2006: The Year Where Indie/Undie Rap Shines Like A Star!

hahaha, just kidding. but i really dig that spank rock album, and i dig the new mr. lif album (def jux sending me promos. oh what a difference several years makes), and i really dig the album *KRAK ATTACK* that i got by *CX KIDTRONIK*. okay, that's only three albums, but what the hell, i've only received 2 indie rock CDs this year that are worth listening to more than once. so indie rap is ahead! what other fun stuff am i missing? cuz i think that is the common thread here. the three i like are fun to listen to with fun beatz and samples and they are nothing like the broccoli rap that i usually get. granted, none of these CDs contain anything as brilliant as that T.I. single or anything on the new Da Musicianz album, but they get close at times. i'm not a hater. i just play one on t.v.!

Jack Cole (jackcole), Friday, 9 June 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

just wondering, what were the two indie rock albums worth listening to?

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Friday, 9 June 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

just wondering, is the actual work more important than who released it and if they were incorporated or not?

1. P.O.S. should be on MTV2 every five minutes. I have no idea why the critics are sleeping on this guy. His new record is the best thing Rhymesayers put out since Lucy Ford. Total Warped Tour rap by a basement-show-dwelling shouter. Both of the two-headed dogs in one noggin

2. J-Zone and Celph Titled as The Bo$$ Hogg Barbarians is a treat. Fake E-40 beats and disses galore. Faux-mysoginist and faux-gangsta, but not "ironic." More like the dirty, self-aware Ice Cube stuff with an Afros sense of humor.

3. these Tanya Morgan cats out of Cleveland/Brooklyn do the hyperkinetic fast-rap stuff over beats that are like Primo-on-crank. Super busy stuff but throwbacky in a comforting way.

4. J Dilla, duh!

5. And this Roc C I just got in the mail from Stones Throw!

Plastic Little 'Thug Paradise'.

Check 'Foil' and 'I'm not a thug' especially. plasticlittleraps.com. There are samples on the site. There's PJ Harvey sampling 12 out at the moment too.

The Tanya Morgan album is really really good, I keep meaning to get around writing about it for Stylus. It's like a really unsmug Little Brother.

i think i started a 2005: The Year Where Indie/Undie Rap Shines Like A Star! thread but i dunno where it is.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

skot, i know it got hated on a lot, and i know it's from last year, but i think you should check out the second Quasimoto album. it's really one of the most fucked up, psychedelic hip hop albums i've ever heard. it took me a long time to get my head around it. the samples start and stop and start again and just get fucked with in the middle and back around again. it's really a head trip.

also, yes to Whiney - Jay Dee's "Donuts" is amazing.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really enjoying the new Mr. Lif. "Murs iz my manager" is seriously fun.

erklie (erklie), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

so that kidtronik dude has been around since the 80's, but i ain't never heard of him. i think you can listen to some of the new stuff on here: http://www.myspace.com/cxkidtronik
