Minimal Hip Hop - can you recommend any

I'm looking for something that lies between the sort of slinky electronic minimal sound that you get from Perlon and the other minimal labels and a lower-tempo, hip hop groove, with more of a flex; less of a four-to-the-floor rhythm.

I don't know much hip hop, so the only clues I can give are: that Snoop Dogg track: 'Drop it like its Hot', and some Missy Elliot stuff.

It seems like it would sound really nice, but I don't know where to look/who to try - can you recommend any?

The Influence of Minimalism on Vernacular Music: questions (144 matching messages)

QUESTION #1
Why did the ideas implicit in minimalism have such a strong impact on rock music?

QUESTION #2
Did vernacular music have an equivalent impact on minimalism?

Any supplemental reading suggestions (bound, stapled or net) would be appreciated.

Why Minimal Techno is the best dance music ever: (127 matching messages)

i think i got it now. the two main factors are:

- polyrhythm offers constant re-entry points for dancing - if you miss a beat, theres always another drum pattern to catch you, whether its stoically supporting the central kickdrum (gecko, fumiya tanaka) or prancing around it (konrad black, villalobos)

- no vocals, "real instruments" or other sounds that demand attention, so once you have entered a state of trance, theres nothing to "wake you up", and you keep dancing for hours

all pretty obvious really, but (at least on ilm) everyones so focused on listening which i think is the dead wrong approach for this kind of music. its aiming for the subconscious and you dont get there by sounding interesting

Hit Songs with No or Minimal Percussion (94 matching messages)

"Stuck in the Middle With You" came on the radio today and it occurred to me that the song has almost no drums, save a kick and a little hi-hat, maybe a cowbell here and there.

Are there a lot of hit songs like this? (one guy/girl and a guitar or piano doesn't count for me)

Two more that occurred to me:

Extreme - Hole Hearted
John Cougar Mellencamp - Jack and Diane

this is the post-minimalist thread or whatever you want to call it (84 matching messages)

well, the initial point of this thread was to discuss what was initially a slightly more accessible variation of the idea. Nyman writing pop songs that appeal on a different level then say Reich's Four Organs, which either makes excellent background music or asks for very deep listening(Reich going on about being aware and hearing the "process")

Since then I've gotten Michael Nyman's book and read the final chapters where he lays out Minimalism and disucusses the differences between the initial American branch and the UK branch, and it's pretty informative, and I've been trying to get my hands on more Obscure releases.

Recently I've also wanted to chart certain composers that apply minimalist means/strategies/structures/processes/sounds or even superficial aesthethic similarities to a more accessible pop/rock context, though this has been discussed here and elsewhere, don't know if it deserves a new thread but here goes:

A few nights ago I played a La Monte Young/Theater of Eternal Music piece from the early 60s for my girlfriend, followed immediately by the Velvet's Venus in Furs, then played some Reich piano pieces followed by All Tomorrow's Parties, which is a bit of a lie since ATP came first. I've heard Cage prepared piano pieces(of which I'm not too familiar) that are probably more of a precedent to Cale's rhythmic/minimalist piano on that song.

Then w/ another friend I sat and listened to all the Henry Flynt stuff I have. Here's a guy in the 60s informed by rock, minimalism, bluegrass, raga, folk etc, he's got a rock band that, I think, like the velvets has a bit of repeition and raga sound, or am i giving him too much credit at this point? Is the Insurrections Record more akin to the Fugs/Godz then some sort of high-concept minimalist garage rock? One man's minimalist repetition is simply another man's rock and roll groove!

ANYWAY-minimalist informed rock and pop-C/D discuss, etc: some ideas:

Theoretical Girls-U.S. Millie
most Theoretical Girls and the Static stuff

Other No Wave bands? Anyone ever hear Rhys Chathams No Wave bands?

Wharton Tiers was in a band called A Band, a song on Homework vol 6 called No Love is definately minimalist rock.

Polyrock, produced by Glass and his co-horts.

And I'm not really looking for electronic artists.

Pretty Minimalism S/D (77 matching messages)

i'm in finals, i have a lot to do, i like to have music on. but it can't be too distracting. reich's music for 18 musicians has been my 'homework record' for years. pretty, maybe a little schmaltzy, rewarding even if you can't give it much attention, can repeat for hours and doesn't get exhausted...well until recently. i need more!

so tell me of more nice pastel 'lost in the tunnel of the mind' shit like that, or whatever music you like when you have a lot of pain-in-the-ass reading or work in front of you.

I do get the impression that the use of vocals appears to be diminishing, which I think is a shame in basically any genre of music

spurred by this comment, and being hipped to Cassy's "night to Remember", what other music si there that is house/techno like this not necessarily for the dancefloor, but with songs about heartache, or love or anything like that?

i want to have my heart strings tugged but by the minimal producers, and i know, i know we have had "Tearful Techno S/D" "Sad Techno" etc etc etc threads but they all seem dominated by german boys singing in english.

for some reaons i want girls. so anything like Cassy's "Night to remember"?

If the first pair is about emotional release, and the second pair is about meditative transcendence, what's the third pair about? Does it ruin things that pop art is necessarily about critiquing pop as much as it is itself pop? (In other words, this pair can't merely be about entertainment.)

Help Identifying Late 80s - Early 90s Minimal Techno song (30 matching messages)

Okay, this is my turn for this... but my frustration is that i can't accurately describe this song very well...

1990, i had just turned 18, i had just moved to san diego and we'd go out dancing at clubs in tijuana.

there was this one song with this really synthy "bell"-like melody (kinda playful but gauzy and atmospheric, yet minimal and ambient). the rhythm was 4/4, the melody was on the beat but it was like 1 full then 2 half then 2 half then 1 full for each four bar measure. so like 6 notes per bar (4/4).

i've been trying to ID it for years, but the lack of vocals/lyrics is really inhibiting. about a year and a half ago i was at a FCUK shop in SF and they were playing a pop (?) song that sampled it slightly in the chorus or maybe even the verses.

i would imagine it would have been fairly popular... it was played at least until 1991, early 1992 at the clubs.

some online research has yielded very few songs. i've tried 808 state "pacific" most recently but that wasn't it, that was way more acid-jazzy. this would've been basically a beat (4/4 bass), the synth-y bell like melody, and maybe some ambient wash... although i haven't heard it in 11 years and i was probably under the influence every time i heard it.

help me ILM.

"Random Rap" -vs- "Minimal Synth" (30 matching messages)

things are getting kinda hectic in ebay-land, my friends. The New York Times has already come calling about the random rap phenomena. (Even johan "got it, got it, need it, got it" kugelberg is preparing a comp of the stuff for souljazz)ebay is glutted with former dollar bin rap singles that are now demanding the big bucks (even i, a piker, made 250 bucks on a long ago one dollar investment) based on...well, what exactly? rarity? maybe. though nobody knows how rare. plenty of people still have no idea that this stuff is selling like hotcakes. a lot of the desirable stuff comes from age-old want lists passed down on the internet from generation to generation. this and the word of mouth that comes from the mythical land of the northern soul dancer! the land of the rising sun and john bull locked in eternal bidbot combat for the last remaining high fidelity three singles to be had in peoria and tulsa! and meanwhile, on the other side of town, all those crappy looking local new wave albums and singles that you passed up cuz they were from your hometown -thus probably pretty suspect- are giving the usual suspects fits. yes, the brits and the japanese, it goes without saying, but also belgium and italy and even anytown u.s.a. two years ago in boston was the first time i saw an actual "local new wave" section in a record store. and not local to boston, local to you, me, your family, your enemies. local as a universal aesthetic. which is groovy and the collector's way. but we aren't talking about gutbucket kugelbergian diy do your homework connect the dots secret history of incredibly strange art students kinda stuff. we are talking about homegrown softcells of sometimes dubious merit. and just how minimal does your synth have to be? there are no hard and fast rules, but the stakes are raised every day. a word to the wise: there is still PLENTY of this stuff around for cheap. buy it up and slap a minimal synth sticker on it and you are good to go. buyer beware. so it actually sounds more like the b-52s and not so much like suicide. who will know? it's on its way to tokyo and you are long gone. that jonny x-ray & the rayz single on pdq records out of podunk is looking pretty good right now, isn't it? i'm banking on two little unknown new wave sweeties from 1980 saratoga to buy my groceries next week.

I'm looking for somewhat minimalistic pop songs with a steady dancable drum beat. (25 matching messages)

Stuff like "Temptation" by New Order or "Disorder" by Joy Division where it sounds like they just threw it out in one take punk style, but it's got that steady dancable beat, even though it's not a dance song, per say. New Order are best at this, even on their most dance heavy albums they have a few songs that sound like straight ahead indie dance songs. The Strokes do it, except they aren't very good at it. Anyway, these are the type of songs that make me fantasize about being in a band, and I want some more stuff like it!

Modern Hip-hop minimalism roll call (24 matching messages)

So in honor of the Ying Yang Twins releasing the same awesome song twice, I'm trying to remember the the songs that led to such tiny, sparse, quiet pitter-patter on the radio.

As far as I remember, "Grindin'" started this whole mess (not that it didn't have it's roots in the skeletal 808s of Run DMC and blahblahblah).

Off the top of my head...

Clipse - "Grindin'"
Ms. Jade - "Big Head"
Neptunes and Roscoe P. Coldchain - "Hot"
Murphy Lee - "What Da Hook Gon Be?"
Young Gunz - "Can't Stop Won't Stop"
Snoop Dogg - "Drop it's Like It's Hot"
Ying Yang Twins - "Wait (The Whisper Song)"
Ying Yang Twins - "Pull My Hair"

Any others to contribute?

An interesting question about minimalism... (21 matching messages)

If a band make minimalistic music, let's say they're a slowcore band, and they freely admit that the reason they play minimal, quiet, slow music is because they aren't very good at playing, but they're still a good slowcore band, would you have a problem with them?

While searching through my old files I came across a WAV of me playing the melody of a song on an old Casio keyboard (link - forgive the poor quality of playing, I was probably, like, 13 at the time). I still haven't found out what this song is - I seem to remember hearing it a long time ago at the laser show at Stone Mountain Park, GA. I remember it seemed pretty weird and abstract to me at the time, though by my standards now it's probably pretty straightforward. If anyone knows what song this is, plz tell me.

Bobby Peru's Minimalist Review of ATP (VG) 05 (8 matching messages)

In as few sentences as possible, in order of appearance, no DJ's included, with five star rating system.

Yuka Honda: Good keyboardist, weak vocalist, and mild show, w/ Lennon Jr. switching around on instruments. (I'll still follow her recordings though). **
John Spencer Blues Explosion: a burning hott hybrid of Otis Redding, the Yard Birds and Sex Pistols, but mo' tight & dirty. *****
Thread Pulls: Hard-Emo Snoozers. I might've been impressed had I not heard the same sound done ten-times better in California last weak at the Oslo show. **
Lydia Lunch: This punk beat poet was running on empty. **
Afrirampo: Take hard and multiply it by weird, then add the squreroot of cute. These two japanese hotties put all the other kooky-girl-noise bands to shame. *****
Peaches: Personally, not a big fan - but her show is raunchy, rude, and undeniable fun. Everyone else's favorite performance. *****
Women and Children: was literally putting me to sleep. *
Buck 65: Brits say "brilliant!", yanks say "i miss g-love". Not enthralled by the sensitive, down-temo KidRock. **
Money Mark/Kid Koala: I had huge expectations, but without his band there was no comparison to the sound on his live album. Sadly, Kid Koala wasn't given the chance to save the day with more of his own numbers. **
John Foxx: This synthpop veteran really had his act together. ****
PJ Harvey: her vocals and guitar sounded great, but I think you need to be familiar with her songs more to fully appreciate the stripped down solo versions. ***
Vincent Gallo/Sean Lennon: I want everyone to know that I (and the rest of the audience) were giving this person every chance in the world to turn us around. We waited patiently in that hot and crowded room, while he became the first act of the weekend to come on much later than scheduled. After an eternity of tuning and checking Sean did one solo song, and it was nice enough. Then VG took more time tuning, etc. Later they started to kind of play something (noodle, noodle) interspersed by VG requesting they turn up his mic or bass, which was ridiculous considering he wasn't doing a thing with them. Noodlenoodle. Noodelnoodle. About half the crowd and myself left after 10 minutes. That little troll had some balls to treat an audience that way, while standing on the same stage as artists.
Suicide: If you just try to imagine it was 1978 and these guys are blowing your whole mind, then it was really strange and enjoyable. But try not to snap out of it and realize you're watching a couple of artifacts doing the same retarded routine for thirty years. ****
The Tints: These kids have a lot going for them. Their music isn't one of them. Much like a good high school band, which they are (sans virtuosity). **
Ted Curson: Easy like a Sunday morning. A brief window into the under represented world of musicianship. *****
Jayne County: She's holding up wonderfully. Awesome encore cover of California Uber-allies, w/ new lyrics dedicated to Arnold. ****
Gang Gang Dance: Suck Suck Bore. What's the motherfucking hype? *
Magic Markers: Only saw a couple "songs". No opinion. 2 ghost stars.
James Chance and The Contortions: Owned it, fucked it, and killed it. *****
Prefuse 73: Some of the best translation from studio to stage I've heard in the electronic genre. Some very exciting moments, but it did get repetetive. ****
The Zombies: I walked in just before "She's Not There" plus two encores. Perfect harmonies, keys, and backing. One of the best rock&roll performances in history. *****
Yoko Ono: Gallo, Honda, and Lennon backed while Ono squaked, hollered, and cackaled along for a bit. Frusciante and Afrirampo came out at the end to jam. She gave out little flashlight keychains as party favors so that all the people can share her message of love, in the (blinkblink) language of ONOCHORD, a primitive morse code. Can you feel the love? *

Sorry to have missed: Nikoli Haas, I am Kloot, Merzbow, Vitamin B12, Autolux, Olivia Tremor Control, John Frusciante, and Leslie Winer.

The Winner is: Afrirampo by a mile.

Additional Notes: An ongoing theme seemed to be women freaking-the-fuck out. (afrirampo, peaches, lunch, ono). The DJs get four stars for not playing house music all weekend. Making all the shows was a serious hussle, and took real endurence. The video programming on the cable channels in the rooms were underutilized (by the curator and the attendees). Suprised to see no other visual arts at all (besides the Brown "%^&*$ Bunny). The overall vibe with people was great. Nearly everyone we met were super-friendly and completely silly. We made a bunch of friends instantly. The "chalets" were more like dorm rooms, but the area of Camber Sands and Rye is lovely and the weather was perfect for the first couple days. Lots of people were taking pills throughout the weekend, but zero weed was to be found, and hash won't do for this cali-kid (Yes:it makes certain shows much more enjoyable, especially here). I did appreciate the insane partying going on twentyfourseven. These limeys are off the other end of the handle! But someone really should have warned me that the girls have no ass here. I wasn't prepared for that.

The wole experience: ***** (I'll be back!)
Shouts to: H, Amy, Debi, Jill, Ericka, Lotti, Anna, Hiacynth, Sarah, Garreth, Greg, Adam, Pheobe, Kemrexx and Jeff.

minimal and commercial piano driven hip-hop song id (6 matching messages)

so, i was driving into cleveland tonight and i heard a song on 107.9 fm (cleveland's hip-hop station), but i missed the intro and they never said its name afterwards. it was an extremely minimal hip-hop song, built on a mid-to-low range piano, non-808 handclaps (they may not have been sampled), and sometimes some simple drumming (usually just a kick). i don't remember any of the lyrics, but i do remember that it had multiple emcees on a lot of the lines. totally awesome. the piano really struck me because i don't think i've heard that range of the piano used rhythmically in hip-hop or any other kind of electronic music. i thought of the neptunes but i don't think they're this creative. maybe i'm wrong.

it's almost certainly new, because this station doesn't play much music more than one or two years old, especially on a saturday night.

Minimal Hip Hop - can you recommend any (2 matching messages)

I'm looking for something that lies between the sort of slinky electronic minimal sound that you get from Perlon and the other minimal labels and a lower-tempo, hip hop groove, with more of a flex; less of a four-to-the-floor rhythm.

I don't know much hip hop, so the only clues I can give are: that Snoop Dogg track: 'Drop it like its Hot', and some Missy Elliot stuff.

It seems like it would sound really nice, but I don't know where to look/who to try - can you recommend any?

Word on the street is that Steve is going to be playing the secret after-party too, come and find me if you're interested.

Serious? I'm deadly serious.

I'm sure there's stuff out there, people are always talking about how great hiphop production is, but you've got to wade thru a lot of shit before you get to the good stuff. like - where do you start with the neptunes? Most of the stuff i've heard of theirs is covered in rap/r&b vocals that kind of ruin it.

i'm looking for that clean, electronic sound. rapping's ok (eg on that snoop dogg track), but a load of shouty nonsense about guns and bitches is off the mark.

Isn't Blockhead pretty minimalist? I'm sure you'd avoid your "bitches" and "hoes" if you went that route.

The beat is cool. Generally most rap songs start off excellent with the beat and instruments. But then the "singer" comes in, says more prophanity than even I could stand, and in the end sounds like everybody else. It's like 98 degrees, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, etc... they all sound a like. They mostly curse alike and talk about brutal ways in which they want kill people, or the way they've seen people be killed. It's lame, it's depressing. And personally, I hate the N. word.

Spank Rock. Just got it. that's what I'm talking about!

NOt very slinky, but electronic, and lots of space. And makes you want to jump up and down, which is essential.
