Just wanted to know what everybody thought about the recent explosion of two piece bands. Like the White Stripes.

I likes me some two piece bands! With two people it's easier to remember their names, anyway.

In my experience the problem doesn't tend to be "they don't have a bass player" so much as "the guitarist sucks and the vocalist probably does too." The two-piece format seems especially vulnerable to awful gimmicky concepts, since only two people have to think something is a good idea in order to run with it.

On the other hand, you have great bands like the Gossip, which is a three-piece but Beth Ditto doesn't play any instruments, so it's a guitar-drums-vocals band that sounds much MUCH fuller and more interesting than that, I guess because now the guitar and vocal can be doing different things and filling out space in the arrangement, whereas when the guitarist is the one singing you tend to get rhythmic strumming coffee-shop stuff.

Somewhere in between: Cars Can Be Blue. Discuss?

See also House of Freaks, K's Choice. Every generation gets their own shitty bass-less band.

Used to be you replaced the drummer with a box. Nowadays, you replace the bass with nothing.

The Flat Duo Jets must be the granddaddies of this kind of thing.

emekars (emekars), Saturday, 10 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

I reccomend everybody go out and grab Death From Above 1974's "Your a Woman I'm a Machine" It's dance friendly, the songs are fast loud ,heavy, and build up and end abruptly. Before you can realize DFA1974 is a two piece, drum and bass band.
