Defend the Indefensible: David Foster's "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire"

It's a treacly smear of pap. But who can hear it without experiencing a bittersweet rush of post-adolescent Brat Pack angst?

Plus, the video is pure class. No rehashed movie clips; instead, a scruffy roofbound saxophonist and the love triangle between a man, a woman, and his sheet music...

Ah, my 8th grade graduation theme....

Ahhh, good one, Edward III! The melody is sweet, verging on saccarine, which gets me most of the time.

To derail this thread right with the second reply: Please name other songs that have a similar overproduced sound and sweet melodies. Bonus points for DX7 Rhodes Piano use. No yacht rock jokes please. The following come to mind:

1. Christopher Cross: Arthur's Theme
2. Peter Cetera: Glory of Love
3. Chicago: Hard to say I'm sorry

Chicago's entire '80s output, especially "Will You Still Love Me."

But back on point, I do miss the days when you'd encounter something like LTFSEF on a Top 40 Hits station. Those were the days, etc.

can you imagine a song with a title like this being a hit today? "Love Theme from Herbie: The Lovebug"? "Love Theme from Napoleon Dynamite"?
