alternately, sign of the times vs remain in light + tom tom club s/t

i am leaning towards the tina + co, even though in terms of overall career arc prince blows away david byrne

except possibly in the field of a+r ...

(strange and possibly pointless t/s: prince vs david byrne, who is a better a+r ... or t/s: luaka bop vs paisley park (excepting his majesty's recordings))

also since hopefully this thread brings out the talking heads fans, are the reissues worth it? do they make the bass loud enough? does "making flippy floppy" sound like an andre 3000 outtake?

It's Prince's birthday! I pick him.

Marmotdeth (marmotwolof), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

Both somewhat overshadowed by classic predecesors (Dirty Mind and Remain in Light), both burdened with filler, yet somehow near-classic all the same. I couldn't live without non-canonical songs like "Private Joy," "Making Flippy Floppy," "Pull Up the Roots," and "Jack U Off."

it is close, yeah, but controversy wins for the foldout poster.

Controversy any day of the week. And then, indeed, the poster.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

um. you all so crazy!

speaking in tongues is WAY better on a song-by-song basis ... excepting "controversy" itself, of course.

reasons tomorrow.

Both these albums are uneven, but both have some of my favorite songs (controversy, obviously, and naive melody). I feel like Speaking in Tongues has more classic songs, though, so I pick it.

Oh, and the talking heads remasters, in my opinion, are a pretty remarkable improvement in sound, at least in terms of loudness and detail. I wasn't blown away as much as I'd thought I'd be (or maybe hoped?), but still much better than listening to those old cds. Now, what everyone really wants to know: when will they remaster Prince?!

Talking Heads in a walk.

i dated a girl who said she used to masturbate to "do me baby." i've never known anyone who masturbated to talking heads. advantage: prince.

I did know someone who wanted to masturbate David Byrne, though.

I think it really just depends on what kind of shape my libido is in on any given day.

I usually prefer Prince, but would like to give props to "Speaking In Tongues", which may be the most underrated Talking Heads album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 8 June 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Controversy" is such a great song that for years I thought Controversy was a better album than it actually is. What's odd is that I've never heard Speaking In Tongues all the way through. It's the one w/ "Burning Down The House", right?

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Prince's second-best album (after *Dirty Mind*) vs. Talking Heads' fifth best album (or worse, it's not like I've kept up with them -- not even close to their first four, though)? *Controversy* by a mile.

Charles Joseph Tarcisius Eddy (xheddy), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Controversy has the title song, "Do Me, Baby" and "Let's Work" on it = Controversy is UNTOUCHABLE.

Dan (Easy Peasy) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Having listened to both last night, I decided that while Talking Heads could (maybe) do "Controversy," they can't do "Do Me, Baby," thus Controversy wins.

three years pass...

are the reissues worth it? do they make the bass loud enough?

just a bit of archive searching whilst listening to the cd+dvd reissue - yes, the bass is definitely loud. listening with volume turned UP is awesome. as is the whole remixed for dvd album, fantastic. this was always one of my least favourite TH records, how wrong.

to my "looking for edge" ears, i thought controversy had it's moments, but speaking in tounges won by a nose... i don't even think i could make a choice between remain in light and sign o the times with a gun pointed to my head, but speaking in tongues, though imperfect, captured my attention more than controversy ever did...

the fact that my first ever concert experience was the heads "stop making sense" tour might have influenced this decision though (and set the bar for later concerts WAY too high every band ever after)

Private Joy is so not filler. it rules.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 4 February 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

Prince >>> Talking Heads. I guess I'd choose "Fear Of Music" or "Remain In Light" ahead of virtually anything he's done after 1991, but other than that, Prince walks it here, regardless of options.

This thread inspired me to listen to "do me baby" for the first time in awhile.
