Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I pine for those halcyon days of ELECTROCLASSHHHH!

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Avenue D lyrics, for your edification:

You know the scene, we be dancing all night your dick's getting hard and my pussy's tight
pull me to the bathroom and you're teasin' me, but I wanna go home so you could be pleasin' me
it's getting hot, you're ready to go say goodbye head out the door
DJ says, "stay one more song" gives you more fucking tickets to get your drink on
you go back to the bar, start pounding old E
should be home by now, should be pounding ME

jergins (jergins), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

"the sound of kill whitie"

zappi (joni), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

their song on the erlend dj kicks is so incongruous and great

jergins (jergins), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

the girls have proven that one never really knows what to expect next from the explosive booty duo.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

the very idea of "explosive booty" is terrifying.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 10 June 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but an "explosive booty duo"? Run for the hills.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Saturday, 10 June 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think I found my new favorite group!!!

Joseph Patrick Larkin (Joseph P. Larkin), Saturday, 10 June 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

Girl on the right has kind of a Blossom thing going.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Saturday, 10 June 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

shit is wack.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 10 June 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

this group is so two years ago.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 10 June 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

...and girl on left is vaguely Candace Cameronish. It's the revenge of the ugly duckling girls from bad early 90's sitcoms!

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Saturday, 10 June 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

i'd have sexual intercourse with it

Q('.'Q) (eman), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

yep. the pearshaped broad could especially get it.

333333333333 (33333), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

their song on the erlend dj kicks

i forgot about that song. mainly because every time i heard it i skipped it. guh

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

looks like the hoTTTTer version of CRACK:We Are Rock.

more like an uglier, sluttier version. i have a wicked crush on one of those crack girls.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

The stuff I've heard by Avenue D I actually like all right, although I don't think I'd ever buy one of their albums except if I was at one of their shows and I got a more full-scale crush on them going. Definitely one of those homemade-sounding groups where the main thing you'd change is that the vocal recordings are crap with really inconsistent levels and a generally dry/flat feeling. With the right remix they can really nail it - I have a "Pete Remix" of "You Love This Ass" that's totally hot. If a band is all about sex, does it become less sleazy and creepy to say that I'd want to be their groupie?

I do think the way they package and present themselves is Interesting (though not enough to write an essay about). Having a band whose entire thing is "the girls are hot and they rap about sex" is self-evidently (defiantly? refreshingly?) gimmicky. Obviously there might be a lot to say about this from a feminist/WS perspective but I'm a little too burned out to muster that, so from a strictly ILMy angle - does it alter one's experience of a raunchy, lewdly direct lyric to have it be on an entire album of the same? Would "I'm A Dirty Bitch" work better or worse if it were the only fuck anthem on the album? Blah blah blah.

When I first discovered Avenue D a few months ago I went through a week or two of trying to write a lyric performing/engaging some of my own fantasies "in the style of Avenue D"; I let it sleep for a while and when I came back to it I thought it was garish and gauche and wouldn't fit alongside anything else I'm trying to do musically. That's not to say I haven't done sex in songs at all, but just that whatever balance A-D strike, it's trickier than it looks.

Alternate question: has anyone here ever made love to this music? How was it?

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 10 June 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

i really don't even get this shit. it's like how japan produces bukkake and five black dude gangbang movies but it's all still censored cause they're horribly sexually oppressed. all of a sudden they explode and out comes this shit that is just weird and gross and dishonest.

333333333333 (33333), Saturday, 10 June 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

and it's always all these weird plastic electro beats that sound really shitty and they can't rap. and it's all these dudes like DR. CASINO and fat nerdy mp3bloggers jocking them and standing in the front row completely motionless with their tiny slimy dicks all hard.

333333333333 (33333), Saturday, 10 June 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, look at that shit!!

333333333333 (33333), Saturday, 10 June 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

In my defense, I've never been to an Avenue D show, and if I did go, I would stand in the back to better conceal my tiny, slimy, all-hard dick.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 10 June 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

i saw avenue d. they played a big electro night a few years ago. they were better than gravy train, not as good as dirty sanchez. usually the dudes running the night would try to alternate between a scene dj (like, say, tiga or tommie sunshine or larry tee) w/ a live act, but eventually it got harder and harder to book the djs ... i guess they had planned to work up to felix or hell or miss kittin but their rates prob went through the roof as electroclash exploded) ... so, we were stuck with increasingly corny live acts. i saw princess superstar and ARE weapons before it all imploded.

one thing nobody on this thread really is getting at is that in my experience around 50-75% of the audience for these things = gay scenesters and fashionista girls. so it's a lot more of a camp thing and a lot less of a "dudes jocking these chicks" thing.

that's totally obvious in the last picture i posted.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 10 June 2006 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

it's always seemed like coked-up scenesters playing at something (see kill whitie ref above) instead of anything very serious.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 10 June 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

i thought they were pretty good live, too. this is probably a couple of years ago now.

ding ding ding. & don't forget the gay fashionistas & scenester girls! "do i look like a slut?" was as big as, i dunno, "house of jealous lovers" (maybe bigger, due to being a NOVELTY SONG) for the indiedisco/electroclash fashion show afterparty / gallery opening set. equated them w/peaches rather than the gravy train!x4/hawn4y tr0of set (ie, people actually dance to them).

Boring trustafarian girls with an 808 slumming it in Williamsburg.

maria b (maria b), Saturday, 10 June 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I do think the way they package and present themselves is Interesting (though not enough to write an essay about).

haha, this is like the ultimate ILM putdown. "so bad I had to pitch a feature about it" is the new "so bad it's good". it's hilarious to me that ILM will get up in arms about this stuff while more or less giving a free pass to slightly more tasteful hipster bullshit like Lily Allen.

but yeah i'd hit it re: the Blossom-looking one

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 10 June 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really mean it as a putdown FWIW - I do think there's a lot going on in Avenue D re: the intersection of hip-hop, sex-positive feminism, the fetishization of indie women, and the "expert remixer" versus "we made this ourselves on our four track" split.... which I would consider capital-I Interesting. I just don't have anything to say about it, so I was hoping (lazily) to stir the pot of this thread further past "OmG their ugly & electroclash is S00000 2001!!!" without having to do any work myself.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 10 June 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't one of their boyfriends guest-host or comment or something over at Fluxblog (or maybe it was another mp3 blog) once. I have a hazy memory of such a thing, and don't plan to waste time confirming it.

sorry i can't think of anything from the last three years!

this is presumably because electroclash doesn't exist any more!

it's weird that there is an avenue d thread in 2006, i didn't even know they still made, y'know, songs and stuff.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 11 June 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

do i look like a slut is a great track. We played with them last year at an obscenely late hour and the brunette jumped on stage and grinded blowfly during "too fat to fuck"

He REALLY wants to play with them again.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Sunday, 11 June 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

it's weird that there is an avenue d thread in 2006, i didn't even know they still made, y'know, songs and stuff.

As it happens, the Avenue D thread from 2003 offers a just-slightly-more-positive consensus on the band, suggesting that, indeed, ILM as a hive mind has determined that electroclash and anything related to it sucks and is over. Good thing we still have the moral high ground against trendism, right?

this is presumably because electroclash doesn't exist any more!

P.S. Miss Kittin's I Com (release: June 2004...did electroclash still exist then?) = one of the best records I've bought in the last year.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 11 June 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

"Do I Look Like A Slut" = classic

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 11 June 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

sorry guys, i never listened to electroclash when it came out. behind the times and all.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Sunday, 11 June 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

i even vented against it then

jäxøñ (jaxon), Sunday, 11 June 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think in ILM's reactions to this kind of stuff people totally forget (or are just unaware of) the levels of camp and gay-culture decadence in the NYC party scene that wraps around this stuff -- as if you're imagining this act as part of some rock-club context, and not as more or less a party treat. Part "Williamsburg trust-funders?" Maybe -- but just like disco, plenty of the moving force behind this stuff comes from (e.g.) gay Puerto Rican teenagers and Homeless Club Kids and honest-to-god freaks and whatnot. I.e., the kinds of people ILM is usually really proud of w/r/t dance music (so long as it's a couple decades later and they're all gone somewhere else). Seriously, browse through the fan photos on their website and you'll get some faint sense of this.

Not that Avenue D are very good, or anything, but I just want to remind people that they also exist in the context of parties where there are guys go-go dancing in chaps.

i dont understand the...suspicion, of anything like this. why everything has to be 'real'. its not even clear what this 'real' is

∂ (duff), Sunday, 11 June 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Avenue D are not trustafarians. The spanish girl is from Miami's Kendall area, which is about as middle class as you get.

track music is/was real big down here, when she was growing up due to our wretched radio station "Power 96" and while I hate that shit -- her perverted version of it makes for good dance music especially on "Do I look like a slut" which is almost a perfect ass-on-the-dancefloor cut.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Monday, 12 June 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

yeah casino was talking to me last night about this and i couldn't remember anything about them - 'do i look like a slut' was awesome i still can't remember anything else by them and they're cute and all but neither approaches jenna von oy so don't know what all the droolings about.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 12 June 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

in retrospect these ladies were even better than princess superstar

honestly though, few live shows i've seen could match the greatness of dirty sanchez and their lipsynced cabaret-ish version of "sex dwarf". not even fischerspooner's 2nd tour was that good.
