The Airto Moreira/Flora Purim thread.

Seems like there isn't a thread for them yet. So, classic or dud, your favourite tunes, other thoughts?

I've been a big fan of theirs for years, but their older albums are pretty hard to find (espcially Airto's), so I own mostly compilations and such. My favourite is probably this (though my CD version has some extra tracks compared to the LP version linked), which seems to collect Airto's work with Hermeto Pascoal (another Brazilian artist who's records are pretty hard to come by). It's kinda different from his fusion era recordings, more acoustic and "traditional", though there's still lots of experimenting on these tunes. But I love his fusion stuff too, "Tombo in 7/4" and "Samba de Flora" never cease to delight me. Then there's his work as sideman, which is a whole new issue.

As for Flora, my favourite record is probably this, though it's more of a band recording than a solo effort. Anyway, the version of "Cravo e canela" here (with Milton Nascimento as a guest) sounds better than previous versions by Milton himself.

Has anyone seen Airto live lately? They're playing this summer at a local jazz festival, and I wonder if they're worth seeing...

Bigtime concurrence on that live "500 Miles High" LP. I've played that one a LOT.

Airto's "Touching You, Touching Me" has been kicking my ass lately in a late 70's slick LA-production fusiony way, not entirely dissimilar to Gil's "Nightingale." Picked up "I'm Fine, How Are You," hoping for more white linen suit-type jams, but not nearly as good, if good at all. Also got Flora's "Encounter," which was a little bit too laid-back and airy for me, had Ron Carter, Airto, George Duke(?) on it, will try it again.

last year's "Flora's Song" was pretty good overall, some cute compositions by their daughter [cannot remember name]

I find it kinda cute that Airto and Flora always seem to appear on each other's albums, and have done so for 35 years or so. Must be true love!

has anyone heard this album?

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc000/c000/c00029hu82h.jpg

i saw it in the store the other day, but wasn't really ready to drop 20$ on an album i'd never heard.

i'm also not really the biggest fan of Hermeto Pascoal. i've bought three of his albums and they've always left me flat. dunno why. sorta wanky fusion w/soft melodies.

Pascoal better as a guest, or as the nominal subject of an album (Itibirê Familia Orquestra), than as solo, yeah I could see that.

i've also listened to Flora's "Butterfly Dreams" many times in the store only to put it down and go home and wonder why i didn't buy it.

re: seeds on the ground

Looks like the compilation I have is actually just "Seeds on the Ground" and "Natural Feelings" on one CD. In which case both are highly recommendable, though the "Seeds on the Ground" is probably bether.

thanks bangelo! those banda black rio (and w/caetano) and bola sete albums look good.

Seeds on the Ground just keeps getting more and more beautiful as i listen. hardly the fusion wank i was expecting.

Wow.....this is a trip. All through my kiddyhood, my dad had Flora Purim's album Everyday, Everynight (which is beautiful, btw) on constant rotation. I've never heard of her anywhere else until now.

The only Purim I've heard is on Chick Corea's Light as a Feather, which is pretty great.

THe 2 previous lps are pretty great.
I picked up the 1st of thsoe, Butterfly Dreams from an HMV sale about 25 years ago then grabbed the 2nd Stories tO tell off a torrent site a couple of years back. They get pretty other at times, in a psychedelicish way. Quite good.

Stevolende, Monday, 18 February 2019 17:18 (six years ago)

Butterfly Dreams & 500 Miles High are peak Flora imo. I love her at her most unhinged.

Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 18 February 2019 17:46 (six years ago)
