What do you think to Ice Cube's 'It Was A Good Day'?

Jimmmy (Jimmmy), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

the remix is great.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I like how secretly political the song is. The verses are all lists of good things that happened, allowing us Bougies to say "me and Ice Cube, we're not that different, we're both trouble on the basketball court," and then each is capped off with shit like "plus no one I know got shot in South Central L.A.," and you're like, wait, maybe my life isn't really at all like Ice Cube's.

max (maxreax), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone think that out of the nwa members ice cube is better than eazy e and dr dre, solo

Jimmmy (Jimmmy), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

What do you think to Ice Cube's 'It Was A Good Day'?

This is actually carefully phrased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

uh, Ice Cube's early 90s solo work murders everything Dre and Eazy (and Ren and Yella) did after NWA, imho. (Possible exceptions being "Doggystyle"/"The Chronic" - but even with those I'd prefer to listen to "Death Certificate")

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

even the Lench Mob albums are better than Eazy's solo stuff!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

Cube is about six times the rapper Dre and Eazy ever were. He also wrote a lot of their stuff for NWA.

max (maxreax), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

i like how he scored a triple double playing street ball

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Predator has become my favorite Cube album lately, but this song is pretty atypical of the album.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

As far as slow-rolling funk goes I prefer Cube's "You Know How We Do It"

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

yah. gurrilas in the mist is one of my all time faves.

xpost to shakey mo

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Eazy was an underrated rapper actually, my favorite verse of his lately is on classic "Foe the Love of $" by Bone Thugs.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

("You Know How We Do It" remix is better too!)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Eazy's delivery is great - classic voice and cadence - but c'mon all his best lines are written by someone else (same with Dre)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

and?

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Eazy is stupidly underrated.

But this is about "It Was a Good Day" and it's a fantastic song. max upthread is right about the bitter background: harsh reality undermines the chilled out vibe all the way through. But it's optimistic in the end, I think. Cube's at least describing the possibility of happiness, it's like the narrator of "Dead Homies" coming to terms with the shit he's surrounded by. Of course then, perhaps most important of all, you get "We Had to Tear This Motherfucker Up".

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

i like how he scored a triple double playing street ball

haha yeah i always wondered how he got that many assists! and he's not that tall either, is he, to be grabbing that many rebounds....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Since I first heard this song it has nearly been one of my favorites. I say "nearly" because I've never been able to get over "Today I didn't even have to use my AK." For whatever reason, I believed (or at least suspended disbelief) that he got a triple double, but I never believed that he ever had to use his AK.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone like "You Ain't Gonna Take My Life"? Primo lyrical detail: "Officer Kevin."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

that was the b-side to "Wicked"...? I like all the b-sides from that period - they made for a great comp.

The video for "Today Was a Good Day" has a bunch of strange/funny things about it (like how Cube still was maintaining his 24/7 scowl at that point, and the, uh, "playful" pat he gives his girl's head as he leaves after he "put her butt to sleep", among others...)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't have the single, but I have that "Bootlegs and B-Sides" thing, which is great.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

the "MegaMix" thing at the end of that is ridiculous! (in a good way)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Max 100% OTM. But obviously beyond the political reading of the song, it's just a great fucking song. Totally a desert island track for me.

It almost saved Predator for me.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

??? Predator is a great album.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

yep

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

When compared to Amerikkka's & Death Certificate it absolutely pales, IMO. I probably picked the wrong word in a fit of message board bombast.

What I ought to have said is that "Good Day" nearly elevates Predator to the level of those two albums, but it's still inferior to those two in my view.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but "muthafuck Billboard and the editor" and "predator" is the greatest rhyme in the history of rhyme.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Da Lench Mob>>>>>everything Cube did other than Amerikka's Most Wanted.

Eric Harvey (eric marathonpacks), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

i like how he scored a triple double playing street ball

haha yeah i always wondered how he got that many assists! and he's not that tall either, is he, to be grabbing that many rebounds....

a street game can go on for hours and hours though. perhaps he should've told us his per minute avg.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

Gangsta Fairytale Pt. 2 >>>>>>> lots of stuff

I like Predator the best too

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

"No barking from the dog, no smog
And momma cooked a breakfast with no hog”

forget the triple double what about having breakfast with "no hog?" wtf. not the kind of breakfast i'd expect - is this the kosher side of cube?

fred labia (Jim Swarthout), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

he was down with the Nation of Islam at the time, malt liquor commercials notwithstanding.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

"...I had the brew/She had the chronic" even more notwithstanding!

(I like Predator the most too. And 'side one' is my favourite rap (half-)LP ever.)

Myonga Von Bougie (Monty Von Byonga), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

awesome track, I like 'Ghetto Bird' and 'You Know How We Do it' off Lethal Injection more though..

Has anyone heard the new Cube?

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite riff on this: http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1471

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

I really like Easy, a lot of his verses amuse me greatly.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Great song. I just heard "People Don't Believe" with Scarface - that ones great too

I like the Bizarre / Erick Sermon remake "Bad Day". Funny shit

Orange Pimp (Orange Pimp), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

Ice Cube did a live thing on 106 & Park yesterday, some old stuff but the new (I think?) tune was pretty hot!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

I really like Easy, a lot of his verses amuse me greatly.

If yr talking about shit like "Gimme That Nut" or "College Girls are Easy," I have to be honest, the whole him-dying-of-AIDS thing really put a damper on any enjoyment I could have gotten out of those.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

I heard a clip of Why We Thugs or We Be Thuggin or whatever and was underwhelmed - I haven't been into any of Cube's music since Westside Connection (which is weird cuz the first WC and the Maaad Circle album is great!)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

I don't get the connection?

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

WC is (was?) one third of Westside Connection.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I know, that is a great album, I'm just confused by how its weird that not liking cube's music since westside connection would some relate to liking the first WC and the Maad Circle album, but never you mind me.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

well y'know when Westside Connection first came out I was all excited because I thought the combined skills of Cube and WC would produce great results based on their past productions, shared experience with Sir Jinx, etc., but that turned out not to be the case...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Oh the way you said 'since westside connection' made me think you meant that you liked their first album. I understand now.

I do kind of like when they talk shit about cypress hill.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

This is a good song to sing with friends while walking around the suburbs after midnight.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I remember there being some Cube/Cypress Hill beef centering around the Predator - something about B-Real saying Cube was a pussy who didn't even smoke weed until he started hanging out with Muggs to do songs for the album...?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

It's a feel good song, and one of the best of its kind I think. Even better than Don't Worry, Be Happy!

It's not really secretly, that is the point of the song.

subroc back to haunt, Sunday, 4 January 2009 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

i mean not only the lyrics pointing constantly to no jackers, no people trying to kill you, no police harassment, no need of an ak, etc. but also Cube saying "shiiiit" under his breath throughout, before finally "yo stop that shit Pooh, the fuck'm I thinking about" undermining both the smooth music and the concept of a good day.

Plus I think the video ended with police choppers and cops all round his house, same point.

The radio edit of this song has always bothered me. For some reason using his jimmy to put her butt to sleep is far grosser than the actual lyrics.
