i can never understand, though, why jazz heads are all into session-ology. who played what, how many takes, etc etc.

2) Thank you.
3) I listened to a shitload of records and read a shitload of books and thought about all of that stuff, and then I spoke to a few people on the phone, and then I sat down and wrote for a year and a half or so. I didn't want it to be another bio, though, so I deliberately decided to write a book of criticism - one that was focused on the records, so people could read, listen, and compare their own thoughts and impressions about the music with mine, agreeing, disagreeing, whatever. I think that's been the key to the extremely favorable response the book's gotten. One of the Amazon reviews says something like "he makes risible assertions, then you pull out the albums and realize he's onto something." That's exactly the kind of response I was hoping to get - inspiring people to listen, and rethink.
I agree with you about the cover, btw. I wanted to commission a Corky McCoy-style cartoon painting for the cover, but the publisher wouldn't sink that much cash into the project.

Nope. Live music is off the menu for the foreseeable future, and live music that requires travel doubly so.
