i forgot about that song. mainly because every time i heard it i skipped it. guh

more like an uglier, sluttier version. i have a wicked crush on one of those crack girls.

I do think the way they package and present themselves is Interesting (though not enough to write an essay about). Having a band whose entire thing is "the girls are hot and they rap about sex" is self-evidently (defiantly? refreshingly?) gimmicky. Obviously there might be a lot to say about this from a feminist/WS perspective but I'm a little too burned out to muster that, so from a strictly ILMy angle - does it alter one's experience of a raunchy, lewdly direct lyric to have it be on an entire album of the same? Would "I'm A Dirty Bitch" work better or worse if it were the only fuck anthem on the album? Blah blah blah.

When I first discovered Avenue D a few months ago I went through a week or two of trying to write a lyric performing/engaging some of my own fantasies "in the style of Avenue D"; I let it sleep for a while and when I came back to it I thought it was garish and gauche and wouldn't fit alongside anything else I'm trying to do musically. That's not to say I haven't done sex in songs at all, but just that whatever balance A-D strike, it's trickier than it looks.

Alternate question: has anyone here ever made love to this music? How was it?

one thing nobody on this thread really is getting at is that in my experience around 50-75% of the audience for these things = gay scenesters and fashionista girls. so it's a lot more of a camp thing and a lot less of a "dudes jocking these chicks" thing.

"do i look like a slut?" was as big as, i dunno, "house of jealous lovers" (maybe bigger, due to being a NOVELTY SONG) for the indiedisco/electroclash fashion show afterparty / gallery opening set. equated them w/peaches rather than the gravy train!x4/hawn4y tr0of set (ie, people actually dance to them).

He REALLY wants to play with them again.

As it happens, the Avenue D thread from 2003 offers a just-slightly-more-positive consensus on the band, suggesting that, indeed, ILM as a hive mind has determined that electroclash and anything related to it sucks and is over. Good thing we still have the moral high ground against trendism, right?

Not that Avenue D are very good, or anything, but I just want to remind people that they also exist in the context of parties where there are guys go-go dancing in chaps.
