P.S. We want hen fap (henfap), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

not having to listen to the Arctic Monkeys is proof that god loves Americans and wants us to be happy

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, they went to No. 24 in the U.S. charts. I'm American, and I like 'em fine.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Not a Lex thread?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Not a Dom thread?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Rickey's fave albums of '06:

Van Hunt
Spank Rock
"Postpunk Classics for Baby, Volume 2"
Tom Ze
Marty Robbins, "The Missing Years (1984-1993)"
Arctic Monkeys

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

I have come close to buying this album twice within the last couple weeks.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, they went to No. 24 in the U.S. charts. I'm American, and I like 'em fine.

That was purely on hype alone and you know it. They debuted at #24 and then sank like a stone. God bless America.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

It's a pretty good album, no more:

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

The songs I've heard are ok. There are WAY worse bands on MTV right now.

Marmotdeth (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see the fuss about them at all but I think bands like Keane,Orson and Snow Patrol are far far worse.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

no they aren't

"but are in fact one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life"

you haven't sat through enough shitty opening bands then

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

Please, its ILM player hating at its finest.

Overhyped band meet board, board hates band.

I like a few of their songs a lot. The album as a whole doesn't stand up to repeated listening though.

hector (hector), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I have bought the album and all, but I still cannot see why they are sort of seen as the saviour of British pop and all that.

Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand both released albums in 2005 that were way better than that Arctic Monkeys debut.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

my point isn't that they're bad it's that they're so bad that promoting them beyond shitty local warmup group status is "overhyping" them

Henfap (henfap), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

i would say the vines are worse

gear (gear), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

kaiser chiefs are worse as well

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

chaki you ever see a band in l.a. called 'the vacation'?

gear (gear), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

the vines have some really good songs, they just seem to release them as b-sides

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

gear, no but ive seen their myspace. i try not to listen to that stuff!

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

they're terrible! and also worse than the arctic monkeys!

gear (gear), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

i wanted to hate them - they look like the kind of boring english tossers that cause fights outside pubs round here ( bondi bch - backpacker central)...but goddamn it - myself and everyone else in the record shop where i work love it - and none of us were expecting to like a whole album of 'the members' style brit rock...but figgit - that album is jammed full of great riffs/lyrics/songs

grapple (grapple), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

i meant fuggit

grapple (grapple), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

great. just what i need. another discussion about the arctic monkeys. I'm glad we set our time machines to 2005. NEXT!

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life

Not my favorites, but I like them more than the Strokes or Franz Ferdinand or Arcade Fire. I really like that "fake tales of san francisco" song.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

One band that they are better than is Creed.

I might've survived Arctic Monkeys, but I still can't escape that scallywag rascally yeaforsooth knave James Blunt...

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 8 June 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

Honestly this thread just makes me like them a little more. This is really harmless stuff people, of all the shitty bands out there I can't understand why this would be the one to wind you up.

worst. guitar solos. ever.

heart - dave

captain dave destroyer (words + guitar), Thursday, 8 June 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

Bad guitar solos are usually better than good guitar solos. The last thing a band needs is a lead guitarist who feels entitled to go on at any length whatsoever; if he/she can't play a lot of notes, the band really has no choice but to get back to playing the damned song.

The Arctic Monkeys, like most of those damned bands, are relentlessly, perhaps deliberately average. That much having been said, at least they're not below-average, which (as compared to most radio bands) makes them regrettably above-average.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Thursday, 8 June 2006 06:00 (nineteen years ago)

Kaiser Cheifs are the worst band in the world ever. AMs are kind of "meh". Y'know, for kids. I'm 27 and have a big hi-fi - their music is not for me.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

ILM welcomes Mark Radcliffe to its ranks!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

Haha!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

Objectively I think it good for AM haters to have their own thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm from Sheffield and can confidently remark that the Arctic Monkeys aren't even the best act in Sheffield. By a long chalk. Step forward Richard Hawley, This Floating World, Reverend and the Makers, the Long Blondes, Smokers Die Younger and Jody Wildgoose.....

Paul Grimshaw (eriverpipe), Thursday, 8 June 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

You spelt Monkey Swallows the Universe wrong Paul.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 June 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

kaiser chiefs are worse as well

No, they aren't. Kaiser Chiefs write excellent Britpop-influenced highly melodic pop songs, and they are the best of the entire new Brit indie generation.

Franz Ferdinand also write some great tunes (particularly on the second album) while Arctic Monkeys still don't seem able to get the tunes quite right.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Franz Ferdinand also write some great tunes (particularly on the second album)

Uh-uh. Like an idiot, I bought the 2nd FF album off the back of liking the singles. The singles are great, but they're the only good tunes on the album.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Arctic Monkeys have had number one singles. Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand have not. Therefore Arctic Monkeys are superiors. All are noisy crettins when compared to genuine melodics contemporary pop purveyors like the Feelings.

Comstock Carabineri (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

entire world >>>>>>>>> franz ferdinand > arctic monkeys > kaiser chiefs

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I mean: "The singles are great." Craz-eeee!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Alls I'm sayin' is, I was really pleasantly surprised by a lot of the album cuts. Their knack for ballad-y stuff that remains catchy while going in very interesting and unexpected directions is downright Beatlesque.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

It is remarkable how they can spin a dozen minute variations on their one song.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really think "Fade Together" and "Eleanor" sound anything like "Take Me Out" but maybe I'm missing something.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

You can tart up a turd in many different ways but its essential turdness is unalterable.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

certain turds produce a pleasant squishing when forced into the ear canal

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

But not the overheated, overrated caterwauling of one-hit wonders.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

I will admit that I probably have a weirdly-formed opinion of Franz Ferdinand and that I am probably the only person in the world who got exactly what he wanted from their new album.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

keane, snow patrol = burnt toast.

ff, am, kaiser chefs = burth toast with a little bit of butter.

pop music should at least come with some sort with cheese. these bands need more cheese.

TomTomGo!!! (TomTomGo!!!), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Oh don't, you'll have bloody Sean Rowley coming on here with his Guilty Pleasures.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Look, the Kaiser Chiefs are a better band than the Arctic Monkeys.

Rather like how Mussolini was a better humanitarian than Hitler.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ is a GE Money Genie (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

"Kaiser Chiefs write excellent Britpop-influenced highly melodic pop songs"

vs

"Oh my God / I can't believe it / I've never been this far away from home" = one note sub-football chant (plus crappy three-note cadence at the end). Ha!

Franz Ferdinand >>> Kaiser Chiefs > Arctic Monkeys >>> All the favourites of Lex, except Girls Aloud

Arctics are the worst as even on the level of pop music they fail very miserably indeed... lumpy, boring, grey, and utterly conventional and ordinary//

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

In Lex's defence, he does also like Tom Lehrer. GA > Tom Lehrer > FF > AM > KCs

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

lumpy, boring, grey

I'm convinced!

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

They don't excite on any level- apart from a vague kind of dull anger against them. Even that isn't that exciting. Its such a shame the name "ordinary boys" is already taken by another crap band...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

The call and response bit they do with the guitar and voice is kind of exciting as is tracking the kind of subdued anger he's got in his voice.

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 8 June 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

It probably works if yr young and haven't got bored with this kind of thing yet, I would admit.

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

All I know is that I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor was absolutely horrible. I downloaded it to see what the fuss was all about and didn't make it through to the end of the first chorus.

Take Me Out, on the other hand, was pretty good. Wasn't it? I remember it being pretty good.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 8 June 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

I mean. It's been awhile.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 8 June 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

I like "When The Sun Goes Down" better than "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor". Those are the only ones I've heard besides "A Certain Romance", which they played on SNL but I don't remember how it goes.

Marmotdeth (marmotwolof), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

The singles are great, but they're the only good tunes on the album.

No. the best tracks are the ones where they don't try to sound like The Strokes, but instead try to sound like The Beatles or The Kinks.

Marmotdeth (marmotwolof), Friday, 9 June 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' is far the best track on the album. In fact, it's the only good song.

This post in this thread makes me like them a little less. And if anyone has the unmitigated gall to react to my sentiment, I'll accordingly rachet up the meta-dislike another notch.

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

The songs about hookers bore me. The one about San Francisco and the one about truncheons are my favorites.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

As a SF resident, I find insulting their suggestion that my tales of walking my cat, searching for parking on a Monday night, and forgetting to pick up OJ at the corner mart while dodging insane peeps are false.

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

The singles are actually not great at all. I've sat through them dozens of times over the past 6 months, and I still can't recall how any of them sound.

Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand both released albums in 2005 that were way better than that Arctic Monkeys debut.

This is actually true. Kaiser Chiefs only have 2 good songs, which is 2 more than Arctic Monkeys.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

In fact, I wish "I Predict A Riot" had this kind of hype last year. That song deserved better.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

christ, that band (Kaiser chiefs) can eat poopoo

youth problem (YouthProblem), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

I pretty much agree with Pashmina re: 2nd FF album, except the only single I liked was Do You Want To. The rest of the album bored me.

I thought 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' was sort of OK but not really my thing, better than a lot of the NME bands though. Other songs I've heard by Arctic Monkeys have been pretty crap though.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

I bought a load of records & CDs in Fingerprints in Long Beach while I was on holiday last year and the counter bloke gave me a few 7"s free, one of them was "I predict a riot". It wasn't the worst single he gave me (that was some crap by The Music).

Gigi (Gigi), Saturday, 10 June 2006 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

God help me but I kind of like the record. At any rate I stand by what I said about there being way worse crap on MTV right now, and out of the worst bands I've ever heard these guys wouldn't even make the top 100.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

I was all geared up to hate them, I mean "Arctic Monkey", wtf is that?

However, once I started listening to their songs, I couldn't help but find them mostly enjoyable.

Most of the songs on the album are good, though none of it is quite nearly as good as the hype suggests. I admire their energy and the singer has an appealing voice and delivery.

People have made a big deal about their lyrics. While the singer has a talent for stringing words together in a pleasant manner, I take issue with the actual content and meaning behind the words. He has some kind of weird puritanical streak where it seems like he's looking down on just about everything fun in the world. It's like he's trying to imitate Jarvis Cocker, but completely lacks the necessary irony to pull it off.
