this genuinely is the worst idea for a compilation album ever, isn't it?

yes! it's DIY SONGS! an album specially designed to be played while you grout the bathroom or put up that tricky shelf!

this is currently being advertised on UK TV as the ideal father's day present (despite the fact it's father's day as of, umm, one hour and five minutes ago).

i mean, really. look at it. have you ever seen a more feeble and unlikely assemblage of music? "sweet home alabama" on the same CD as "JCB song"? "ring of fire" and "right said fred"? that gushing noise you can hear is the little baby jesus weeping TEARS OF FUCKING BLOOD.

is this what music has become? a soundtrack to hammering and the occasional cursed rawlplug?

i know i probably shouldn't take it so seriously, but really. this hurts my soul.

This has the requisite Steve Miler Band of all fathers day comps, but misses Handy Andy doing If I Was A Carpenter! Fakers.

"is this what music has become? a soundtrack to hammering and the occasional cursed rawlplug?"

Poetry, sheer poetry.

I bought this, oddly enough it's got a lot of Muslimgauze on it

Jamie Olivers "music to cook to" is the worst ever compilation album.

This is just opportunistic fathers day guff.

I have a lovely compilation of sixties hits in my car, perfect for driving to. I bought it at a car boot sale for 50p and hid the album cover since it is ostensibly sold as "music for people who watch Heartbeat", featuring as it does a picture of Nick Berry on the front. This is pretty much the same. A reasonable-ish collection of songs I don't hate (with about three exceptions), several I really like, most I quite like, which would be a reasonable compromise to put on in a house where no-one could agree on music.

I wouldn't buy it, like, but although the sales pitch stinks to high heaven (it's DAD music!), the actual contents aren't horrible.

"Golden Brown" is a good song, but they coulda picked something a little more rock and roll to play for manual labor.

"16.Don't You (Forget About Me) - with Simply Minds"

Also see: Worlds Best Dad

nancyboy (nancyboy), Sunday, 18 June 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

that is is pretty great but caters to a quite specific dad i would have thought. one that wants motorhead, patty smith & cheap trick on the same CD.

Are you not allowed kids unless you like Mr Blue Sky? Is that the quiniessential Dad song? (see also last night's Dr Who for confirmation that it is slowly taking over the world)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 June 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

1/2 the playlist of yr local classic rock station

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 18 June 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

it's not necessarily the songs themselves: among the dross there is admittedly some great stuff on there (including "mr blue sky", yo). it's just the half-assed conceit of it.

"we've done driving ... we've done best dad ... we've done football ... what else do blokes do ... ah! got it! quick, what can we license really fucking quickly? ah, shit, cover art ... tell you what, you still got that B&Q catalogue knocking about? excellent. pass the photoshop manual."

what next? "two pints of mild and a scotch that lasts four hours: TEDIOUS PUB NIGHT ANTHEMS?" "the wife and kids are out and if you stand behind the curtain you can see into the woman next door's bedroom: MUSIC TO WANK TO?"

hahaha

I heard someone mention this in passing yesterday and 'naturally' assumed that a DIY Music Compilation would have tracks by Ariel Pink, Tom Vek and other trendy bedroom 4-trackers.

Now I see the truth - yeah, it's an awful concept!

Rombald (rombald), Sunday, 18 June 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

I got New Wave Heroes for Father's Day.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

Then I got drunk. No rawlplugs were cursed.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

New Wave Heroes isn't too bad, although with these type of comps you always wish they'd chosen a different track by virtually every band on it. I mean would anyone really pick Baby, I Love You as a Ramones track?

Still, it has got Is Vic There? on it.
