So I'm doing a cd for a friend for his 40th birthday and i'm looking at 1966. I've looked over the wiki page and it's a bit mainstream. What would have been hip and groovy in 1966?

1966 was one of those rare years when nearly everything hip and groovy WAS fairly mainstream.
Maybe the best year ever for rock?

1966 (cdr-700 go!)--Matos W.K. version and '66 Tears: CDR700 Go! presentation brought to you by Sarah Pedal should give you a nice start

Eleanor Rigby is the de facto answer.

I think The Chiffons' Sweet Talking Guy is the overlooked gem of this year.

What would have been hip and groovy in 1966?

Roughly the same stuff that was mainstream: "Pet Sounds", "Revolver" and "Blonde On Blonde".

Man, just look at that material. I feel kinda privileged to have gotten my first guitar in 66.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 17 June 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, '66 was a pretty magical year, arts-wise - a time when ANYTHING seemed possible. Not just in music, but also in film and literature. Antonioni's "Blow-up", Pynchon's "The Crying Of Lot 49", and "Tomorrow Never Knows" all blurring and fusing with one another...I don't think I've ever used the word "zeitgeist", so I'm glad to finally get my chance.

Meh, still not a patch on '79.
