"My Baby Loves Lovin'" vs. "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes"

Which is the greatest? "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" has two refrains, both fantastic. Still, there's this wistfulness to the melody in the way the verses extend on "My Baby Loves Lovin'" (the "She's the only one/Make me feel so good/I believe my love/So I knock on wood" etc. part) that makes this my choice.

That extended rhyme "When she looks at me as if to say" gets me every time. But I have to hand it to "Rosemary": "There's somethin' about her hand holdin' mine/ It's a feeling that fine ..." Plus the repeating guitar riff after every chorus.

I assume you know that despite the different band names (White Plains vs. Edison Lighthouse), they're sung by the same guy (Tony Burrows). Did he have other bands/hits?

My Baby Loves Lovin!

Holy crap! He sang "United We Stand," "Gimme Dat Ding" and (gasp) "Beach Baby" too!

I stand behind "Rosemary," but the Tony Burrows POO would have to be "Beach Baby."

There's a whole CD I've got of Tony Burrows' various vocals. Takes in Edison Lighthouse, WHite Plains, First Class, The Flowwerpot Men, Brotherhood of Man, Pipkins and others. He was also in the Ivy League back in the 60's. In the booklet it explains how his career stalled after appearing three times in one night on Top of the Pops - each time with a different band!

Anyway, I take "Rosemary" over "My Baby Loves Lovin". I just like the way the short chorus builds so powerfully, especially at the end.

I'd also like to recommend "It's Up To You Petula", an Edison Lighthouse single from a couple of years later without Burrows sadly, but great all the same. I think it was a minor hit.

I did three of the titles on one particular night on the show (with the Edison Lighthouse, White Plains and the Brotherhood of Man.) Imagine changing clothes on the side of the sets to appear with different bands! After that, the producer came and spoke to me, "I ought to tell you something, Tony. I had the word from above you're not to be used again." I asked what he was talking about. He said one particular wag from upstairs says this doesn't look right. It looks as if there's something wrong with the situation where you appear with all these different bands. Well, you asked us to do these shows. If you got on the chart, you go out and plug it, do the show. They're all selling and you asked us to do the show and that's what we've done. But he said, "well I just thought I ought to tell you." To be quite honest, I got banned from BBC Radio for two years.

Tony Burrows is not fit to shine the shoes of the likes of Ron Dante.

(I made a much better Ron Dante joke on the Ashlee lip-synching controversy thread.)

When I was younger I just assumed all these records were American.
