear to stick!

Nope, it ain't *entirelly* a cappella. There's some drummin', also some effects and stuff.
'tis a shortish rekkid: 8 tracks/ 25-plus minutes.

...the mightily brass-backed cover ov "Alabama Song" on it is also great, f-course! :)

A little ex-Girl goes a long way the other day, but did listen to Big When Far...earlier this year, and still liked. "Zoi Zoi" is pretty awesome, kind of reminds me of Les Baxter arranging a Magma tune.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 5 June 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

and Hoppy Kamiyama is a really cool guy. I talked to him when he came to Dallas a few years ago, and you can tell that he's very invested in having his bands perform well, and that the audience is having a great time.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 5 June 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody know what's up with the current line up of the band? It seems like members have been in and out lately. And I think all the information out there is wrong because Kirilola is on guitar now. When I saw them play I thought that the bass player looked a little similar to the original drummer Fuzuki, but I doubt that it's her though.

Anyway, I stumbled on these pictures from the same show I saw and thought they might be interesting enough to share. http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/1396164/1

Absolute super-geniuses. They remind me a lot of Laurie Anderson, not in
their sound, but in their mix of art and pop. They're currently #1 on
my list of bands I'm pissed off I haven't seen live.

Those pictures are great.

Has anyone heard the Punk Girl recording? see: http://www.rockofjapan.com/ex-girl.html

larssen (larssen), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

All I've heard from Punk Girl is their version of UFO, I'd really like to hear the rest though.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait a minute, it's Punk LADY. Because they're all doing Pink Lady covers punk style.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

Oops. Yeah, Punk Lady. Only thing I've yet to find. Seems like it could be fun.

larssen (larssen), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that thing sure seems really rare. I've never heard anything about it at all outside of the Rock of Japan website.

This is where I was able to hear UFO. http://www.live365.com/stations/mr_oni
