what's the average weight of a 12" record? this is important. if i get no answers i will bust out the bathroom scale and weigh myself, then pick up twenty 12"s, and divide the difference by 20. i guess i could have done that in the time it takes to type this but i figured you smarties would already have this figured out and maybe even have your own stories about how you did it.

apparently 140g is the standard weight of a 12"/LP. 180g is the "heavy" version.

125 records in one crate is enough to cause your back to hurt for a week when lugged up 2 flights of stairs. HTH.

I'm guessing sleeve weight is negligible, then?

Also, Is this for shipping purposes?

yeah, it needs to include sleeve weight! it is indeed for shipping porpoises. i mean dolphins.

Imperial or metric? But really, you should weigh those specific records individually, unless you're a bigtime ebayer, 'cause of the complications of gatefolds and the like, plus the weight of the packaging.

According to my digital scale Stockhausen's "Prozession" weighs 213 grams and Basement Jaxx's "Kish Kash" (2 Lps) weighs 361 grams.

i have hundreds of records! i just want a ballpark idea. tomorrow i will do the experiment and share the results with you all. i'm really surprised there isn't a well-known rule of thumb for this. i googled but somehow it's a hard thing to google for.

xpost: awesome, Chinchilla! this is Science we are doing here now! is that with the sleeves or ... naked?

i had some friends drive cross country with a trailer full of boxes of records. it was soooo heavy that the trailer pushed down on the wheels and caused them to pop from the friction

If this is for shipping large amounts, i.e. hundreds, isn't it usually calculated by volume? That's certainly how pickfords charged me when I moved to singapore...

I keep it around for just such an urgent eventuality as this thread. And for measuring ingredients for cooking. And for monitoring the weight of rodents!

I remember my crates of records weighing about 60lb each (for 125 albums with plastic sleeves).
