whenever i listen to this tune it makes me so insanely happy that, for the five and a half minutes of its duration, i wonder why i ever bother listening to anything else.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 18 June 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

why wasn't this a top 40 hit !

DJ Annie Nightingale loved this track !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 18 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

soooooooo classic. but in my world they were incapable of dudness. they were kings of the 12-inch.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 18 June 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

why wasn't this a top 40 hit !

why wasn't it number one for 16 weeks?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 18 June 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

baby, i love you so 12-inch -vs- breakdown/tarantula 12-inch, such a hard choice. i might have to go with baby, i love you so though. so huge and deep. tho i do love breakdown. see, it's hard.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 18 June 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

the 2nd best colourbox 12" ever.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 18 June 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

you've made me want to go home and listen to this. sadly, i'm at work till midnight. fuck.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 18 June 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

You know, I can't figure out if I ever even heard this and I can't figure out why at all. Seems to me I've heard every other Colourbox record there is. Must seek it out.

Fryin' Berry, Buck Cherry (Bimble...), Sunday, 18 June 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

super-classic, of course. even more so on the b-side of the 12" where "Philip Glass" burbles along ambiently for five minutes and then the magnificent arm-pumping fanfare gradually starts working its way to the surface and then TAKES OVER THE WORLD

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 19 June 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

jed - played this as the last record tonight. shame you missed it as you'll have to wait four years before i play it again.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

This one and "Baby" came out the same day. Bought both, wore out "baby" which was a shame as the bass on that was something else and it didn't come over as well on the CD mini-album. The first 12" was bobbins though (OK, Kid jensen mentioned you on the radio, get over it)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Its non-Top 40 appearance was partly due to 4AD's blunder in putting out two Colourbox singles at once ("Baby I Love You So" being the other) in a misguided attempt at marketing, and partly due to the aggressive anti-indie label bias of the charts throughout '85/6 - even New Order and the Smiths struggled to get Top 40 hits, and so lots of great singles were deliberately excluded in favour of anodyne major label mush like Amazulu, Owen Paul and Belouis Some.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

I see the Mini LP is still on catalogue. Do you get the full 12" versions on there? If so I might invest in a copy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

I think there was a compilation with this on, and Pump Up The Volume, but I don't know if it was the 12".

I would like to hear it again. I think there is an Emerson Lake and Palmer undercurrent to it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

As far as I remember, yes they are the full 12" versions.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

YES! "Fanfare For The Common Man" a.k.a. Theme From Reporting Scotland - number two in the summer of punk from a band who never released singles! Rather punk rock in itself, no?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

stirmonster NOOOOO!!!!!!

how did it go down? lots of pogo-ing?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think there was a compilation with this on, and Pump Up The Volume

there is. it's on eMusic and i downloaded it from there a few months back as part of the free trial thing they do.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

I keep thinking The Lift Boys 'Liftvooyzzzz' is the 20 years on equivalent of this, would sound great played over the highlights.

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

I am psyching myself up for that free trial. I am going to get Popol Vuh though.

On Amazon it says it is the 7 inch, FWIW.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

my best friend and i videotaped a dance number for a home-brewed horror movie using this song, in about 1989. he was dressed as some sort of monster/serial-killer, and i was dressed up in a kid's ninja halloween costume. i remember it involved a lot of synchronized kicking and "monster attack" moves. we shot it in my front yard. what an awesome song.

chr1sb0y (chr1sb0y), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Utterly perfect. Let's fuck everything!

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
i've just listened to this now (having forgotten all about it when i got home back in june, natch). i'd forgotten how much i loved it. i MUST get hold of colourbox album(s).

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 September 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

There is a d/l opportunity here (scroll down a bit), but I don't know if it's the 12" because it is in foreign:

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

TS: "Colourbox Official World Cup Theme" vs. "The Crunch" by the RAH Band.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

i found breakdown/tarantula in a NYC stoop sale for $1!!! hee hee

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

nine months pass...

I think I paid like $2 NZ for this 12". Not showing off, that's a bummer.

President Evil, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

Why is it a bummer? It's a DA DA DA DADAH DA DA DA DE DA DHA

ohhhh, umMMMM (duH duH duH), brrrr,,,,,,,,,,,,

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

How come I can easily recall how "baby I love you so" goes but this one not at all?

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

It's a bummer cos this is a song I'd seriously consider as one of my fav ever, and the bside's killer as well, and man what's with people? TWO DOLLARS?

President Evil, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

anybody prefer the this mortal coil version of tarantula? i might. i love what they did to it. breakdown is, of course, pure genius and unbeatable.

i think i still own the vinyl that collects the 12-inchs, but the sound is so bad in comparison. baby i love you is probably in my top ten of 12 inch singles as far as sound goes. SO fucking loud and beautiful.

scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

(likewise, the double album version of their full-length sounds better than the single album version. or maybe it's just my imagination.)

scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

i won't do a poll, but i would have a hard time picking my fave song from here:

1. "Sleepwalker"
2. "Just Give 'em Whiskey"
3. "Say You"
4. "The Moon is Blue"
5. "Inside Informer"
6. "Punch"
7. "Suspicion"
8. "Manic"
9. "You Keep Me Hangin On"
10. "Arena"

1. "Edit The Dragon"
2. "Hipnition"
3. "We Walk Around The Streets"
4. "Arena II"
5. "Manic II"
6. "Fast Dump"
7. "Sex Gun"

scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

You know, I pulled out their album recently and it hasn't aged particularly well, really. Still some good bits but not the end-to-end thriller it once was, alas.

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. i bought a best-of and listen to it a lot. timeless wonder.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 28 June 2007 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

They certainly popularised the whole sampling thing in the indie scene at the time, I seem to recall it wasnt such a big thing anywhere but hiphop back then, and of course the whole MARRS sample-lawsuit hoohaa.

"Just Give 'em Whiskey" was great.

Trayce, Thursday, 28 June 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Is it my imagination or did they record that song at a higher volume than anything else recorded at the time? Or is it just a naturally 'big' sound?

Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

I remember having to turn my stereo down whenever I put it on because it was simply too loud.

Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

I usually turn it up whenever I put it on because it is simply too great

President Evil, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

What tune did the BBC actually pick for their 1986 World Cup coverage theme?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

That horrible New Order thing?

Trayce, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, was that the same year? I'm daft.

Trayce, Thursday, 28 June 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

I usually turn it up whenever I put it on because it is simply too great

OK, Mr President, I was asking for that, but really it is a very loud record.

I remember hoping and praying the BBC would choose Colourbox for their 86 WC coverage, but alas it was not to be (not that I remember what they eventually chose.)

Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

On Googling, apparently it was something called "Aztec Lightning" by somebodies called "Heads."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

As far as I remember, it's ALWebber.

Mark G, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

Good old meritocratic BBC.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

That horrible New Order thing?

They certainly popularised the whole sampling thing in the indie scene at the time, I seem to recall it wasnt such a big thing anywhere but hiphop back then, and of course the whole MARRS sample-lawsuit hoohaa.

Big Audio Dynamite were doing this around the same time too altho they're probably not as Indie.

blueski, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, the horrible New Order thing was 4 years later.

jed_, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

also, it wasn't horrible.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

art of noise were indie, weren't they? but, yeah, i always thought that colourbox were pretty unique. they way they mixed and matched things.

scott seward, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

and then after pump up the volume *poof* they just disappeared? what the hell happened to them?

scott seward, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

They bought themselves out of the 4AD contract, presumably signed with a major and *then* vanished.

Mark G, Thursday, 28 June 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Come on "World in Motion" was terrible. EN GER LAND.

Trayce, Thursday, 28 June 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

pretty good lyrics for a New Order song.

blueski, Thursday, 28 June 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

You try stretching "England" out to get three syllables!

musically, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry Daniel, it IS loud. I actually usually turn it down at first but end up with it right back up again.

President Evil, Friday, 29 June 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

I can't understand why I never posted to this thread. *shakes head*

I find the Colourbox World Cup Theme hard to remember and not very remarkable, even though I did play it again after this thread got started. I almost think Scott is right that the This Mortal Coil version of "Tarantula" is just a little bit better than the original. Also I wish to god I still had my "Baby I Love You So" 12"! :(

I also agree with Mr. Odd that the last time I tried to play the entirety of the double LP it just didn't seem half as exciting as it did when it came out. I still love "Arena" a lot, though.

And I won't stand for any hatred of New Order's World In Motion. Not for a minute.

Bimble, Saturday, 30 June 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

ah, I hadn't heard that before - that's lovely. I'm finding it impossible to remember when I'm not actually playing it though.

Mexico 86 was great all round, actually. I loved the official 'Aztec Lightning' theme, I even bought it (I was nine). In truth the recorded version was a bit house-band-y, but it made for a really dramatic credit sequence as I recall, plus I associated it with that cool logo with the horizontal lines. How crushing the disappointment when we finally got a world cup in the daytime
