I've never heard anything by Tangerine Dream before, and was just wondering if this compilation is a good place to start (3cds, and pretty cheap). I like all the stuff that they've supposedly influenced - The Orb, the trancey end of DFA (Delia & Gavin, Black Dice) etc. Would I be better off checking out one of their better-known releases first?

That looks like a really fucking great compilation! It's got all 4 of their early albums PLUS rare singles - I'm buying it! I should warn you that their early stuff sounds nothing like the Orb et al.

It's a pretty good comp if you're already into the band (CD3 has tracks on it that were super-rare/near-unobtanium back in the pre-P2P days), but if yr wanting to get an idea of that they sounded like at their best, "Ricochet" is a much better pick.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, this is going on my shopping list for next weekend! I'm presuming that the super-rare stuff doesn't include anything by their original line-up, with Peter Brotzmann doing his Brotzmann thing on sax?

The pick of it is "ultima thule parts one and 2", one side is some of the best t-dream moog sequencer music, the other is ludictous guitar/mellotron gnarl. Totally out of character & great. I'll pick one up as well, for sure.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

i hate to disagree w/ pash but nothing tops zeit in the tg discog, imho

i shall also be getting this - never heard ultima thule B4

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

But Pash is right in so far as "Zeit" isn't in the the classic T. Dream style

Ah, that looks great. Me want.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

... i.e. the style that the Orb and everyone picked up on (xpost)

Phaedra/Rubycon/Ricochet are the pick of TD for me, "Zeit" probably next down from them.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't even got "Ricochet", I love "Rubycon"

... next boxset coming up methinks

Thanks peoples. If TDream's early stuff doesn't sound like Delia&Gavin, The Orb etc, what does it most resemble?

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

The weird bits in Pink Floyd records all strung together

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

...Probably about as near as yr going to get. The first 4 TD albums (Electronic Meditation/Atem/Zeit/Alpha Centauri), eh, it's kind of hard to compare them with anything, really. Even later T Dream!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well whole bits of them are lifted en masse from "Saucerful of Secrets" (see also early Ash Ra Tempel"), "Ummagumma" and "More"

Sounds tasty. Worth a £9 punt, at any rate. Cheers!

parts of the first 4 tg albs remind me of ash ra temple, cluster and esp. August 1974 by Taj Mahal Travellers (and therefore by extension halve maen by double leopards)

x-post

Anyone got theirs yet? HMV have had mine on "special order" for ages, and I haven't seen it ain any "proper" shops. Not that I'm particularly impatient.

WHERE'S MY FUCKING NEBULOUS DAWN?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 30 June 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's nebulous innit?

Mine still not either though.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

This looks good, but I already own three of the first four records.

What's the best comp for the second era that began with Phaedra?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

I would echo Pash's sentiments: start with Phaedra or Rubycon. These are the early albums, which are great, but not what I think most people would associate with as their 'classic' sound.

Finally picked this up in HMV yesterday. The Ultima Thule single is indeed one of the all-time grate dbl a-sides.

No mention of Brotz in the sleevenotes
