First big singles by these bands, neither really resembles what they're doing at this stage in their careers, etc etc.

(sub-t/s: Boy vs. Pablo Honey)

"i will follow" is gorgeous. "creep" is nauseating.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

i will follow by a mile!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I Will Follow because the acoustic version slays me.

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

The sound effects in "I Will Follow" toward the end really annoy me for some reason (sounds like milk bottles clanking together or whatever). The guitar "chg-chg" before the choruses of "Creep" is great!

Both flawed songs, but I think today I'll pick "I Will Follow" regardless of what I just said above.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I Will Follow forever, Creep never. If I want to listen to Adorable b-sides then I'll listen to Adorable b-sides.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

The only real winner here, it would seem, is Coldplay.

Maybe Starsailor too.

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

"Creep" is great. "I Will Follow" was OK, but there would be several years before they were able to do genius (partly through getting rid of Steve Lillywhite)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

I WILL FOLLOW is uplifting and cathartic.
CREEP is self-absorbed and miserablist and
at least U2 never went into the studio to change 'FUCKING' to 'VERY'.

i prefer radiohead by a mile but you know, not in this case.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

"I Will Follow" by 10,00,000,000 years.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Creep" is fantastic, and I'll never understand why the Radiohead ripoff bands could never manage to be as loud as what they were ripping off. The breakdown of "My Iron Lung" is verging on metal, at least for a bunch of art-rockers...

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

u2 have always been shit.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, come on. I can think of hundreds of reasons to prefer Radiohead to U2, but precious few to prefer "Creep" (hardly characteristic of what people like about Radiohead) to "I Will Follow" (which is just a great New Wave pop song).

John Schapiro (Vornado), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

"I Will Follow" is a nice little post-punk thing, a little inert. "Creep" is greatness, the quintessential self-loathing song, the one that makes all others like it obselete.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

"I Will Follow" by several dozen lengths.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

u2/r'head = black crowes/phish

dave q (listerine), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

i was listening to that first black crowes record on cassette i found at my mom's house...damn that's some pretty tight jamz.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

neither really resembles what they're doing at this stage in their careers

I dunno, is "I Will Follow" really that different from, say, "Vertigo"?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, very.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

"I Will Follow", easily.

Dan (No-Brainer) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Creep"

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

I Will Follow, but the seldom-heard pre-Boy 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is better than either of them.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

'creep' is weak, 'i will follow' is massive.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like "Creep" more if it resembled PiL's "Public Image" or "This is Not a Love Song"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

it's the least of the many popular 'creep' songs

gear (gear), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Pisces - I'd just point out that U2 being good little Christian boys at that point never had the balls to put the word 'fucking' in a song.... and the main reason Radiohead had to change it was that Americans apparantly have an aversion to bad language in their entertainment...and at that point it looked like they were going to do far more business in the USA than in the UK....

Paul Grimshaw (eriverpipe), Thursday, 8 June 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

u2 using "fucking" in a song would be kinda embarrassing, like hearing your grandma curse or something.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 8 June 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

So saying "fuck" means you have balls? In what grade?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 8 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

a Mojo article revealed that "Creep" was reckoned within the band as their "Scott Walker" song. Which I did and still do not get.

"Creep" is lousy, but not as lousy as STP's song of the same name. When they came back with the Bends, I was amazed that a band that was indistinguishable from Bush had some good songs. then, I wrote as much in TimeOut NY, and I was told that a clerk at Kim's on Bleecker street threw the mag on the floor after reading that and exclaimed "this magazine fucking sucks." Heh.

so…"I Will Follow" is bettah.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Radiohead is my favorite band, but come on, "Creep" sucks.
