Best software for laptop mix CDs

Looking for recommendations of software enabling me to produce smooth mixes from playlists of MP3s or Wavs. Ideally, it would have a simple interface, low cost, time stretching & pitch shifting, and ability to zoom in on segues to micromanage volume profiles. Any ideas?

Audacity?

nearly all multitrack audio editing programs have these facilities. try cool edit pro (now adobe audition) or just search google for a free audio editor with a few fx thrown in. try download.com or something like that, i'm sure they have a few on there that are free/cheap.

if you want something that resembles a conventional mixing setup there are a shitload of mp3 mixer programs around today. the best of the best probably being traktor dj.

google is your friend.

Be warned if you have an Intel Mac, Audacity doesn't currently work. I'm told their working on a universal binary.

Try the Mixxx program-- it's been working pretty well for me at parties, though it depends on how wild you want to get...because it is free software, it has its kinks.

On a Mac. Doing mixes, not in realtime. Ableton seems geared to doing stuff, um, Live.

What I really want is Audacity with beatmatching and a slicker interface. ???

Use Traktor. It's great.

two weeks pass...

Thanks, it is. But it !@#$%@# my iTunes tags! (eg, sets an album tag where I want it blank.) I'm going to have to either make copies of the files I want to use, or make my library read-only before I run Traktor. What do you do?

abandon itunes.

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Thursday, 5 November 2009 07:36 (sixteen years ago)

Doesn't matter what software I use to manage my library, I wants my id3 tags the way I wants them, and Traktor Pro fucks with that.

What are the other options for mac users apart from itunes? One of the reasons I've put off getting a mac is that I don't want to be tied to itunes.

songbird, doubletwist

songbird looks ehhhh, i know nothing about doubletwist.

cool, thanks.

sam500, Thursday, 5 November 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

songbird is great when it's stable. haven't tried it for a year or so but i liked it. check the Traktor forums for your issue sam, i'm sure you'll find a solution there.

my version of traktor reads my id3 tags perfectly and i'm on a mac + I use iTunes.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it reads them fine, but it also re-writes them, which i wasn't so cool with. i dunno, i'll look into it more.
