what is this weird kraftwerk lp i have?

a friend of mine lent me his record player along with a handful of vinyl. one of the lps is a kraftwerk double-album with a black cover and a blue "pulse" on the front cover. It sounds like very early Kraftwerk and I'm assuming it's their first record in some form or another but said album has a red traffic cone on the front.

anyone tell me what this is? i don't have it to hand right now so that's all i can tell you.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

its a compilation of early tracks in various forms. i'm pretty sure. i've seen this at Amoeba (in San Francisco, California, USA). i believe it is a compilation of early releases, or it is a live album that is essentially the same thing.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Their first two German LPs were issued as a double vinyl.

If it's gatefold, it's original. If not, it's a bootleg repressing of recent vintage.

If it's original, if the labels have the swirl, its worth £100 or thereabouts. If it has spaceships, it's about £30 worth. Both if in great condition.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

it's not bad condition. it is a gatefold lp. i think there are black and white pictures of the band in their "hippie" phase noodling about with equipment on the inside cover. i will investigate further tonight.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, that's an original one alright.

Track one, "Ruckzeug" sounds like Jethro Tull playing Desmond Dekkar's "Israelites"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ruckzuck is my fave early Kraftwerk track. I have kraftwerk 1 and 2 on vinyl.
Would like to get Ralf & Florian with the poster but that sells for stupid money.
I also have a Ruckzuck colour vinyl bootleg. With live versions of early material. I think the Neu! members actualy appear on it.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

yep, the UK version of kraftwerk 1 & 2 on vertigo. bloody awesome.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Vertigo 6641 077. Found this a few years ago, Ruckzuck is so great.

willem -- (willem), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

that looks like the one. is it worth anything?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 15 June 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

The live-version (with Dinger and Rother, yes) the Brigadier is talking about can be found on this. Though if I remember correctly, I think only "Rückstoss Gondolero" features the future Neu! founders...

Here its here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KRAFTWERK-Ruckzuck-LIMITED-RARE-RED-VINYL_W0QQitemZ4893485449QQcategoryZ16138QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 15 June 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

I got a copy of this.. with the spaceship labels..

The previous owner marked the inner sleeves with his own scores out of 10 for each track..

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

i have this too. good score, dl.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

i have this too!

Would like to get Ralf & Florian with the poster but that sells for stupid money.

worth noting that there was a limited repress of this complete with poster around 5 years ago, and so shouldnt be that expensive - at least it better not be cos i managed to scratch my copy by accident :(

zappi (joni), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Dog latin is it just a loan or do you have the lp for keeps?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

dah, i will have to give it back at some point. he's also got loads of original aphex twin and dub vinyl that i'm going to have trouble returning. along with his stereo, which happens to be the only way i listen to music these days :-(

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Poster? I thought it was a magazine or comic or some such.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

well, it folds out like a big poster & is only printed one side, but has cartoons, pictures representing each track, doodles, photos etc

zappi (joni), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Got this as well a few years ago... same exact version, great condition, etc. with the D&D logo, no swirls.

It seems to be the easiest way to get the original first two albums at all, and handy that it does it in one purchase.

Now if Kraftwerk could just stop being stupid and just re-release the first three albums legitimately. If even Dinger and Rother could make amends...

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Thursday, 15 June 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Supposedly, "Ralf and Florian" is coming...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

>The live-version (with Dinger and Rother, yes) the Brigadier is talking about can be found on this. Though if I remember correctly, I think only "Rückstoss Gondolero" features the future Neu! founders...

nope, they're on the whole thing

evidently there's another 71 kraftneu tape making the rounds, a friend just picked up a copy from Kim's and is mailing me a clone, I'm counting the days

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 15 June 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

kraftwerk is totally awesome. i have like, their early Organization demos with semen on them.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

nope, they're on the whole thing

... and Ralf Hutter isn't!

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, has dog's labels got the swirly, or the spaceship?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

didn't get a chance to look. sorry guys!

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Likely his labels are spaceships - the swirls are decidedly "Barry Winton territory" only - I bought the double when it was new, and it had spaceships. The poster is in the German "Ralf & Florian". The double album is the first two albums, repackaged for the UK market. I worked at a record distributor for ages, and we used to keep Kraftwerk release schedules up on the wall, as signs that "not everything printed was true" - new album at the time of the original "Tour de France" - not a chance? About 3 sets of EMI release schedules for that new album about 1990? No way. 2005 - the first three albums are coming as CD's - it June '06 and still no sign. Kraftwerk is dead, long live Kraftwerk.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Saturday, 17 June 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

ok got the boot in the mail. it's a CD called 'Kraftwerk - K4'. though it says 'Radio Bremen', this is the Köln gig again, the same bootleg that's been circulating for years, most recently on LP as 'Ruckzuck', linked above

except unlike the previous issues which sound like 4th dubs of something recorded off the radio onto a bad cassette -- this seems like it's the original board recording. studio fidelity, mastered at the correct speed, and with about 25 minutes of extra material -- two extra songs, and no fades -- 69 minutes.

I nearly started a new thread on this, it's the Kraftneu album -- Rother in full on Sabbath mode, the first album stripped to relentless one chord guitar jams, always accellerating. I've posted this before and someone responded that it only sounded like Sabbath because of the tape speed & distortion, but the first track starts with a near direct reference to 'Iron Man', you can see why Hutter had left the group for these gigs, this is heavy heavy metal

for the longest i thought i knew this actor personally somehow:

turns out he had been sitting in my record collection all along:

So, has Dog Latin looked?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

He is probably busy with a custody battle for all this stuff with his friend.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

doh, sorry, now. although i noticed his speakers were going all fuzzy the other day - they weren't doing it till he got back home!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

.. still don't know. Swirly or spaceships...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 26 June 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

I just realized, even the cover of Kraftwerk K4 is a reference to Black Sabbath Vol 4

this is the reissue of the year for me I think, too bad it'll always only be a bootleg

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 6 July 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

does that ralf & florian "germanofon" boot that came out, uh, maybe 7 years ago have any value?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 7 July 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

$15-20? i still see the germanofon boots around from time to time.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 7 July 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

Jon, where did you get that K4 release? I found it on slsk but would definitely like to get my hands on a 'real' copy.

btw, you can listen to "K4" on this radioshow's stream, bottom of the page.

willem -- (willem), Friday, 7 July 2006 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was mailed a clone by a friend, who bought it at Mondo Kim's. Aquarius had copies for a few days, though I think they're gone now.

The 'packaging' is a simple one sided glossy computer printout in a jewelcase. The copy I saw had the logo printed on the CDR itself, my friend's copy was just a stone cold Memorex, but it definitely sounds better than the mp3s.

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 7 July 2006 06:04 (nineteen years ago)

The Koln concert can also be found in scintillating lossless fidelity on dime-a-dozen.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Friday, 7 July 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jon, the mp3s I found sound amazing! They're at 320kbps and sound a hell of lot better than the Beat Club recordings. What the fuck was Rother on?!?

willem -- (willem), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

SWIRLY OR SPACESHIPS godammit!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm only posting here to make Mark think he got an answer..

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

BASTARD!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Did I raise your hopes here too?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

nope. Knew it was you.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Space shuttles... boo hiss!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

Incidentally the stereo that I am also borrowing from the same guy was victim to having one of it's speakers fall from a second-floor window over the weekend. woops!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ah well.

Ruckzeug with three false endings though. Or was it two?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I had a dream last night that there was a band called Ralf Hutter's New Yankee Workshop of Doom Metal.

jaymc, Saturday, 28 June 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

someone needs to make that dream come true. ralf, probably.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 28 June 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

That Kraftneu bootleg is pretty damn close

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 28 June 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

except Ralf isn't on it

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 28 June 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

I wanna have dreams like yours, jaymc.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 28 June 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

Who knows anything about this promo-only "Trans Metal Express" 12"? Apparently it's a completely different song!!

http://www.discogs.com/Kraftwerk-Trans-Metal-Express/release/1130716

the aztec mystic pizza (Stevie D), Monday, 19 July 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

From google:

Trans Metal Express (Edit) (5.42)/Franz Schubert (4.25) Capitol SPRO-8651/8652 1977
[Promo issue. A-side features version with Metal on Metal faded into TEE.]

Mark G, Monday, 19 July 2010 07:06 (fifteen years ago)

The one listed for sale on Discogs is priced at almost $200. That makes me want to hear it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 07:12 (fifteen years ago)

could it just be a shorter edit of TEE / metal on metal?

elan, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
