Lucio Battisti

I read that Water just reissued Battisti's "Amore non amore".
If you are vaguely interested in European pop or if you like Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso or Gilberto Gil, try it. Maybe this isn't his best album, still there are really good songs on it - from smoking latin funky grooves to weird psychedelic instrumental interludes, its a good indication of some of his musical references. Battisti probably has been the most adventorous and inventive Italian pop composer ever, its a pity few people know him (but Blonde Redhead ripped him off more than once...).

That sounds fantastic.

Water is quickly turning into one of the coolest reissue labels in recent memory.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Weird, just discovered him this week. Still digesting.

I think Area, Eugenio Finardi, and Alberto Camerini are my favorite Italian artists of the '70s though.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

The ones to get are "Il Nostro Caro Angelo" and "La Batteria Il Contrabasso etc". In the 70's, I believe it was Richard Williams in the Melody Maker that referred to Battisti as "a very hip Cat Stevens" - but the fans know better.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Saturday, 17 June 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

My favourite is "Anima latina": all deep space-funk, soaring synths and bizarre chanting. A great album.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Sunday, 18 June 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

i hear it's his most Nascimento-like and am def. on the look-out for it. Amore Non Amore is good, all the styles deftly undertaken, but the Alan Sorrenti i picked up recently holds my attention a bit longer.

wow. seriously wow. i've been hearing some disco tracks on the beardo blogs and decided to download one of his albums and grabbed Anima Latina. it's soooooo amazing. totally sounds like Nascimento and Franco Battiato. what next?

jaxon, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

I have the Water reissue of Umanamente uomo: il sogno and really love it. Posted 'Sognando E Risognando' to Leonardo. The tunes are great, but the feedback drone final track really nails it in for me.

I also have a greatest hits comp, and it's growing on me, but I get the feeling Water reissued the two with edgier production (though it's not as out as Battiato or Sorrenti -- it's just really fantastic European pop). You definitely have me interested in Anima Latina now though.

Milton Parker, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

alright, thanks for the clue on Sorrenti. the italian tim buckley they say. must investigate

jaxon, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

it has a peter gabriel vibe to me..some kind of world fusion vibe. haven't listened in a while. thanks for reminding me to listen again. i can;t remember the name of the one i have.

isn;t he the il veliero (sp?) guy too?

speculator, Friday, 11 May 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

El Velero. yeah. epic beardo disco. dunno if it's on any particular album, but looks to be the b-side of a 7". that's the song that made me search him out in the first place. but the stuff i've heard since sounds nothing like it.

I usually grab the one described as someone's most eccentric first, and Anima Latina isn't that, but it sure is amazing. It hasn't been reissued by Water but it's in print and easily found on Amazon.

good article in this week's bay guardian: http://www.sfbg.com/entry.php?entry_id=3943&catid=107&volume_id=254&issue_id=303&volume_num=41&issue_num=39

Just search for his "Le tre verità" single (I think it was released in 1970): angular riffs, edgy production and definitely the blueprint for Blonde Redhead.

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

That's some high praise!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

so far I have Anima Latina, Umanamente uomo and the red-bordered Greatest Hits. of those, Umanamente uomo is the one to get if you're into well made but eccentric pop like Franco Battiato circa Fetus (though this is a lot more mainstream than that). I can tell why Water chose to reissue the odd ones.

Anima Latina is the one to start with if you're into Os Mutantes / Nascimento / Veloso. I like Veloso's Aruca Azul but I think I'm completely in love with Anima Latina, it's got unbelievable symphonic flow, each track doesn't end as much as just momentarily pauses for a beat, and then the next detour just kicks right in. and the production is incredible, full chamber orchestra + latin dance. and his vocals really grow on you, you can see why people just fall for him as a personality.

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly (or maybe obviously) Anima Latina was completely misunderstood in Italy: way too eccentric and personal to be a commercial success, it was harshly criticized for his production (vocals were considered too low and buried in the mix, and this in Italy is almost a mortal sin).
And did I ever tell you about the urban legend of Lucio Battisti being a "fascist"?

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

"That's some high praise!"

Absolutely: that song is incredible, and totally ahead of its time. It's really that good.

anyone know anything about Adriano Celentano? i think it was one of the guys in the band Studio saying he dug battisti and celentano, so it put me on the search. i've only heard bits here and there. seems he started out as an elvis inspired rocker and is still putting out music. i'm not sure if he ever got too avant, but i definitely want to hear his 70s stuff. i accidentally downloaded Joan Lui which was mislabeled as from 75, but it's actually from 85. kinda reminds me of battisti's stuff from around the same period. slightly electro pop w/great italian vocals.

this is one of the best things i've heard from him so far (excellent video to boot)

Marco, Anima Latina stayed at #1 on the charts in Italy for 13 weeks. Is that not a commercial success?

Anyway, I think all of his albums are essential!

Patrick South, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

Sebastien Tellier has been praising this guy like hell for the past couple of years.

I've been writing about "Io vorrei, non vorrei, ma se vuoi" on the Mick Ronson thread, since that's where I first encountered this song, but I should take it here instead. I'm starting with its mother album, Il mio canto libero. This is really great.

There's a lot of stuff to be discovered!

"Marco, Anima Latina stayed at #1 on the charts in Italy for 13 weeks. Is that not a commercial success?"

It sold "only" 250.000 copies, not enough to be considered a real Battisti success!

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

Odd that no one's mentioned his big single "Ancora Tu". It's the kind of thing you can just put on repeat. First encountered it on a Sebastien Tellier mix.

Oh god Anima Latina is so so amazing, should have been in the Alt 70s poll.

What it reaaaally reminds me of is The Soft Bulletin.

I'm kind of disappointed that ILX doesn't have 300 posts on this guy! I found out about him a while ago through an online friend from Italy, though he was a lot more into his 90's work, which is a really odd kind of technopop, nothing like Anima Latina or his early singles (which are ace). Still this is interesting since I don't think I've ever heard anyone praise those albums.
