Post-"diana" Diana Ross – Search & Destroy

This should be fun.

After hearing "Muscles" at CVS yesterday, I wondered how much of her post-1980 output is worth a second listen.

From what I can remember (this stuff doesn't get played much), search: "Swept Away," "Missing You," "Chain Reaction," the Aerobics Trilogy.

Destroy: "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" "Endless Love," and the Julio duet.

iirc 'The Force Behind The Power' sounds quite Mantronix-y production wise

First of all, as an easy-listening fanatic, I LUUUUUUURVE Diana and Julio's "All of You." What's that about fine schlock? Aged like fine wine...

But really, Alf, you've got it basically right. I can only assume you're giving the so-over-the-top-it's-nearly-back-under-it "Muscles" a Search designation, as well.

I just reheard "Swept Away." It's much better than just a "search" item -- maybe her best '80s single.

"Touch By Touch," also from Swept Away, is quite good too. I love the keyboard percussion.

Also, I just discovered that the bulk of her album 'Ross' from 1983 was produced by Gary Katz (Steely Dan) and features Michael McDonald, Jeff Porcaro, Greg Phillinganes. It's not bad!

"Swept Away" should be a lot better than its pedigree suggests. It just sits there. I know Frank Kogan adores this.

swept away & ross are both good & also the swept away sleeve kicks ass

"Telephone" is a good Bernard Edwards tune.

Is "Eaten Alive" (written by MJ) good? I want to hear that album next.

This is so under-rated.

I had never heard « eaten alive ». she’s barely on it (or you mainly hear MJ anyway) ! And it’s not very good for a MJ 85 track…

there's some good stuff on The Force Behind The Power (apparently her biggest selling solo album in the UK?), I particularly like Heavy Weather (written by Michael Sembello) and the title track (written and produced by Stevie Wonder)

Is Heavy Weather a 'quiet storm' song? I'd always thought of it that way, and half-listening to the lyrics I'd assumed they were about an affaire du cœur, but looking them up they seem to be about the environment and climate change, literally about the weather? and my understanding of 'quiet storm' was that part of the definition was that it focusses on personal/domestic/intimate stuff? It sounds like what I think of as quiet storm, though.

nails the romance but is a little too jaunty imho

Relieved to see no one's defending "It's My Turn," her schmaltzy theme to the forgettable Jill Clayburgh/Michael Douglas romcom that I hear on the Sirius XM 80s station from time to time.

I like "Swept Away" much better than when I started this thread.
