Classic or Dud: The Pillows?

i find it a little odd that there's no thread yet (that i can find) devoted to these likeable japanese chaps, since it seems like they're something of an institution overseas. i first heard them via the FLCL soundtrack in 2001 or 2002, and even though i was absolutely obsessed way back when, i haven't listened to that stuff in many moons. i had always assumed that the pillows were one of those 'gateway bands' that one looks back fondly upon as being seminal in the development of their taste in music, but doesn't pull out very often. yet i dug up my burnt copy of the FLCL ost a few days ago and listening to them again i was pleasantly surprised to find that my expanded knowledge of music has only increased my appreciation for them. in determining points of reference i find myself at a loss, but as the saying goes, i know what i like. and i like the pillows.

more importantly, does anybody else?

p.s. s/d, pox/v/o, etc.

i say "institution" though i can't speak to their popularity in japan. what i meant was that they've been around since the dawn of time (or at least the mid-80s, as near as i can figure) which would ideally mean that they are subject to the 'stay together for 15 years = get 15 minutes of fame' cult-band equation.

And FLCL is short for...

Field Lab/City Lab. It's a whaling term.

I kinda like Happy Bivuoac(sp?) btw, that's as far as I've gotten

sorry, ned. it's short for 'fooly-cooly' which is the phonetic translation of 'furi-kuri,' the meaning of which is debated, or else nonexistent. it was a six-episode tv show that was basically a pastiche of every animé cliché ever. it has very little plot to speak of and no character development, but within the six episodes there are enough giant robots, space pirates, vespas, guitars, explosions, aliens, and references to other animé (also south park?!) for five or six seasons' worth of 'serious television.' i thought it was the total shit when i was thirteen; now it gives me seizures.

FLCL is the most irrepressibly joyous thing I've ever seen.

The Pillows: well, when they're on, they're on...

Two weird "facts" I vaguely remember.
1) I could've sworn Furi-Kuri is a degenerative brain disorder that can only be contracted through cannibalism.
2) To accurately translate it phonetically into four letters of english, it would've been F.R.K.R.; Nope...Can't put that title on Cartoon Network.

Also...
As for the Pillows, I've only heard two songs of theirs and both were great. The FLCL Theme ("Ride on Shooting Star") is classic and I've gotten people into JPop just by playing it.

The fatal disease from eating human brains (and it's a prion disorder, just like Mad Cow) is "Kuru."
