I still can't get over the fact they are so revered in England. Here they are looked down upon. Soulwaw - or rather Fucking Dewaele Bros - is seen as a crappy MTV band and thus everything *attached* to it is snubbed. I haven't picked it up but I probably will. It won't available in England except as an import. Apparently you can only do 18 tracks per CD so that'd mean it would have to be a 3 CD. David/Stephen said that on one track they sample Wild Bunch - funny since I had just downloaded that track myself - which features the White Stripes' vocals. It was also very easy to clear samples for the Residents (only they had to send 100 CDs so the guys could distribute it among friends). Apparently loads of labels ask them to do remixes so the label can put it out (as a bootleg). Some of the samples aren't the *real* thing. One is actually a Japanese singer pretending to be... I forget... Mariah Carey? Argh for a band I dislike I know way too much about'em. heh.

robin - me too. If you're still in the first throes of bootsearching, go to: http://www.base58.com/booms/

I have the advance promo version of the album, which is slightly different from the version being released, but it's probably the best thing I've heard all year. There's that rare thing with a mix CD, an actual sense of giving a shit about the people listening to it, rather than self-indulgency. Some of the mixing is very original as well (Kosheen vs Nas into Marilyn Manson being a personal favourite). And how many other DJ sets this year are going to include "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys? Not enough, that's the answer.

Vinyl bootlegging is probably the ultimate music geek genre, to be honest. It's up to your mind whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The genre's even producing its own related artwork now.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shit, that didn't work. You have to click on "track by track" (bottom left) first, then on the flashing cursor at the bottom of the next screen, to see what I mean.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know what CD Mr Nelson has, but the official release of 2 Many DJ's has neither Kosheen, Nas nor Marilyn Manson on it. It does have Kylie, The Velvet Underground, Skee-Lo, Nena, Destiny's Child and a host of other top tunes on it, though. It's totally excellent!

JoB, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JoB! do you know whether it will be (already is?!?) available in any nederlandse platenzaak?

willem, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry... browser's been buggin' me all day...

willem, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CD's out this week. The Dewaele brothers DJ at the Amsterdam Paradiso this Thursday. Before that, they appear on Isabelle's 3FM show between 8-10pm CET.

JoB, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have some thoughts about the Soulwax bootleg album but I can't get to cockfarming blogger to post them.

Tom, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just bought it today and it is brilliant.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm going to the store NOW

willem, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn ILM, just bought it today. Love the packaging, gotta admit it's funny. Didn't even realize there's a Lords of Acid remix on it as well as an Arbeid Adelt sample. Hurray.

nathalie, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JoB- I have the promo copy that was sent out to journalists, which, annoyingly, is totally different to the released version, meaning I'm going to have to spend another £15 on that version.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2 out of my 3 favourite records of 2002 so far have been DJ Mix CDs.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Greatest shame - maybe Judd's promo is different - is that they clearly didn't get permission to use "Eye Of The Tiger" and so the theme song of Club Sussed (RIP) is denied an official airing, turning up in an enfeebled version. Or maybe they did it on purpose in which case they are mentalists.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Tom, most of their fave songs were being refused by the artists.

nathalie, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Survivor won't allow "Eye of the Tiger" to be sampled anymore, after it was used by Bush as an election song.

Hmmm....

Annoyingly, it's not on the promo version either. No Skee-Lo, actually, which is weird for Soulwax. I believe it's on the actual album, though, vs "Cannonball" by the Breeders.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like they sampled the Nikki Costa song but used another record - Alphawezen, I think. Apparently this avoids them getting into problems: they just pass on the complaint to Alphawezen.

nathalie, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i partied hard last night, 65mins of fun...

i'm new/not really into this dj-mix cd's, so tom, what's the other dj-album you're referring to?

willem, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he probably means the so solid mix CD, willem

yeah "2many djs" is great. on first listen, I liked it better the closer it got to bootlegging and the least like a traditional mix album it became. however, I agree with Tom elsewhere that the edges are blurring here, and that must be a good thing.

Jeff W, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

legally is much easier to release bootleg mixes than the bootleg tracks themselves - for the mix you only need to get compilation rights for the source tracks

michael, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyone else find the hidden kylie minogue remix? brilliant!

minna, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this and the ssc ablums are the only worthwhile albums so far this year

a-33, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, can anyone tell me what is the standard software people use to make bootlegs?

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ben, look here

willem, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan T, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(if there's no rewind on your CD player - as is the case with the one in my apartment grrr - you may like to know that the kylie thing is currently uploaded at the Boom Selection site)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
Now that I have a cd burner I've been listening to this (sans Kylie secret track) nigh on constantly. Fucking brilliant.

Tim, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you get to that Kylie track ?? I have RR but cant get any of my CD players to RR past to 0 point...

Is that what you do or is there anything else ??

BTW traders of any whitelabel mashup recordings or other stuff (avalanches etc) drop me a line... NO MP3 stuff...

PP

Phat Phreddy, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Martin S v. kindly bought me this for my birthday and I've been listening to it A LOT - up there w/ the Coldcut mix alb - the Destiny's Child/10CC mash-up is sublime - can't hear '99 red balloons' - 'Waiting for my Man' one of the few tracks that doesn't really work - I love the Skee-lo sample - can't work out how to get to the Kylie track - I notice the Beeb are using the 'No Fun/Push It' bootleg now...

Saw an ad in Mojo for another, older Soulwax alb called 'Much Against Everyone's Advice' - is it the same ppl? Is it any gd?

Andrew L, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Much Against Everyone's Advice" is technically a Soulwax album, whilst 2Many DJs is technically by The Fucking Dewealle Brothers. The former is their skewed-indie project, the latter is their DJing personaes. They are very different.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

skewed indie?!? its crap MTV lite.

nathalie, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's rubbish I believe.

Andrew L - try and track down a copy of their full-length Skee-Lo remix with the Eye of the Tiger backing music, very very good. They couldnt use it on 2 Many DJs because of President Bush.
