like some of the Flying nun bands: Clean or Tall dwarvs, or maybe GBV, or The Fall - i mean Mark E.Smith and Robert Pollard do tend to put out everything they record, no filtering involved, so maybe except from their obvious masterpieces, the next best thing is their compilations.who got the time and energy to check everything they did over the years anyway?!
more examples?!

Pretty much every significant '60s Motown act.

Also, Three Dog Night.

There are no obvious masterpieces with the Fall, I don't think. They were very consistent, album-wise, up through the mid-'90s. So saying "better at compilations" re. the Fall only seems relevant in the same way that you could say that about any artist (like if you listened to the One CD and said, "The Beatles were better at compilations").

I disagree.
If i had to recommend some Fall albums to a new fan,who doesnt know shit, i'd say get Hex,Slates,Saving grace, Wonderfull and frightning world and afterwards you can start with the comp. (early stuff, singles).
Those records represents their music quite good, for an average Fall fan,( not a total obsessive grupie): The Fall do tend to get repetetive in a good way but also in a bad way sometimes,
and they had their faults once in awhile.

...also for some "Can" fans like me, their Canibalism compilation IS their best record.
I Can't listen to their main albums from start to finish, without getting bored at points.i know im not the only one.

Yeah, I'm not saying that they were perfect, but I am saying that I like Shift Work and Code:Selfish as much as I like Wonderful and Frightening and Saving Grace. Or I probably like Frenz Experiment more than I like Saving Grace. I like Infotainment Scan and Cerebral Caustic more than I like Bend Sinister and I Am Kurious, Oranj. Etc.

I do agree that Slates/Hex were a cut above, but beyond that ...

I think you are in the minority...

People are really going to big up Bend Sinister and I Am Kurious Oranj over any of their nineties albums?

Shift Work and Code: Selfish are kind of the lost classics, I think.

absolutely. my two firm favourites. many other people would claim "extricate" to be their best album ever.

Joseph OTM about 60s Motown.

Also, Sweet and Slade (even though both did release the occasional good glam album)
