I can't say I am very familiar with his work (more on the jazz and Latin jazz side of things than my taste usually runs), but he died recently at a young age and a lot of people in Latin music circles are upset about this.

Hilton Ruiz, 54, Pianist Fluent in Jazz and Latin Rhythms, Dies
By PETER KEEPNEWS

Hilton Ruiz, a versatile and prolific pianist equally at home in the worlds of modern jazz and Latin music, died yesterday in New Orleans. He was 54 and lived in Teaneck, N.J.

His death was announced by his agent, Joel Chriss. Mr. Ruiz had been hospitalized in a coma since May 19, when he was found unconscious on Bourbon Street in New Orleans with severe head injuries. The police said that he had injured himself in a fall.

He had been in New Orleans since May 18 to promote a CD benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mr. Ruiz spent his career shuttling between two separate if not entirely dissimilar musical words. He spun dazzling, harmonically sophisticated improvisations in the bands of Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Betty Carter, in groups he led, and occasionally as a solo pianist. He also provided rhythmically insistent support in the ensembles of Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria.

He could probably have had a concert career if he had chosen that path. Born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, he was a classical piano prodigy and made his debut at Carnegie Recital Hall when he was 8. But jazz and Afro-Cuban music won his heart.

Mr. Ruiz began working with Latin bands in the New York area while still in high school, and around the same time he also began studying jazz piano with various teachers, most notably the pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams.

"She showed me a lot about what not to do," he once said of Williams. "When I did something wrong, she'd say, 'No, that's not right, that's corny, that's not happening. Do it like this. Move over. Let me show you how it's done.' "

He was barely out of his teens when he first attracted national attention in 1973 as a sideman with the saxophonist and flutist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. With his striking technique and his grasp of a wide variety of jazz styles, Mr. Ruiz was a good match for the famously flamboyant and eclectic Kirk, whose repertory ranged from boogie-woogie to the avant-garde.

"All the music I enjoyed was part of the Rahsaan experience," he later recalled. "We had to play all these musical flavors every night. I had to research."

After four years with Kirk, Mr. Ruiz became an active freelance sideman, working with Clark Terry, Chico Freeman, Abbey Lincoln and many others. He also performed regularly in New York as the leader of a trio and in duos with various bassists. During the last 20 years he worked primarily as a leader and recorded for Novus, Candid and several other labels.

He had been scheduled to perform at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center complex in New York, at a Latin jazz festival in July.

Mr. Ruiz was the co-author of the three-volume guide "Jazz and How to Play It" and contributed to the soundtracks of the films "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "American Beauty."

Survivors include his former wife and his daughter, both named Aida, of Teaneck.

He was featured on the best track of Luisito Quintero's latest album, Percussion Madness : here's what he said

"Hilton Ruiz one of the top Jazz pianists and our hero came in and really put an enormous blast of energy on the track. He played two incredible solos, one Latin style and the other jazz. Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual sang the choruses once again and took us to the street. Gene Perez on electric bass opens up the song and takes one of his rare solos. And this is where we introduce a full brass section, Ozzie Melendez on trombone, John Scarpulla on Baritone Sax/Tenor Sax and Brian Lynch on trumpet, true Latin jazz. What a crew!!!!"

RIP

There are disturbing questions around his death: the family is not convinced that the injuries were the result of a fall, and I just found an old AP article that said the doctors found that unconvincing as well.

I thought the fall story sounded a bit off. Ugh, such a loss.

Pianist Hilton Ruiz in Critical Condition By JANET McCONNAUGHEY Associated Press Writer

May 24 2006, 11:27 AM CDT

NEW ORLEANS -- Jazz pianist and composer Hilton Ruiz was in critical condition Wednesday, nearly a week after he was found on Bourbon Street with an unexplained skull fracture and broken bones in his face, according to his agent.

Ruiz, whose 54th birthday is next week, has been unconscious since he was found early Friday after leaving the Utopia bar, agent and manager Joel Chriss said from New York in a telephone interview.

Chriss said he was told that the initial police report said Ruiz had fallen, but added: "The doctors apparently said that's unlikely, given the nature of his injuries."

"One could easily draw the conclusion that he was attacked, though lawyers have asked us not to characterize it that way because we have no proof," Chriss said. "We have no suspect, no weapon."

Police spokesman Bob Young said Wednesday he had no information on Ruiz.

Keith Darcey, a spokesman for East Jefferson General Hospital, said Ruiz remained in critical condition Wednesday. Privacy rules kept the hospital from giving any details, he said.

Ruiz has performed on more than 500 recordings, including 30 as leader, according to his Web site. He was in New Orleans for radio and television interviews, Chriss said.

His wife issued the following statement on this incident:

Dear Friends of Hilton Ruiz, I share with you the sad news of Hilton Ruiz. While filming in New Orleans for his latest recording, a dedication to New Orleans, Hilton was assaulted after stepping out of a nightclub by a group of men of which he has socializing with shortly before the assault. Hilton was taken to emergency with multiple fractions to the face and suffered a cardiac arrest while in the ambulance.

He is currently in stable condition, in a Coma under life support equipment. All inquires can be made directly to his daughter Aidita Ruiz or Hilton¹s record producer Marco who can be reached at Marco@m27world.com

I feel it would be appropriate and appreciated for the historians of music to educate us on the wonderful musical career of Mr. Hilton Ruiz and adding Prayers and positive energy.

Thank you,

Adela Dalto

The following was posted to a salsa newsgroup. I'm not sure exactly who originally wrote this, so I'm not vouching for it. Given what I've heard about police in New Orleans, this seems sadly plausible.

On Sunday June 11th and Monday June 12th, a viewing was slated to be held at the Barrett Funeral Home for Hilton Ruiz. His body had yet
to be released by the New Orleans coroner's office and therefore
could not be turned over to the family in time to make the scheduled
wake. They are still conducting an autopsy of Hilton's body. While
this may seem like a step in the right direction for those of us who
are not convinced that Hilton's death was the subject of a mere
accident, New Orleans has a history of both crime and especially
corruption within Government agencies and law enforcement. It is
quite possible that this delayed autopsy is also a means by which to
sabotage any link between what happened to Hilton Ruiz and what
really befell him, along with who his assailants were.

It has now come to light that a video exists that was confiscated by
NOPD that clearly shows Hilton Ruiz emerging from the Utopia bar
near Bourbon street and then collapsing to the ground where, as we
know, he was found in a pool of blood with multiple bone fractures
across his face and his skull split in half. The family has also
clarified that the lawyer whom they had originally tapped to
represent them in New Orleans, Mary Howell, issued an unauthorized
press release to the media indicating the family was satisfied with
the final result of the police investigation (claiming Hilton
tripped and fell to the ground causing him such severe injuries to
his head). It turns out that Mary Howell happens to be a personal
friend of the New Orleans Police Chief. What is also significant is
that the Utopia bar, where Hilton was last seen and to have emerged
from, employs off-duty NOPD who moonlight as bouncers. As of TODAY,
the New Orleans coroner's office has yet to indicate to Hilton
Ruiz's family when exactly will the body be released. All of this
evidence creates a very disturbing scenario that leads to one
conclusion. A Cover Up by NOPD authorities with possible collusion
by members of NO City government.

Even if you are not familiar with who Hilton Ruiz was, the fact that
a human being's life was unnecessarily taken away and justice has
not truly been served on the part of city and law enforcement
officials in New Orleans, should give anyone cause for concern. YOU
might be next. Do NOT let these folks get away with murder. I ask
you all humbly to please and strongly consider contacting members
who make up the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and not only request,
but DEMAND, that they petition the offices of the United States
Justice Department to launch an official investigation into the
death of Hilton Ruiz.

Family of Late Jazzman Sues Dance Club

Family of late jazzman Hilton Ruiz sues dance club in New Orleans, says patrons beat him

NEW ORLEANS, Jun. 20, 2006
By JANET McCONNAUGHEY Associated Press Writer

(AP) The family of the late jazz pianist and composer Hilton Ruiz has sued a Bourbon Street dance club, saying he was attacked and beaten there and the club's bouncers failed either to protect him or to help him afterward.

The club's manager denied the accusations, saying "We have no knowledge of that whatsoever."

Ruiz, 54, of Teaneck, N.J., died June 6, about 2 1/2 weeks after he fell in front of the Club Utopia, named as the defendant in the negligence lawsuit filed by his daughter, Aida Ruiz. He excelled in a wide variety of styles from Afro-Cuban rhythms to the blues, and had come to New Orleans to make a video to go with a benefit recording for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"We are very confident there are people out there who are aware of what happened to Mr. Ruiz in that club in the early hours of May 19," attorney Scott Galante said Monday. "We are urging people and pleading with people to come forward to my office or the New Orleans Police Department with their information."

After he had been in the Utopia for several hours, the lawsuit alleges, Ruiz was attacked by several people. The club's security workers "failed to intervene in any meaningful fashion," or to call an ambulance for Ruiz, but instead threw or escorted him out and "abandoned" him even though he was clearly unable to make his way to safety, the suit alleges.

Utopia manager Fred Woodruff said that, as far as he knows, that never happened. He also said that he had not heard about the lawsuit, which was filed last week in Civil District Court.

Woodruff said he has not reviewed the club's security tapes, and police have not asked to see them.

Galante said, "Obviously, it's something we're seeking," but wouldn't comment when asked whether he had asked the club for its tapes.

Ten days before Ruiz was hospitalized, an altercation involving five people inside the Utopia led to a murder just outside, police have said. In that case, a man argued with three women who refused to accept drinks from him, hitting one with a bottle and punching another, and then shot and killed the man who escorted the women outside to wait for an ambulance, police said.

Police have said they first investigated Ruiz's injuries as an attack, but witnesses and other evidence all indicated that Ruiz fell early May 19.

He never regained consciousness.

Police spokeswoman Bambi Hall said the department is cooperating with the family's lawyers, but stands by its investigators' original conclusion. "We can't speak to what Utopia did or did not do," she said.

Mary Howell, the first attorney retained by Ruiz's daughter and ex-wife, also named Aida, said while Ruiz was still alive that his family was convinced that Ruiz had accidentally tripped or fallen.

But the younger Aida Ruiz then retained Galante.
